Title: BB gun recommendations
Post by: nirvana on April 30, 2006, 06:04:19 PM
Being that we have some rodents...pests...behind my house, i've decided I need something with a little more power.  Was looking at the hunting rifles, 1000FPS.  $150 or somewhere in that range if possible, I think Wally world might have some for $120 but I haven't checked in months.

Also, you have to be 16 to buy one right?  Or is it 18?  Time to do some research...

I think you can get  good Pellet gun at wally world for about 80-100 USD

I'll never forget when  friend of mine killed a mouse w/ a BBgun.

Small hole in wall near the corner of the garage, mouse seen entering/exiting from hole to dogfood bag. Place a teaspoon of PeanutButter 2" outside the hole, set chair bout 6' away backwards so you can rest barrel of BBgun on chairback, wait less than 3 minutes, mouse exits hole and heads strait to PeanutButter, Mouse killed on first shot. Good Times!:D

My Daisy 880 .177 cal is supposed to go about ~750FPS.  Was really windy here today so the pellets/bbs weren't exactly hitting their targets.

Wally World?
Isn't that the theme park part in National Lampoon's vacation that Chevy Chase was trying so hard to get to, only to find it closed?

what sandy said.  killing rodents has become a very entertaining part of my week.  it takes skill and patience, often you get only one shot at the pesky critters.  I'm utilizing 4mm pointed pellets with good effect.  I have even killed a large male raccoon with that combination.

I have "high velocity" pellets for hunting, don't do much. 750FPS is about 200FPS at 20-30 yards I think, add a crosswind and you have nothing.  I use pellets for accuracy and BBs if I was to put a hole in it.

They have BB pellets now, accuracy of a pellet, carry through of a BB I guess. Basically a hollow point with a BB at the tip, kind of expensive too.

Get a Daisy Red Ryder with a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time.

{The cinematic reference was inevitable, just waiting for the even more inevitable rebuttal}

Those cheap daisy pellets in .177 are great. I bought like 50 different sample backs of high dollar pellets. I liked the daisy for some reason.

That only works when said rodents don't know Judo.  If said rodents live in close proximety to a USMC base and have lived off of MRE waste/leftovers there entire life they will in fact kick your bellybutton with there bare hands.  Just a warning.

Keep an eye out for a gun show.  You can pick up a decent chinese airgun for 30-40 bucks that shoots 1k fps easily.

I've had mine for about 8 years now, it is still powerful, accuratte and reliable.  Btw, you know you have the good stuff when the manual for the gun doesn't have a single word of english in it.

Oh yeah, should I go for a higher calibre then .177?  I was trying to stick to .177 so the ammo would be interchangeable but I don't care much anymore, .177 .20 or .22.  Break barrel any good?  All a learning experience.

P.S. I can check Gart Sports too, maybe the Bass Pro Shop or Sportsman's Warehouse.  I got a few days off and a tank full of gas.:aok

Seriously google beeman and rws airguns. Both make very hi-powered  pellet guns. Also there are airguns that are charged from a scuba tank.
I've seen 1 in 9mm with 900 fps muzzle velocity, 6 shot rotary mag, lever action. There is some really nice airguns out there just have to look.

Don't like the CO2 powered ones, get's expensive after awhile, and when it starts to drop off, it goes fast.

The one in the link is not co2 . It is compress air 3000 psi.
Also there are a few co2 powered that have larger bottles like paint ball guns.

I don't remember what model it was, but I bought a .177 daisy CO2 repeater and it's nice and accurate out to 20 yds.  Yea it's CO2 but if you're only after an occasional rodent, then it's not a big deal.  I like the multi-shot capability from the magazine.  Between shots is only a quick pull-push on the cocking lever, because of the magazine and the CO2 cartridge.

I put a laser spot sight on it and it hits the spot every shot for about 50 shots on one cartridge.

My bud had a Sheridan Blue Streak when we were kids. Compared to my Daisy that you pumped 10 times, that thing was scary. Was more like a .22

I've had my sheridan for over 30 years.

It still operates and shoots flawlessly.
Gives you effective control over how much force you want to use.

For plinking 2 pumps, birds close, 3, rabbits at mid range, 3 - 4.

The ONLY drawback that I've seen is that ammo is more expensive and harder to find.

I had a co2 pistol which i hid in a hole in the wall(caused by my foot inadvertantley going through while barrackading myself against the door from my older brother)

then one day said brother decided to light firecrackers and toss them from his window..parents thought it was me,searched my room & found the gun a pack of smokes and a 26'r of vodka..Think i got grounded for two months.

Do then have any that you slide forward like a shotgun to compress the air.  My Daisy isn't too bad but my 760 pumpmaster is a ***** to pump up.  I'm also still looking at some single pumps like this (http://www.airgun-express.com/displayprod.asp?str=P2FyPTEmbWlkPTEmcGlkPTQwMS0xMS04NDg0) Wal Mart sells some sort of 840 Grizzly model so I might look around after school today.

Ahem, has anyone heard about those immigrant parades today...

bkbandit, look at air soft guns, plastic BBs, usually won't kill, but will sting like crazy especially to a cat.  Yes, i've tried;)   And uh....the hunt is still on.

i used to have an old BSA 'mercury' in .177.   could happily shoot pidgeons and rats from reasonable range.I recently aquired another .177 with a scope, and i really prefer iron sights. A good friend of mine has polish family and he has some fantasticly painfull .22s from poland. (yes, we shot each other from 60 yrds to see whos gun was more powerfull)
some airguns ive seen are capable of penetrating your flesh from close ranges, but most i have used wouldnt kill a baby if you put the barrel up its nose and fired, research well or you might waste alot of money.

Get a 177 barrel break type.  CO2 is way too expensive and the power is inconsistent; they get weaker as the cartridge gets used up.  Some cartridges bleed off if they sit for awhile.  22 cal is way too hollow; poor mass to frontal area ratio so it bleeds speed faster.

Well you could get a machine gun, or a shotgun, or a handgun works well.  16 round clip, usually only takes 1 shot to scare them off.  Be careful thoIugh, they may become immune and you will have to get a paintball gun.
