I got a can of raid for that problem. If all else fails I have a laced boot with a lot of weight behind it in reserve. But yeah, that's one big bug.

I killed one of those bugs in my room a couple of weeks ago...  Not quite that big, but essentially the same thing.

I liked it when he put the ruler down next to it...  almost 10 inches :)  The one I got was only about 4 inches long.

What kind of bug is that?

Centipede.  The ones around here (korea) don't grow much bigger than 4-5 inches as far as I know, but that one in the video appears to be a larger variety and since it's kept in captivity and well fed, it'll probably keep growing until it's cardio system can't keep up and it dies.

The one I found looked almost exactly like a smaller version of the one in the video, except for the color.  Mine was mostly black instead of reddish brown.

They're poisonous and moderately aggressive (ie. will bite humans even if not unduly provoked), but they don't seem to be too common either.  That's probably because they're predators and need their own territory so you just won't find swarms of them.

My brother got bit by one of those things in Hawaii (not sure how big).  It did a great deal of damage to his arm.

I never understood the penchant some people have for keeping bugs as pets (and certainly large poisonous ones like this). A friend of mine from high-school had everything from Bird Eating Spiders to Hissing cockroaches. Yearrghh...

Personally, the closest I've gotten is when I lived in a 120 year old apartment in Alexandria, VA. I think some of the cockroaches were older than the house, and a few were large enough to be put to work pulling farm machinery. My wife-to-be refused to visit after the time one about the size of small bat flew across the room and landed on the lamp next to her head.

When growing up in Corpus Christi, Tx, I kept a Wolf Tarantula as a pet in my room.  Never had another bug in it and only rarely saw the spider, but he grew to a nice healthy size.

Before I got him, my room was cockroach central for the house.

Nah, one time I did wake up and he was resting on my chest looking at me.  They are pretty docile creatures.

My only worry about hime was rolling over on him in bed.

They have a tendency to like small, dark places.  I figure the time he was on my chest, he was after a meal.

Skuzzy was your spider like the one in Home Alone?

(don't they bite?)
Title: Mouse Eats Bug. Or Vise verse??
Post by: Skuzzy on May 04, 2006, 02:34:55 PM
Never saw Home Alone.  Wolf's come in a couple of varieties.  Mine was multiple shades of gray covered in hair.

In rest, he was about 6 or 7 inches in diameter.  Body length was about 4 inches.

Most Tarantulas are very passive and only attack when provoked or in defense.  You can tell when you have ticked off a Wolf.  They raise thier abdomen almost 90 degrees to thier body and squat, always facing you.  This position is thier jumping position.  It is how they move quickly.

A full size Wolf can cover about 5 to 6 linear feet in a jump.  They do not have to jump straight either.  They can cover about a 90 degree swathe forward and back.

I got bit by him twice early on learning how to hold him.  He would crawl up and sit on my shoulder when I was doing homework or working on a model.

Better to have that one Tarantula running around, then 40 bazillion cockroaches crawling all over you during the night.

What is the bite from one of those like? Say, compared to a bee sting? They seem to have very big 'fangs' (not sure what you call those)

Since we are talking spiders here (kinda a hijack), I have a spider story.

Every year since i was 12, i've been going up to the boundary waters canoe area (BWCA) in northern Minnesota.  My Dad is originally from Ely, which is one of the big kick off points.

Anywho, I hate spiders :D.  About 5 years ago, we took our annual trip (about mid-august).  I hadn't been feeling well all day, and after paddling and portaging for about 10 hours, I had to take a dump of BIBLICAL proportions.  A poop of the apocolypse as I say to my wife :D

About 7:00 pm, we get to our site, I dive into the pack, grab the T-pee and head for the can.  The "Can" is an outhouse style toilet tucked back 100 or so yards from the water.

I get to the can, and there, sitting on the rim is the biggest wolf spider I've ever seen.  This is not the Taurantua that Skuzzy is talking about.  They are very aggressive, and really quick.  Not poisonous that I know of.  Did I mention I hate spiders?  This bastage was probably 5 - 6 inches in diameter.

I grabbed a big stick, intending to "shoe" him away.  Instead, HE grabbed the stick from me .....  No, just kidding, but instead of running off the can, he ran INTO the can.  The very thing I have to put my bare fanny onto.

At this point, I can't stand it anymore, I poke around inside with the stick, see nothing, drop my pants and sit down.  I'm just about ready to let the 'ol bowels relax when...

I FEEL THE BASTAGE CRAWLING ON MY HINEY!!!    AIEEEEEE!!!  I let out a scream that I bet the people of Ely heard.  I suddenly lost all need to poop, stood up and turned around....

And there he was, sitting back on the rim.    And I'm sure he was grinning at me.

True story.

I hate spiders.

Ever hear of Combat Roach traps?
Theres NO WAY I'd have a spider that big anywhere in my apt, if I ever see one that big I'm moving out.

While I can't come anywhere near to the toilet bowl story, I did once have to go through the deeply unpleasant experience of removing a small cockroach that had crawled into my ear during the night. I woke up with pronounced hearing loss in my right ear (which is normally my good one - burst my left eardrum in college) and a funny "tickling" sensation. Cue-tip made a slight crunch sound and on withdrawing it, you can imagine my horror on noting a small leg in addition to the earwax.

And no, I don't regard a Tarantula to be a good trade off for cockroach problems.... Strikes me as a tad like putting a Cougar in your yard to deal with the rodent problem.

From what I've heard, the poison of a standard Tarantula is no worse then a bee sting poison.

The problem is that the fangs are at least half an inch long.  It's more of a 'don't get stabbed' problem, then it is a 'don't get poisoned' problem.

Wolf spiders are VERY poisonous.  On a scale of 1-10, I'd put the brown recluse at 8, and the wolf spider at 6.  Just a note, but I'd put the black widow at 5.  The black widow's venom only gives you a bad fever if you do nothing.  But almost all hospitals have a simple antivenom.

The problem with black widows is that very rarely you'll find a person who's allergic to the poison.  Then that person is ****ed.  But then again, there are people who are very allergic to bees as well.

I would much rather get a bite from a Tarantula than a bee sting (I am allergic to wasp stings).  It just hurts for a bit.

Please note, not all Tarantulas are equal in terms of thier bite.  The Wolf's bite is pretty harmless.

Those had not been invented when I was in high school.

And the roaches (most folks call em that, but they are more water bug than roach) would just laugh at a can of Raid, take it from you, and beat you in the head with it.  Kill one and twenty tooks its place.

I'm siding with Skuzzy on this 1. For starters, when you think about Cockroaches in general, they are pretty damn tough. I mean, the ****ers would still be alive after a 7000 Megaton nuclear strike and just carrying on happily, unaffected by radiation.

I'd much rather have a Terminator style Spider that i'm sharing a 6 pack and  math homework with then spray Raid or whatever the Agent Orange equiv was  in Skuzzy's time.

Skuzz,

U rule!

Sempre boobies!

Like I said in another thread. The spiders and silverfish keep eachother in line in my house. Just last weekend they re-enacted the battle of the Bulge.

Funny thing, you guys freaked out by that peruvian death centipede probably like eating crabs and shrimp and lobster.

I found a giant water bug when I was a kid and kept it for awhile. Was interesting watching it eat.
