Post by: EzzyDuzIt on May 01, 2006, 11:39:10 PM
i don't know if this has been requested before but, since we can already choose to play with tracers off how about we can chose there color? i'm pretty sure that there were green and red tracers in WW2 any way.

I would love to change the color of tracers or even how they look. I mean the ones we have now are alright, but I agree, some variation would be excellent.

SAS_KID,
tracers are special rounds with a  hollow base filled with some kind of pyrotechnic material. By varying the composition of that material, you are able to produce different colours, just like fireworks do.

I would be happy to just SEE the tracers fired by the Osti.

Very detailed description about how Tracers work! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracer_ammunition)

This is the best description I have found about tracers, it mentions the Russian airforce and Tracers used in other planes.

i heard that american fighter pilots used to load the last 100 rounds with white tracers so they could tell when they were low on ammo.

They are yellow with trails, not hard to see. I keep mine turned off though so it doesn't matter.

If you want to learn about weapons and ammunition, check out the excellent Tony Williams site. He's a fellow AHer. :)

Your absolutely correct! The fighter pilots of America would load special tracers into their P-51's and P-47's to alarm them of a shortage of ammunition. Because in WWII they didn't have ammo counts the same way we do in our cockpits;)

So It would be nice to have a loadout to change the colors of the tracers. And possibly also select a different color of the tracer when our ammo count reaches, say 150. That way if we're not paying attention, we know we're low. And it would make some great dogfights considering the enemy would also see the tracer color change!:lol

Actually the brits used them in hurricanes and spits to tell them when they were low on ammo. The last 100 rounds of each belt would be tracer rounds. They stopped doing this when the enemy realized what they were for. I don't think that P51s P47s used them much (for that purpose I mean, for telling pilots when they were about to run out). Especially since P51s outboard guns had less ammo, so when a pilot was down to 2 guns he knew he had 18 seconds or so of ammunition left.

Propably true, but the idea of getting that option would be nice. Didnt think about the outboard guns running out so fast, so I went ahead and posted it:aok . Oh, and about the spits, if they loaded the "low on ammo tracers" onto the Spit V. The Germans would've propably just flew infront of them 3-4 times until they realized they were low on ammo, considering that the cannons only hold 110 rounds.
