Title: HTC Going to E3?
Post by: RTSigma on April 27, 2006, 03:34:01 AM
I am just curious if any of you fine folks from HTC will be making the trip out to Los Angeles for the E3 convention. Why do I ask? I will be going for my second year in a row as media.

I wish.  It's way too expensive for space there for such a small company like us.  E3 is a great party though!  Only been once back in 1997 for a 'different' game.

as cold as it sounds, im glad HTC aint going to E3. if they did, it would cause lots of "undesirable" people to start playing more than they are now. we have enough dweebs as it is.

Undesirables aren't going to pay 15 bucks a month to play. Plus no matter what people are going to find AH2 some way, through searches, word of mouth, etc.

This is exactly the type of attitude that killed WB.  The community will be what the community allows itself to become.  When a new player does something inapropriate, you should give a moderatly polite reminder about ediquette.  Those who fly outside the community are doomed to get killed a whole lot more than those who fly within acceptable guidlines.

Just ask yourself, your at 15k, and below you is a friendly with a bandit saddled up firmly on his six.....if its some jerk who has shot flaming wrecks as the fall wingless into the ground, tacked bandits on your six without ever giving you warning, and/or blabbered on and on either in text or vox proving their utter dweebery.....do you dive in an help???

There are hundreds of players I will put myself in harms way to assist, there are many more that I will, if its reasonbly safe, help our....and there are those who I will just wait to be killed before diving in on the bandit...after all, I wouldnt want to risk killshooting myself:D

New players are always welcome, we've got room in the friends pile as well as the bozo bin.

funny thing is they do. i was tired when i said that though. i think it's great to have more people coming in, and perhaps it's only because of my perspective, but the game has really transformed.

lol, im still tired, and really, have no idea what im talking about, but, i think, lots of kids do watch the military channel, i mean, it's always interesting, and all little boys learn to make a machine gun sound before they can talk:lol

and mostly, it's going to be the younger guys that will play these games, and go, cool, lets go download that when they see an ad. anyway, like i said, could be my changing perspective that's appeared to show such huge changes. lol, sorry ignore me, i think im going insane lol

g'night all

Ask yourself this.  Do you want AH to go away?  If not, then I suggest you treat anyone new to the game with more respect than they might be giving you.  In return, those newbies may actually become somewhat respectable.  A new player's frustration could easily become an attitude that you don't like, just as when anyone becomes frustrated.
I realize there are also those hopeless types who do try to cause trouble, but treat them as you wish to be treated.  Giving them the same bad attitude back does this community no good, and in fact only promotes that behavior.  Merely film, screenshot or report the behavior to HTC.  If you’re just going to stir the pot, then maybe you’d be better of being silent.
The snobbery that many here on the boards seem to possess is disconcerting.  We need new players to keep this game alive.  Having an attitude of, “This is my game.  Play it the way I want you to,” is contradictory to what the game is about and to all the choices of gameplay we offer to the player.  New players are not the downfall of the game.  It’s some of the veterans’ attitudes that will do that on it’s own.

Everybody watching the coverage make sure to check out "Spore". You can google for "spore video" and find a 30min alpha version of it being demo'd. It's amazing. I think it's the next evolution of video gaming. I forsee myself losing a sizable chunk of my social life to this game.

Do you actively track the demographics of the players? Just curious. I think it'd be interesting to see a pie chart of player's age ranges. Maybe even break it down 1 more level with Age & how they compose the 3 sides in AH.

In fairness, HT and Superfly, I would say that 95% of the channel inteactions with raw newbs are positive and helpful -- in the game itself, and in the training forums.

('Course, entering the general AH forums is a bit like walking in on a moderately disciplined pack of dogs, and the O'club can be like a mildly restrained wolfpack....)

In game, when people ask "how to you up gear?" they're almost always gunna get a civil answer. I've seen less of the "go to the TA' dismissiveness that was pretty uniform a year ago, tho its still there some. Even when 2 newbs are filling the country buffer instead of range during a fight, we mostly just put up with it.

The only time I've seen rought treatment is when the newbs cop an attitude, and dont back down. Two most common situations are "this game sucks!!!' rants, and "ths country stinks, you guys wont even...." Either way, those guys get variations of "Fine, leave"

Generally tho AH treats new guys well, IMHO.

I dont care about age....some young players do a great job, especially with this video game generation. I think of RObbie14, who's developing into a pretty fair stick in a hurry. And the 10 year olds who behave like 10 year olds arent generally going to stick with Ah anyway. (The 28 year olds who behave like 10 year olds have a much longer subscription half life, unfortunately...)

