http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/retail_walmart_computers_dc
:O :rofl
Jethro: dis here com-putter ain't runnin' right. fix it so i can play that there fancy flyin thingy.

I'm there if they beat the local chain shop (that has already screwed me a couple of times) or Newegg on price. As much as I hate Wally Mart if they have components at a reasonable price compared to purchasing the same thing online they will reap a huge harvest in this business of selling components.
-
They cut their prices by selling utter crap. Pants that lose buttons and their pockets, shirts that fall apart in the wash, and socks that bleed just from playing hockey in.
I imagine their computer parts will be the first to have the explosive ability of a few hand grenades.
-
ti will be all 1-off's and factory seconds they sell at the discount price.
you really think they are going to sell goober a top of the line AMD processer?
what about when goober returns said item saying he got somethign different, when he really dropped the chip in a mug of beer or something, and they staple the package back closed and sell it to the next drooler.
:huh

When I read the article, it sounded like a really stupid idea. But after thinking about it I realized that computers have been around long enough that there is a wide range of people who will have no problem choosing components and even putting everything together. A few years ago it was a much more specialized field.
I think their biggest issue will be quality. I'm sure they will go with the cheapest hardware they can find and a good percentage will not work right out of the box or blow in the first few weeks.
-
I know a dozens of people that will be happy. No more 45 minute drive to Fry's. No more local brick & mortar stores with 150% retail prices.
I'm still ordering from Newegg though, even if it costs me alittle more. I haven't been to a Wal-Mart in a year. I've also never had a problem with Newegg, FrozenCPU, nor Mushkin. Everything shipped cheap, on time, defect free. I'll stick with them till they do me wrong.
-
This one will be easy.
Jethro: The game tain't runnin on my commputter.
Me: Tell me a bit about the computer sir.
Jethro: Well, I git it at the Wally Mart....
Me: Sir, I wish I had better news, but that computer will not run Aces High II.
I can say that already as I know they will be using the cheapest onboard video chip available on the market.
-
You get what you pay for. I hope Wally-World realizes that they're going to have to deal with a putload of problems when people realize the comps are just paperweights
-
HHHmmm I read the article. They stated they were selling components for the do it yourself builder not "custom built" computers like dell compaq and the like. Given they are selling components I imagine the builder will have options as to what vid card goes in the system. As to this point in time I don't think anyone has any knowledge about what wallyworld will be selling or who provided the components yet. Not a fan of the store per se, just witholding judgement until something is actually seen.

I'd like to learn how to build my own computer, but I really think I won't buy a computer that has to be built from scratch or one thats already built from Wal Mart.
If I want a computer I'll go to a computer store, if I need a can opener, or a curtain rod I'll go to Wal-Mart
-
The parts will be crap though *cough*made in china*cough.
btw, Building your own computer can save you alot of money on a decent machine.
DMF, if you ever plan to build yourself a computer, the motherboard should come with instructions. like putting together a model, but with computer parts.

Problem is Wallmart is notorious for selling lower grade cheaper items of higher end products. And I learned a long time ago never to buy anything mechanical from Wallmart
What they do is what they tried to get the maker of "Snapper" lawn mowers to do and he refused (I posted the article on it in another thread a while back)
What they wanted him to do is make a Mower out of cheaper parts to keep the price down and slap the "Snapper" brand on it.
They do the same thign with other Items.
Those 501 jeans you buy at Wallmart are not made to the same quality as you would get 501 jeans at say. The Gap.
thats why their products are cheaper.
Like the saying goes. You get what you pay for.
Like I told a potential customer today who thought my price was high on an estimate compaired to another contractor.
You dont Buy a BMW at Yugo prices.
If your willing to pay for a BMW you can get a BMW
But if your only willing to pay for a Yugo. Your only going to get a Yugo

Its not hard at all.
Just take your time

but they will pay 500 for an xbox and anouther 500 for a few games ...

Look again skuzzy... According to the article, it's more of an a-la-carte computer menu at the build your own burrito...er... computer counter. They're going away from the pure pre-built cheapo computer and trying to add in the ability to choose the components that can actually do the intended job. With Wal-Mart's pricing model and purchasing power, I bet they'll be able to offer fairly decent OEM hardware at competitive prices.
Heck, if I could go to a wal-mart and get quality components assembled and warranteed at the typical wal-mart prices (5-10% below competitor price), I'd consider it. Almost every nvidia card is made equal, regardless of who's name brand is stamped on the HSF cover, so a wal-mart 6800GS isn't going to be any worse than anyone else's 6800GS.

Oh yea just like model car right?
Well thats just great since when I was little I didn't build models, I played with Barbie colld, they come already assembled :)
I'm pretty sure I could put one togeather, I mean almost everything has a specific place where it goes, and I do know the difference between agp, pci and the different types of ram, but I'm more of a software end user, not the person makeing the stuff. I'm actually quite proud of myself, I got this computer at a pawn shop, modem, box, monitor and all and actually installed more memory and it works :)
-
you play AH and havent built a model airplane!:O
-
There ya go DMF, try out some new things. Just dont plug in the "Primary Master" into the "Power Supply":aok
And as for that wal-mart deal. Yes, they will offer the same products as everyone else. But I agree with all others, they will replace the true quality of the video cards, CPU's, RAM, etc... with lower grade products that will "crash and burn" on ya so you come back and buy more! Wal-Mart bugs everything, and had I not built my own computer, it would have self-destructed by now! That's how manufacturers make it, put in a self-destruct timer so they come back and buy another computer.
Well, making your own computer i'd say takes the ticking time-bomb off the CPU and RAM. AND DONT BUY IT FROM WAL-MART! THEY WILL PUT IT ON THE CHIPS AND HARDWARE!
-
I did not read about it eagl. I just shudder when I think of WalWart plus computers. It cannot be good.
-
They couldn't possibly do worse than Fry's.
-
If there is a WallyWill, there is a way.
-
I work at wal-mart and i think you guys are reading too much into this.
from what i understand its just gonna be a mix and match componants thing, tower, keyboard ,mouse etc.As a matter a fact I asked the electronics manager if this means we'll be selling memory sticks and she said no.:) but we'll know for sure in 2 weeks when we set this up at my store:aok ..............on a side note I don't work on the floor but they have me look at the computer return's to see if everthings in the box and I'm like "well all the memorys gone or the harddrives missing:rofl " it would be funny if we didn't smash these units and trash them:cry wal-mart gets almost no credit for any PC returns they are write-offs:(
