Title: a 5" solution
Post by: MadBull on April 25, 2006, 09:57:21 PM
5" ( puffy ack ) manable guns at fields but with no proxy fuse. Instead use the numbers on the keyboard for distance settings.

Like 1 would be 1k  2 would be 2k and so on then use the + and - keys to adjust distances between the preset values. so that way it's not just point and shoot.

It would actually take some effort to use it thus not making it almost impossible to attack or kill. and yet still providing base defense.

Then you could make the trade off that if your manning the gun and get shot you get killed and the person that kills it gets credit for shooting you down.

     Just an Idea

I like.

I would really like the option, esp for special events when trying to do a semi realisitic torpedo run.

Currently 5" guns make torp attacks suicide if the 5" guns are enabled.
They never even get into range to drop.

Ghost while i agree it is suicide to torp run in AH... So it was in WWII. I believe whole squadrons of torpedo planes were shot down to sink one carrier.

The US 5 inch had proxy fuse so it stays..... But  88s with the option stated
above would a better addition.

Or as was discussed in a similar thread; since the 88's used a different method, just model the U.S. 90mm; it used identical proximity fuzes as the five inch.

Yea, as much as Id like to see your torpedo run happen, that's how it was in real life.  Plus the fuzing on those 5" shells were radio frequency jobbies.

It *would* be kinda cool if, like a GV loadout, you could choose the shells you wanted (radio fuse or not).

The difference is in real life yes the torp planes would get shot down.
But it wouldn't happen until they were close enough to drop their torp.

In AH you die 3- 5k out,  well outside of torp range.

A minor change like this one in fuzing would make a HUGE difference.
Yes you'd still die, but you'd have a chance to get your fish in the water.

Thats ALL I'm asking for.

Well Ghosth I think changing the view of the five inch gunners position would give you that slight bit of added reality. #1 they didn't have such an unobstructed view with zoom magnification etc. #2 they were inside the turret & had to rely on reports from observers for where to look (there was no god mode) I think the 20mm's & quad 40mm's are not as deadly as they really were & the five inchers are more deadly than they really were. But it doesn't equal out, anything low level is dead meat coming into one of these cv groups in AH & at very high alts, untouchable except for the occasional hit here & there.

In short, remove the extreme zoom & god mode, place the gunner inside the turret & I believe you'll slip more torpedo planes through.

You want to get more torps in... its simple really... put more torps in the water at the same time from diff angles. I think its unrealistic for a single WWII plane to get through and drop a torp on a cv. It should take whole squads of torp planes to sinc a cv.
Not to mention a coordinated attack with dive bombers to make it even harder for the gunners.

That's certainly part of it. We had a blast (pun intended) with the Torp setup during the Coral Sea scenario. So far as I can tell Events are really the only place for the torp planes to shine.

It's a shame I took those pages down.

Precisely right.

Sorry Ghost!  Tactics!

As if carriers are hard to sink or something.

That's what suicide ,dive bombing lancs are for.

FYI guys in the last Fri squad ops frames our squad twice destroyed enemy fleets. Second time was a perfectly coordinated split attack hitting the fleet from opposite sides at the same time.

So I know all about tatics.

The problem is that the 5" are sooo good at killing torp planes 3k out.
That as a result we have to disable ALL ships guns.

Hence why I'd like at least an "option" to open up more possibilties.

There are usually only 4 5" guns per fleet.  We can only shoot at 4 plane groups at a time that way if the angles are right for all guns (usually only 2  groups at a time)......send in more planes at the same time.

The 5" guns already move slow, have a slow rate of fire, and a randomization built in...plus the aiming effects due to lag.   A bomber group on the deck at 3k out with no icon showing looks the same size as a bomber group 6K out at 7k alt so without better radar info or graphics updates, no one will have time to type accurate guesstimates in.

IRL the gunners had accurate range and alt info available.  In the game as it is now when a bomber group is on the deck the gunner has no info other than what the game graphics capabilities provide.

Planes have enough of an advantage as things stand now.
