Title: Trim in 109 series
Post by: javelin1 on May 07, 2006, 02:40:15 PM
Question, is the 109 series "Flying tail" modled in AH ? it acts like the trim in any other plane. in the 109 series the entire elevator assembly was moved by the trim wheel not just the elevator. In a book gunter Raul said he used the trim wheel to turn inside of spitfires, using the tail and Slats.
just wondering if that was modled ?

The flying tail is indeed modelled, but one generally only sees it after a Hispano or 30mm round lands on it.

The fully movable elevator trim is not really a great benefit except in very fast dive speeds where the exceptional air movement against wing profile prevents the elevators from functioning normally. I'm not sure if 109 was capable of those speeds even in a power dive, though. :p

It also has a marginally lower drag when trimmed compared to a fixed design but again nothing worth the effort.

Rall refers only to a habit of the 109 drivers to trim the 109 slightly aft heavy so they could more readily make a tight turn with less control force. The elevator in 109 was rather small so in slow speed it was advisable to trim the elevator plane "down" ie. "aft heavy" so the elevators would remain effective despite the slow speed.

So, it was not a secret weapon or anything, just a needed feature to keep the elevator effective and its use does not really "show" in flight.

WW1 a/c such as the SE5a and the Sopwith Camel/Snipe had trimable stabs.

Oddity?

All other planes I've flown seem to be trimmed nose up.

But whenever I fly a 109 it SEEMS to be trimmed nose down???????

"WW1 a/c such as the SE5a and the Sopwith Camel/Snipe had trimable stabs. "

A few years ago I sat in Bristol Bulldog which was a fighter trainer in Finland just before WW2 and it had a fully trimmable elevator, too.

Wrag, do you mean the attitude in level flight? In 109 and 190 the thrust line is well below tailplane so they should fly slightly "nose down" in level flight.

190 SEEMS to go slightly nose up upon release of auto.

109 SEEMS to go slightly nose down upon release of auto.

????

This SEEMS to happen with or without combat trim.
