His post about how he got to AH dredged up all kinds of old gaming memories for me & I thought I'd ask two things:
1. What was the first game you can remember playing on a computer?
2. What are your five favorite computer games of all time?
For me:
1. I can remember way, way back playing a game that had no name (I believe we just called it "Weather" on a TRS with a tape drive. You created a weather pattern or something like it & launched it at your opponent's base. Riveting, at the time (sometime in the vague mists of the 70's)
2.Jack Nicklaus Golf - Signature Edition. Had a simple to use, but elegant (for it's time) course designer. With nothing more than a scorecard showing layout & a basic knowledge of the course, I could layout all my favorite local courses in about 2 or 3 hrs per. I don't know how much of my time my friends & I blew playing this game.
You don't know Jack. Hell, I still play this game. Incredible job they did putting it together.
DOOM. It's just gotta rank up there as one of the most addictive games ever. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Wing Commander. OK, I'm a space-fighter-geek. It had a very closed mission set, but I just loved it (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Got the urge to play it again now, but I think I'd hafta dig my ole 486 outta the basement to do it, hehe.
Aces over Europe. OK, I can't recall, but I'm pretty sure the FM's bore no relation to reality. I do recall it being the first WW2 flight sim that made me feel like computers might actually be able to simulate to WW2 flying experience tho, & that was enough.

1. First computer game I can remember playing was some kinda golf game in like 1993 or something... the first sim was some Desert Storm stuff where you would fly a F117.
2.
1. Ultima Online before Origin ruined it.
2. Rogue Spear
3. Tribes
4. AW 2
5. AH

Wow, that means when I first logged onto DOS-AW, its safe to say that Nath was still drinking out of a tippy-cup...I feel REALLY old now (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)...
First computer game I played was a sub game, and it was all text format.
-
1. Oils Well & Wolfenstein
----------------------------
1. Hidden and Dangerous
2. Wing Commander (all of them)
3. Age of Empires series
4. F-117A Stealth Nighthawk (FM is probably the worst ever in a game, but I probably spent thousands of hours playing it).
5. Aces of the Pacific
------------------
Squadron Leader, Igloo.
C/O RCAF 411 Squadron - County of York (http://www.trueorigins.net/411rcaf)
"Problems cannot be solved with the same awareness that created them" - Albert Einstein[/i]

1. There was some sort of adventure game on the TRS-80 but I can't think of the name. What I consider to be the first real computer game that wasn't ASCII based that I remember was Choplifter on an Apple my freshman year in HS. I was always disappointed my TI99/4A didn't have something like it.
My favs:
1. Wing Commander. My college GPA reflects this.
2. The old AD&D titles ("Gold Box"?).
3. The first two of the X-Com series.
4. Transport Tycoon.
-
Can't remember the name of it, it was similar to space invaders. And we had to load it up via cassette player (often 3-4 times to get a good load) plugging audio out into the TRS-80. [edit - heh, wonder if Mickey's talking about the same]
Fav's
1 - Aces High (Current time waster)
2 - Early Ultima series, thru like 4 I think (before they started wasting resources on eye candy)
3 - MS Fight Simulator for IBM PC, early 80s some time. Used to leave it flying cross country while I mowed the lawn (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
4 - Half-Life, freshest 3d shooter since DOOM.
5 - Rouge Spear. Above without superweapons (keep your mods, I don't want em)

Speedball & Supercars, Amiga 500
Civilization & Pirates, Amiga 500
Lotus Turbo Challenge, Amiga 500

Won't touch the PC, would be too long a post, other than saying that Wolfenstein 3D blew me away and made me save up for a PC. 'puter games have been an interest of mine since I worked out I didn't have to spend time with people face to face with 'um (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

old?
yep, very old. considering taking up griz on his sale of a C64. hehe
Fatty, before I knew about OL fighter sims, me & a friend used to hook up direct & chase each other around chicago in cessna's on MSFS. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Thank God we've got guns now, we used to get into big fights about whether we "had a shot", hehe

