Any suggestions for a "decent" sound card? Ive used Creative Labs junk time and again, had good results and bad. My onboard sound(C-Media) is a real pain in the butt at times.

Just ordered an Creative Labs Audigy Game 5.1 for cheap, I'll let you know how it pans out.

I too dislike creative; but I just bought an "Audigy 2-Z" from creative & so far it's ok. I just bought it to help take some of the load off the CPU during AH play & alleviate some crackling I was getting from my on-board sound.

 If you're an audiophile & liked the discontinued "soundstorm" audio, then you might like the Auzentech boards. Here is a link to a couple of them on Newegg:

when you get your new sound card load just the drivers and not all the crapware that comes form creative.

Install the card, then go to http://www.creativelabs.com, on the Support drop-down menu select "Auto-update" and go from there.

That will install just the drivers and stuff you need to run the card, not all that "Audio HQ" stuff and the like. Although, when I *DID* have all that software installed, it sounded a lot better. I don't know why. It was running some program to process/filter the sound on the fly. I know it was a resource drain, but it did sound a bit better.

Ive had quite a few sound cards over the years , and i can say without a doubt that my latest card has been the best one ive ever had . The X-FI series from sound blaster hasnt given me one compliant , sound quaility is great , no hissing or poping, only bad thing is its expensive .

Another plug for Creative's X-Fi.  I went from NForce2 onboard sound to X-Fi XtremeMusic (the entry level of the series), and it is a night and day difference for me.

Best bang for the buck is the Creative Audigy 2ZS (OEM).  It's the best for the money and it costs around $50-70.  I had a SB-Live 5.1 but every time I came across explosions from planes or bombs, I would get stuttering.

With the Audigy 2ZS, it's smooth as silk baby. :aok

and went cheap.....Picked up a Creative Labs Audigy SE for $30 and installed it. Much better sound than the onbard C-Media crap, and other related problems have dissappeared.

I just ordered the AuzenTech HDA X-Plosion 7.1 DTS from NewEgg. I liked the rca coax on the sound card w/o having to install a big module on the front of your tower, or buy a seperate i/o module like you have to do with sound blaster if you want to use the digital coax i/o. Hope it works!

Yes, I cannot stress that enough.  AVOID, AT ALL COSTS, the installation of all the Creative Labs application and utility software.  Just install the drivers and you should not have any troubles.

If you install the Creative applications, prepare to format your hard drive as that will be the only way you can get rid of it.

DJ229 said this might not have a mic input in it.  Hope he's wrong, but I can always use a usb mic or bluetooth, I think.
