Title: perplexing performance issues.....
Post by: humble on April 23, 2006, 03:54:35 PM
I'm having ongoing issues with tremendous spiking in my variance....

ping plot shows connect in the 85-87 range with no packet loss....

I loaded FS autostart and have whittle proccess to 21....cpu usage shows zero and system resources appear to be excellent. I bypassed my Dlin wireless router and am plugged directly into my DSL modem (do I need to trouble shoot that?)....

I'm clueless on where to look at the moment....

current ping plotter trace....

I fired up my old box (son has it) and basically have a flat line so the issue isnt in the connection. It's somewhere in this box, could it be a PS problem?

Othere thought is its a sound issue...will put in a sound card 1st....what other likely possibilities are their?

Do both computers use an onboard LAN?  If you plug the computer in and get a flaky connection, I'd suspect either the driver for the LAN or maybe a hardware problem with it.  Do you have a plug-in network card you could try on the computer with the problems?  Have you tried updating the drivers for the motherboard and components?

DO you see anything in offline mode?    With AH running , alt tab out and open taskmanager , take a look at the proccess list , in the view option, turn the update time up to high . Now look to see if any process is hitting the cpu at all . U might have already done this , or it could be network related , just tossin out an idea 38

doesnt show anything else running all accept AH....cpu utilization on AH ia 97-100%....nothing else shows over 3-5 min of viewing time accept taskmanager got a % or 2 and explorer when I had this window in background got 2% for a sec...

you can restart hold del key and check in the systems bios for temps  if you dont have a "probe " type temp monitor program .  also check your voltages too in the same way .

I ran the dianostics program the box came with (soso) and it did give me the MB ASUS amberine M. I googled it and found speedfan works with it so I downloaded it....

I'm not familiar with speedfan but it shows me 4 temps

CPU 43/44C
ambient 44C
Remote 58 (under AH goes to 72-74C)
HD0 41C
Temp1 40C

The box seems remarkably cool...air from CPU fan is very cool....no clue where the "remote" sensor is.....will try your suggestion as well

speedfan also reports voltages...

5V+ 0
Vcpu 1.12
Vcc 3.32
5V 5.12
12V 12.3
3V 3.33
Vbat 0.0

Remote 58 (under AH goes to 72-74C)

that one i dont under stand i wonder what its monitoring    is it a 64 bit cpu with a cooling bridge  ? if its a amd cpu 72c is too hot for cpu  .

the rest look good

in voltages these look ok

Vcpu 1.12
Vcc 3.32
5V 5.12
12V 12.3
3V 3.33

the bat at 0 must be  non read part i think .

im gonna step out and suggest  a monitor swap with your old gamer  disregard if on same monitor ... and start digging in the dxdiag file for clues .. post it up or email it to  Skuzzy  ...  (scratches head still)

is this a dual-core system? So far AH and dual-cores havn't played nice with each other. Just another thought thrown in.

What video settings are you using in the game, and how much system RAM does your computer have, and what video card are you using?

I'm curious as well wht that "remote" sensor is monitoring....the CPU shows at 43/44 with no real increase under load....the remote is in the 58 range at idle and goes to 70+....

58 is way to hot for a CPU at idle....could it be temp on the southbrige chipset?

Quick lets beat Humble and drag his dxdiag outta him :D

Goto start /run / dxdiag     <--- type that in  save file  when done and either email it to Skuzzy or post it here (ussually the 1st 1/3 of the file is enough )

you can edit ur pc's name out if ya want to ..

There is a passive heatsink for the ATI RS482 CS....i'm guessing thats whre the remote sensor is. The heatsink on the CPU looks to be pretty good....

totally unrelated to the topic on hand, but you don't have your moniters INF files installed (where it says "plug and play moniter" it should say "phillips 107s" or whatever model moniter yours is). i forgot where i heard about it, but having the proper moniter drives does something good.

Been doing a bit of amature diagnostics....I unloaded mt saitek software and unplugged my peddle and JS...if I load AH I get the couple of normal spikes and then stuff flattens out pretty well....now if I use the numbad to alter view I get an immediate spike that settles when I release view back to default???

the video card works great with no studders or problems and benchmarks fine??? But I repaeted this enough times to know its not a fluke....will reload JS and see if I get same thing looking around...

Same result, the spiking seems to be related to the "views"....guess I'll experiment with different drivers...any known conflicts between the onboard ATI graphics and the Nvidia cards???

reload ah .. run at defalts   set up at 512 .
 dont preload anything .

now lets see what it does .

Also you may need to drop your video screen size down and increase hz ..
 Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz)   <--- 60hz sux bigtime

I cant play unless i see 72hz or better

he's on an LCD..

Identifies my LCD as a Sceptre X9 (which is correct) in device manager...
so there isn't that "flicker" from a CRT @ 60hz

EDIT> dumb question... is your keyboard a USB? is it directly into the back of the PC or into an external USB hub? i was running my JS into a hub, and the game was unplayable, as the input was not at the same time as i moved the stick... something to do with the hub. also, is it a wireless keyboard? what happens with a normal keyboard pressing a view key?

I deleted AH using the add/delete program feature in control panel and when I reload AH it restores my settings...so it comes up with old settings and passwords etc....

Still fighting this thing:(.

I took out the 7900GT and reloaded the onboard video....ran smooth as silk online (obviously very soso performance). Replaced PS with a 500W with 28A on the 12V line and reloaded (84.21 drivers)....back to a varience line that looks like an EKG:(....used 128 tex and default to 1024 and maxed left with no difference in varience?

Obviously some type of an issue with card and system....curious if known issues with the new onboard ATI 200 and Nvidia cards??

Any thoughts on next step appreciated....ahte to have to play it with onboard VC till I build a new box out:(

Actually humble, try using one of the 82.xx series of drivers.  It appears NVidia has whacked thier memory management in the 84.xx series, among other things.

Finally got everything resolved. System is rocksolid at 1024 tex with max detail framerates locked at 60 (about 180 with v sync off) and varience is totally flatline. Was a combination of "little stuff"...

Drivers for 7900GT
"old" Nvidia driver remaints....
"old" ATI driver remaints from on board video
"old" zonealarm firewall registry "ghost"

What I have found out is as follows....
Biggest issue is actually cleanup....and this was a new system...I actually had 5 partial drivers (ATI alone) left AFTER using multiple 3rp party cleanup utilities as well as 1 Nvidia (highly recommend NFR (nasty file remover))...

Posted driver for Nvidia in hardware/software section. Best I found by far....50% increase in FR over omegas with great detail....and this is without running autostart so I have all 55 proccess running...
