Title: Video capture cards
Post by: jollyFE on April 24, 2006, 11:46:25 PM
I am looking at copying our home movies from vhs and 8mm to dvd.  I have seen that turtle beach makes both pci and usb devices to take inputs from your camera and convert them to a format which you can burn to dvd.  does anyone know which cards to stay away from.

the wifes hounding me to get this done.

thanks

You;ll need a really god program to copy vcr to a computer, I read somewhere that the vcr and computer are 2 completely different signals, and you need something to convert them to a digital signal. Wal mart had a thing that pluged into teh vcr and computer both and was supposed to do that stuff but I havent seen it in a while.

Hmmm... if you're simply planning on copying from one format to the other, there are VCR/DVD combo devices that you can use or simply use a DVD recorder with your VCR.

If you're looking to get a computer involved and edit the movies, you can use an ATI All in Wonder video card with your computer.

I believe the AIW cards come with the software you'll need.

Opinions vary, but personally I avoid the all in one cards, I've been using the Hauppauge Win-FM somefeces that has full FM radio/ tv support, svideo out / in. I picked it up at Frys for $69 about a year ago. I've even used it to make $$ making SVCDs of old vhs wedding / birthday video.

The FM radio is a neat feature I thought id never use, but do all the time. It came with a remote that can be used to control all kinds of Windows functions besides the cards usual features.

Since it is most likely windows only, does the remote have a button labeled "crash"?

thats actually a pretty neat thingy. does the FM tuner have it's own antenna? does it use alot of resources working in the background?