eh? In 1993 I would be 10.
-
StSanta - almost all the C64 games you mention were owned by one of my friends, and because my parents couldn't afford to buy me a computer, I'd go round to his house and watch! I thought 'Ace of Aces' was v. cool.
I eventually got a computer of my own - Amstrad CPC and remember playing 'Harrier Attack' on Christmas day aged about 8 y/o.
Favourite Games of all time:
1)Aces High
2)Tie Fighter
3)Monkey Island 1 and 2 (not 3 - very dissapointed)
4)Sam and Max
5)Soldier of Fortune
-
First game I played on a computer...
It was ASCII "graphics" hangman on a Zenith computer that pre-dated the PC. Although I may have mucked with this old climbing game on a Vic20 first... dunno.
Best games:
1. Aces High (and it's father WB)
2. Need For Speed (the series)
3. Doom
4. Railway Tycoon
5. Leisure Suit Larry
I never played flight sims until I found WB. It changed my entire point of view about multiplayer, it was the first game I ever played online like that and it blew my mind. AH still does. Sometimes I remember just how mindblowing it was when I first loaded up WB to think that all of those other planes are REAL PEOPLE who are sitting at their computers all over the world. How freakin' cool is that?! It's good to sit back and think about how cool the basics of this game are.
I am in the computer networking industry today because of Doom. I had zero interest in or knowledge about computers or networking until I saw Doom. I had played Doom on my folk's computer and was absolutely floored by it. Then, one day the parent company of the business my parents ran delivered about 4 computers, a server, and Novell network software. Nobody knew what the hell to do with this stuff, and because we live in Nova Scotia, the "tech support" folks who were supposed to install it all (there were based out of the US) couldn't help. Somebody had to take it on and I thought, "Holy crap, I hear more than one person at a time can play Doom on a LAN. I gotta try this!". I dove in and setup my first LAN just to play Doom. <G> I'll never forget how cool it was on a Saturday night when I managed to get the network running. I called a buddy over flipping out because I had Doom running on two machines and... I COULD SEE THE OTHER GUY! And shoot him! It was amazing. Myself and two buds ended up at my folk's office until the sun came up playing Doom. I now owe my livelihood, the job I love, to that happy day. <G> I still celebrate it every time I build a network from scratch, the first thing I do when the network is up and running is fire up a game and "test" it. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Maybe someday I'll even be able to do networking in the gaming industry. I'm still working toward that goal.
I know some of you young pups (Nath (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) may not have had the benefit of that amazing revelation, you guys kind of grew up with it. Maybe reading some of these posts will help you get a bit of a different perspective on AH. I know my perspective is refreshed by thinking about those experiences to write this post.

Leph, you made me realize that I have only slightly glanced at boxes in the computer store since I started flying online. In the olden days, that was the first thing I would look at in a comp. store. Now I go to the hardware first, then maybe yak with the techs a bit, then peripherals, then, last, I'll look at the box games.
Says a lot about what HT & (gotta say it) IEN & The Rat guys are doing (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
- kidcol -
p.s. HT's still the man. As far as I can tell (& yes, I've played the others) he's the guy that pays the most attention to what the OL pilot's are looking for (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
1. There was some sort of adventure game on the TRS-80 but I can't think of the name.
Was that Hunt the Wumpus?
I remember F18 on the Amiga, when I was in grade school, I remember being impressed by the graphics! And that you could land upside down on the carrier...
------------------
LuckyDay
"What're you going to do, bleed on me?"

1-The Galactic Plage...1985 CPC simple invaders game.
2-Can't put only five...
-Guadalcanal (CPC) Endless hours with this one
-Desert Rats (CPC) same same (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
-SWOTL (PC)
-Great Naval Battles (I)
-DOOM
-Gary Grisby's Pacific War
-I.S.S. (international Superstar Soccer...this is a PSX game but with an emulator I can play it in my PC (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif))
-Falcon4.0 (it only gets better with each RP).
And of course, last but the best so far, Aces High (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
There are many others (F15 Strike Eagle series were awesome, the III was incredible) but for an example I think its okay (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
I remember a flight game on the old TRS-80 myself. After that I kind of took a break from computers until '96. Then I got a P100 and USN fighters. After that I played F18, M$ CFS, and M$ Flight Sim '98. AH is the first flight sim game I played online.
(Maybe I still have that TRS-80 around somewhere. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) )

I remember playing pong in 77 or 78 at a friend's house. That is the first home video game I remember.
As far as pc based goes.. I played some kind of tank battle game on an old tape-loaded computer we made in high school. Moved up to comodore pets from there.. then to Macs.
When I went into the military, I got my first exposure to x86 pcs. The first game I played on them was Falcon. I loved this game so much that I went out and bought an 8086 computer.
Its kinda funny, but Falcon 3.0 encouraged me to by my first 486 system too. About then, I'd played every flight sim released for PCs. I loved them all.
I have to say my all-time favorites have to be Falcon 3.0, Castle Wolfenstein (started it all as far as FPS goes), Warbirds (introduced me to all human opponents in aircraft), Indy Car Racing, X-Soldier (on LINUX), and the Rainbow 6 series.

