Finally got the ok from the old ball & chain to actually spend more than $19.00 for a Wal-Mart special headset. Anyone have any good suggestions?
Will a USB headset eat some f/r ?
I see that Turtle Beach has some 5.1 headsets...would it be worth it to get surround sound?
thanks

My favorite headset is actually quite cheap: the Koss CS-100, available from buy.com and other places for $15. It has very good sound quality and frequency response (even down low) and a great mic. They aren't the world's most-cushiony of headsets, but I wear them for many hours at a time, and they are fine for me.

I use a Sennheiser... The quality of sound is good (wish my car stereo sounding like this), but I had to take an exacto knife to the plastic on the wires because my headphone & mic jacks are on opposite sides of the PC. With a steady hand, it's a quick fix though.
They are good for cancelling out outside noise, but they do get a bit uncomfortable after awhile...
I don't remember how much they cost, think it was about $50+/-

Cheap and fantastic sound: Logitech Premium Headset w/mic. Ran me about $25 at Office Max. It's got a mic on a non-articulating boom, so you can't move it closer to your face. Which is about the sole downside to it. The sound will amaze you (bass isn't overly loud, but it does kick) and the earcups don't give you a headache! Though they are made for small ears, which feels weird the first few times you use it. Set the headband a little loose to make them comfortable. Also, disable any equilizer you've got running; the default sound coming from them is great!

I think that any USB device will be a bad idea. It eats CPU.
Not 100% sure, maybe some one can confirm this?
I use the zalman 5.1 surround head set.
The mic is a bit odd, but mic sound quality is ok.
In a GV you can hear if the bad guy is in front or behind you :) That is nice with 5.1.
In theory you can also hear this in AC, but then again the bad guy is allways on my 6 anyway.

For Christmas, I got the Medusa 5.1 Surround Sound headphones. They were around $120 for the soundcard version, but they are awesome! They are very comfortable and have a great microphone too.
The surround effect is pretty good in AH, and just awesome in things like CounterStrike. The US vendor is:

Heartily recommended...
