Title: Your Assistance Requested
Post by: Shuckins on May 09, 2006, 04:37:38 PM
The Boss Lady of three of the juvenile units in our system has given me permission to draw up a list of educational movies or videos in order to start a film library at our camp.

The companies that specialize in this type of film usually charge out the wazoo for their goods;  $29.95 being the average price for a vcr tape.

I intend to bypass that system as much as possible and order from on-line sites in order to cut the costs.

I already have a fair number of historical films in mind, since that is the field of my major.  Films that teach character and a sense of duty or are literary classics, such as:  Sergeant York, True Grit, The Odyssey, etc.

Where I could use some help is getting suggestions from any of you who might have something to recommend that I haven't thought of.  So any work that you can think of that fills the bill please post it here.  It can be in fields other than history as well;  American and English literature and math.

Bear in mind, please, that the kids we teach are between the ages of 13 and 17, with varying degrees of academic talent;  some being nearly illiterate while others perform at a post-high school level.

Appreciate your help:

Regards, Shuckins

Thanks MT...I had forgotten about those two.

March of the Penguins?  Never seen it.  Would our thugs be turned off by it?  They don't take too well to "cute" films.

I wouldn't call March of the Penguins a 'cute' movie...it's a movie about hardship and endurance on both the part of the penguins and of the scientists.

But there is also Tora! Tora! Tora!

Another movie you may not have heard about is "Trinity and Beyond"

The Right Stuff would be a great movie for your kids...problem is getting them to sit through all four hours of it!!!

I'd also recommend "Big Fish", and "JFK"...

Tora, Tora, Tora, is a good historical movie, but don't forget about Hellcats of the Navy -  Midway - U-571 - Patton - and Run Silent, Run Deep.

The Outsiders
Rumble Fish
Of Mice and Men
Star Chamber

Shane and Old Yella (yeah I know but teaches great lessons)

Military minded movies:

Taps
Field of stones (may be a little too much language)

One suggestion is to visit your local library and see what movies they have for check out. Normally they will have a large selection of educational films that will give you an idea of what to look for.
As to getting them....any flea market should have a good variety. Also Ebay is worth checking out.

Films that teach character and a sense of duty
it may not seem like it to some, but if you really watch the film you'll see the struggle with this exact thing.

Remains of the Day.

a butler for a englishman who was a nazi sympathizer during WWII. i think it is an amazing move though maybe too slow moving for teenagers.

also i have not seen mentioned:

Downfall (simply amazing movie)

Max (underrated yet really shows a glimpse into the nazi brainwashing)

Enemy at the Gates has a struggle with duty and honor (though some say the movie is completely no-historic)

Platoon

Dark Blue World

Wall Street is a great example of the struggle between right and wrong.

Old guy next door when I was a kid was in the Merchant Marine.. Murmask Convoy veteran, North Atlantic Convoy veteran. Survived two sinkings by Uboat, one in the Carribean, the other off New Jersey.  Musta taken a heluva lot of courage to walk up the gangway of another ship after going into the water twice before..

After that, was assigined to Atlantic Convoy and from there, Murmask. Lost all the fingers on his left hand, had no toes on either foot after the Murmask run.

Stuff he told me scared the living crap outta me.

Grew up, found out it was true.

Wonder why there's no movies about what those guys endured.. kinda leaves any small shred of sympathy for a Uboat crew totally flat.

Couldn't wait for the crew in Das Boot to get sunk.

Ok rpm I have to take your your word on that one I've never seen teh ending credits, I have been misinformed by the person that supposedly "knows" this stuff.
If its not historical, please scratch it from my list, the only fiction I like is scifi, and  some scifi might not be fiction much longer.

"Wonder why there's no movies about what those guys endured"

There is,  "Action in the North Atlantic"....starring Bogart, Raymond Massey,
Alan Hale and many more recognizable faces. Sounds like your friend might have wrote the script. Great movie, tv guide usually gives it four stars.

I think I saw that one once, isn't in black and white?
As far as my friend, he's usually pretty good about being correct about WW2, He seems pretty much into all that stuff. I'm more into just war movies, scifi, horror and really good comedy, and some good love movies.

Suggestions (excuse me of they're mentioned already...didn't really read every last word of this thread);

Glory

Bridge on the River Kwai

Das Boot

Band of Brothers

Tuskeegee Airmen

Horatio Hornblower (BBC & Disc or History ch?)  not historical, but

Master & Commander

HH and M&C are not historical in the strict sense, but I think would have a message you'd like to convey to the impressionable minds you refer to.  Good Luck...maybe something'll rub off!

Just got CRASH this week and watched it Saturday night. Better movie than i was expecting. Not a great movie, but I would recommend it. Good social comment on racism from various different points of view.
I viewed it as racism often fueled by anger and frustration...not real racism at all...and effecting everyone.
It is contemporary and probably well accepted by "your group" Shuckins.