1. The First game I played on a computer would be "Dungeons of Daggorath" on a TRS-80 with an amazing 16k of RAM. Loved the game but hated that it took me forever to beat it (I didn't have a cassette player to hook up to it and save games for a long time) I think it took me 3 hours to beat it in one sitting the first time.
2. wow, hard to pick 5, but I'll try.
When my brother and I were real little, it would have to be COMBAT for the Atari 2600. and the hours we spent trying to make "pool shots" off the sides of the screen to kill each other.
When I was young and my dad splurged and bought a tandy 1000SL PC, I'd have to say it was Civilization. I spent hours upon Hours getting nukes and taking out Ghandi.
As I got Older, I went on to Ultima 6, because of the involuted storyline, and it took me forever to finally figure out how to put that damn balloon together.
My first Online game would have to be "Rites of Passage" which was an all-text D&D type role playing MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) of good vs. Evil. It was a rush to get a group and kill a couple of "Evil" characters making them lose their equipment.
And Finally Aces High, because I've loved airplanes since I sat and watched TORA TORA TORA, Midway, Black Sheep Squadron, and all those movies with my parents. AH lets me Fly, try to shoot someone down, and die in the process, loving it every time.
I'll do the honorable mentions list too:
Battlehawks 1942: My first airplane game (and it only fit on one 3.5 low density floppy!) god was I addicted to that one for a while
Red Baron
Wing Commander, All of them
Pirates!
WB, because that's what started me flying online

Hamish!

First game was Doom and then Doom2(D2 was trippy man!) I also played MS FS4.0 in DOS Format.
First combat game(s) I played were AOE/AOTP when they hit the shelves(this was in '92/'93) A friend gave me Red Baron, I was addicted to that for a LONG time!
First online game: Confirmed Kill v.91 in late '93. I was 12 when I started playing it.
Games since then in:
Way too many to list.
Only ones that stick out of my mind:
RB3D, FS:SDOE(for like 2 days, what a joke), Flight Unlimited from Looking Glass(that thing was amazing for a 2D game), B17 Flying Fortress, Unreal(man that thing was detailed!!), Half-Life, Half-Life:Opposing Forces, Tribes, European Air War. There's more but don't care to dig through my stuff to list them. Well except for 1942:Pacific Air War and Pacific Strike and Wings of Glory.

I just remembered my first on-line game.
Net Trek on Unix workstations over the Internet. My guess at the year was prolly 1989. It was a definate GPA buster.
The player score in that game was your DI, or Damage Inflicted per time played.
The saying was always that: DI + GPA = A Constant
-
1. Hunt the Wampus on the old TI computers when I was about 5, I think. I played Pong before that, but I consider that a console game.
2. Baldur's Gate series - BG2 rocks! I am currently wasting my free time on this one.
Captain Goodnight (Apple IIe) A great game about a guy that has to save the world from some sort of doomsday device.
Half-Life - Many a night has been spent at HTC having LAN death matches.
Ultima V (Apple IIe) - I think this is the best Ultima title ever made.
Pool of Radiance (Apple IIe- I wasted a lot of my early teenage years on that stupid computer!)
AH, of course, but that doesn't count since I help develop it. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Space Invaders - (1976?) Video Game at corner hangout
Galaxia (?),Asteriods and Missle Command (1979) Showbiz pizza parlor on lunch break
Nintendo, Sega Genesis then Super Nintendo (for the kids during the 80's) Had a blast with Zelda (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
As stated b4 - first cpu was a 12mhz 286 which chugged out Battlehawk 1942. (92 -93)

First game, ummm, some Pacman clone on the Commodore VIC-20.
First Flightsim, Private Pilot (I think it was called) from Sierra, you flew a PA-28 from external view only, no scenery except rectangles for fields, and all you did was deliver mail.
Best games ever... I'd have to say Doom, since it's the reason I got my first PC, AW DOS (couldn't believe how good it was back in 1994, can't believe how bad it is now (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)), X-com, and anything by Microprose for the Amiga or C-64.