My only gripe with a 10 year old is the screechiness in my headphones....my ears ring enouhg on their own, thank you very much! SIlat keeps talking about a high frequency audio filter patch, and if it were real I'd be right near the head of the line....

yeah, dont get me wrong, there are a few really young guys out there that are great fun, and just generally, funny guys, like gunit lol. that kiddo is so funny:lol

but unfortuneately the majority of young players are the annoying leet speeking brats with big egos. and it's those guys that most people think of when we think of 'undesirables'. those are the only guys i dont like to see here, because they are just, well, you know. thankfully not many stay around, and we do get lots of cool guys coming in through the commercials.

what i was saying before was totally aimed at the bad eggs that come by, which im sure some of you guys can understand:)

Honestly, you're going to have your fair share of tards, young and old. Late last night a young pilot who was new kept flying with us as we captured 78. He was very polite, asked nicely. When people were logging off for the night the kid was asking anyone if he could join up for them in a few more flights. I felt kinda bad logging because it was one of those rare times you see a young pilot get really into a game and want to become part of the community and be respectful.

As for E3, it is now 8 days away! I have scheduled meetings with CH and Saitek and I'm sure some guys want to know whats going on. I'll try and post on these boards when I'm in LA.

Hitech want me to beat up the competitors?

Lots of ten years old watch History Channel apparently. The last weeks, there has been a huge influx of 9-12 year olds in the TA. At times it was more a daycare center then a training room for flight tactics.

Every player gets treated with uttmost respect on my part (even though i dont think many of them youngsters ever plan on becoming paying customers... but who knows, they might have a big bro :)).

I stop being very helpful though when they start showing no respect whatsoever to other players and/or the guys trying to help them. I one had a guy that asked the same question over and over. I answered at least 4 times, trying to help. When he kept going i asked if he even read my answers. He said "No, i couldnt be bothered". Well, then, im VERY sorry, but if you cant be bothered reading, i certainly wont bother answering your questions. Some start complaining when you need longer then 5 secs to type an answer. A humourous comment usually cleans that up.

I agree fully with Simaril: Age is not the problem. Attitude is at times.

Join a journalist publication that is related to the gaming industry like GameInformer, GameSpot, etc. I work as the EiC for GamePlasma.com and this is my second year going to E3. Its fun, but hard work.

Last year when I went I don't think I got more than 2-3 hours of sleep a day. I'm expecting the same this year.

I ain't a reporter, but I still co-authored an update about AH on the Virtualpilots.fi (http://www.virtualpilots.fi/games/ah.html) site. Sorry, it's in Finnish. Kanttori transcribed my text and Grendel was (is) the editor... Just helping to spread the game I love. :)

edit: darn, that needs an update. I'll try to get it done this week. Still TOD and Combat theater in that text there...

Haha, yeah I know. Problem is that the work is voluntary and I usually have a full plate. Games that are sent to us have priority over games that we play "for fun". I do plan on doing an AH2 review once I have the free time in my schedule.

Notice that we don't have IL2 or Warbirds or WWIIOL up there.

Problem with reviewing certain games is that they can go through many updates and I feel that it isn't fair sometimes to base a game on its early inception. If I had reviewed AH2 before the re-done cockpits it would have been different than reviewing it now with the updated cockpits.

I don't think that a lot of ten year olds watch the History or Military channel BUT those ten year olds sure do watch their parents and relatives play AH,  then want to play themselves.

Kids LOVE games like AH when they see it played and these little kids are a lot brighter than some give them credit for. My neice years ago ( she's 18 now) used to sit on my lap and play AW when she was 8. She LOVED AW.

I have a nephew who is playing now and he's 10. He types better than I do and people don't usually realise he's just a kid unless they hear him on vox.

He's also gotton very interested in military aircraft because of AH. I asked him if he liked the new jet fighters, but he pretty much is into WWII aircraft.

If we never allowed new and young players to AH2, then it'd die.

Helping the younger ones out is like being a parent, expect to get mad but there is nothing better than watching a pilot you taught and guided start racking up kills and getting salutes.

Well, I'm doing my part.  I talked AH up to 3 guys I work with, and 1 or 2 of them actually downloaded and installed it.  Of course the one guy I work most closely with can't get his joystick working right (it appears to be spiking uncontrollably which results in immediate stick-stirring warnings) but he has enough cash to buy a new stick so maybe he'll keep trying.

Of course, I keep the karmic balance going by telling noobs that the answer to all their questions is to use the secret key combination "alt-f4", which brings up the help file interface...  It's not EXACTLY a lie...

The only thing wrong with newbie kids is they bypass the TA and go straight to the MA. "How do I start my engine?", "How do I takeoff?" and "How do I drop bombs?" are some of my favs.
Maybe you could put together a quick tutorial vid or just force 2 weekers to log an hour in the TA before gaining access to the MA.

Of course they do, every male child 10-99 glamorizes guns and killing. Just read the o-club topics.
