It's harder than it used to be, for me anyway...but it's all about the lead. If you lead them enough you will succeed. I have noticed if you *TAP* the trigger & fire only a round or two at a time it is a little more accurate. I like to lead the planes, depending on how fast they are moving, about 3/4 of the way across the screen usually, sometimes more. It also helps to put your mouse pointer at the crosshairs then "page-up" so you have a better field of view. After you put your mouse pointer in place of the crosshair, pick an object a little way away like a supply building or water tower & put a few rounds on it to check if your pointer is on, osties have a tendency to shoot low to the left, not taking into account for "randomization" this should get you in the ballpark.

Easiest solution for this is to spend a half hour in the TA.

Go to V6, jump into an ostie, turn on the lead computing gunsight.

Get someone to up a plane from 5 and buzz you. Start simple, straight in runs, and as you get it down slowly make the passes more difficult.

If the person your working with is any good you should be getting 2 - 4 hits per pass in 5 minutes. In 15 min you should be able to turn off the crosshair and still get hits.

The ranges, speeds and angles all vary so much that it is hard to hit with. And some people can't see the tracers which adds to the problems.

Try Ghosth suggestion. If you can get hits with the lead computing sight off you're golden.

I've got a lot of hours in them and it is still hit or miss   mostly miss.

Never heard of such. I learn something new everyday; & to think.....I learned it the hard way.

I went into the TA to try this

lead computing gunsight is a little green cross that appears infront of an enemy plane when you target them with tab. it's an arena setting that is turned off in all the arenas but the TA, because it's unfair. it basically shows you exactly where to aim to hit from your position.

seeing as most people are friendly in the TA, it doesnt work unless you enable friendly lock. you do this by pressing ctrl tab, you'll see a message come up and tell you that it's now enabled.

to cycle through the targets press tab, it will select someone in much the same way as the check 6 function. if friendly lock is enabled and you select someone, you will see the green cross ahead of them:aok

that is the lead computing gunsight:aok

PADLOCK TOGGLE FRIENDLY [CTRL][TAB]

So once in the TA (or offline once LCS is enabled) hit Control Tab.
This turns on friendly padlock. Should see host msg confirming.

PADLOCK CENTER TARGET [SHIFT][TAB]
Shift tab with gunsight on target, should put a green box around his icon.
If you lose view (out of range, etc) you'll have to light him up again.
Once he has the box around him you'll see a green X in front of him.
Put your sight on the X and pull the trigger.

If you have a plane with 2 types of guns you'll see 2 X's. Cannons will be the farthest forward, ie take the most lead.

PADLOCK NEXT TARGET [TAB]
Some prefer this one, myself I prefer the shift Tab, if one doesn't work try the other.

Questions?

15 - 30 min in the TA with someone decent flying target should see a huge instant improvment in hitting with ANY gun.

Trick is to try to "learn" or teach yourself how much lead for any given  situation.  Speaking for myself, my gunnery varies wildly from day to day.
Some days can't hit a low & slow plane 200 in front. Sometimes I up to find anything I drop a short spurt at going down.  Avoid alchol, sex, late nights, TV, and large females in spandex. As they are NOT good for your shooting. Your mileage may vary.

:D  Thanks guys...it seems I remember something about this from when I started trying to figure out osties. I guess it just got lost in the clutter of AHII tid-bits in my head.   :aok
