What are your thoughts on the next great PC-based video game? Every so often one breaks through and leaves it's mark in our memory. I've really like some of the games over the last couple of years but there really hasn't been a revolution of games like we had in late '90s. I am hoping the next one will not be another FPS (oh lord am I burned out on those) and I am also hoping that something new will appear for flight sims. Modern jets and WWII, to me, are kind of played out.
To be honest, I'd love to see a seriously kick-ass version of Fighting Steel, a WWII naval surface action simulator from 1998. Preferably with the ability to play anything from 1898 - WWII with jaw-dropping graphics. That's my wish and I'm sticking to it. Any other thoughts?
-
Napoleonic Naval Combat sim, with an emphasis on commanding a Frigate. with a Dynamic Campaign and all those goodys
GNB:NA was much much better then Fighting Steel, it was one of those game where you still remember moments of 10 years after you played it. For example. Sailing through a storm, My Scharnhorst is persuing a merchant convoy spotted earlier in the day, when suddenly the Royal Oak comes out of the fog less then 500 yards out. She fires first, she misses, The Scharnhorst doesnt. The Royal Oak takes a hit to the magazine and is blown to kingdom come, 97% of the crew wondering how they got there.
-
There's a company that has been updating FS for the last few years. I think the latest update I am running is 10.2 IIRC. The emphasis is on realism and not graphics. Just about all of the games I've played are memorable. But not like seeing the Royal Oak break out at 500 yards off the port bow (where the hell was your radar?). And how the hell does she pull within 500 yds. and MISS??? lol
-
I dont think Battleships had radar in 1940, or did they?
You got a link for these updates, might have to give fighting steel another try.
-
Oblivion is pretty good.
There are some good games comming from eastern Yurop(Sims and squad based games), but unfortunately marketting is very poor, and makes it hard for them to reach us. (At least, that's why I suspect these not getting here, or not getting translated).

Command & Conquer 3.
Nuff said.
-
For this upcoming year, at least with PC games, it's going to be another FPS year. A couple of flight sims are coming but they are more geared to the casual gamer and feature an acrade style flight model and combat. Some good RPGs, though Oblivion is by far the best of the lot, hell, it's even better than most MMORPGs. MMO' field is also going to get more crowded but from what I saw at E3, I don't have high hopes for most of what I saw there.
ack-ack
-
I'd be impressed with a top notch helicopter sim. There hasn't been one since Longbow III.
-
Will Wright's Spore is looking good, although it could end up being another "Black & White".
About the napoleonic frigate sim, I have it all planned, I'll start working on it as soon as I win the lottery
-
Armored Assault aka OFP 1,5
-
I want a computer version of Steve Jacksons "The Awful Green Things From Outer Space"
A great board game that would make a great computer game I think.

AH3?

Speaking of games..
half an hour ago i bought 1000 shares in funcom (makers of oblivion)
for the first time im in the games business :D

-
WWI sim hopefully the end of this year: Knights of the Sky (http://www.gennadich.com/)
The FM is supposedly being made by the same guy who did the AFM for Lock On: Flaming Cliffs.
1C/Maddox has announced Storm of War: Battle of Britain (first installment of a series) scheduled for release November this year. Probably won't be until Q2 next year.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. looks like it could be a different FPS... but that's if it ever gets released. http://www.stalker-game.com/index_eng.html
-
STALKER has been a game i have been waiting for, but i doubt we will ever see it.
(PS already out of the games business :D )

funcom doesnt make Oblivion.
they do AO and the new conan game.
-
Next big game? My vote is for "Spore". You can google a demo video on it, and it's getting some good press at E3. You start as a single cell organism in a pac-man style game, and you begin evolving. The next phase of the game takes your evolved organism into a "first-person eater". Eventually it becomes a tribe (and RTS game). From there you continue to expand over the continent, then world, then solar system, then the entire galaxy in the sandbox mode from hell.
That, or World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade expansion. With 2.2 million subscribers, it's a garuanteed hit.
edit: I think some of y'alls interests are so far from mainstream, I wouldn't get your hopes up =P I think the coolest gaming physics I've seen so far were from Lucasart's booth. The Indiana Jones game due out in '07 has definately taken ragdoll phsyics up a notch. They've also got some other IP they're using with it in an upcoming Star Wars title that is supposed to have very accurate materials modelling. Glass breaks like glass, wood breaks like wood, metal bends & tears like it should. The guy they put in charge over there is very sharp.

Is that Norweigan currency?...edit...nm, you sold out

yup.. norwegian. devide by 6-7 and you get $

If Spore's gameplay is as fun as it is intriguing, then I'll go with Spore.
It takes all the SimXXX games (including The Sims) to a different level. On top of the potentially engaging gameplay, you'll be able to see and use other people's creature creations... and wipe out their planets with your UFO. ;)
-
I'd like to see a "ringworld" adaptation of the quake/doom engine. Yea MS has halo, but a true ringworld (Larry Niven) adaptation complete with the creatures, puzzles, etc. would be very cool if done in a massively multiplayer setup. There are enough species with specializations that it would offer a lot of gameplay. Plus the novel puts forward sex as a way to smooth out inter-species relations, and that's gotta have a certain appeal :)

I want M1 tankplatoon version 3
i miss the good old microprose.
-
I dont know, maybe I'm to jaded, been playing these games since 1987. I havent seen anything new for awhile. Last game I played was Half Life 2. I didnt even finish Doom 3. I want to get COD 2 but for $50 I just cant get excited about a game I already played in the original COD just new levels and maybe updated graphics, gameplay is still the same.
I think the only game I can honestly say I enjoy replaying is Command & Conquer, every couple of months I go online and download some new maps and patches and replay it.

Steel Beasts 2?
Or how about Steel Beasts 1: Personal Edition - only 125 bucks!
-
anyone ever wonder if the ghosts from Pac-Man were clan members?
-
125 bucks what a crap
saw it never downloaded it
I want out of the box classic microprose style wth new graphics and a thick book included.

Doubtful. They never once ate me and then called me a "n00b", nor did they ever "pwn my fac3!!1!!!1!1!111"

After thinking about it for part of the day I would like to see someone make a game that combined gameplay elements from Splinter Cell, CounterStrike, Call of Duty/Medal Of Honor, Far Cry, and Half Life, etc with everything destroyable, all buildings usable, all vehicles usable, and no linear gameplay. Levels could have several smaller objectives that are optional to complete to reach the main objective of that level. Each optional object you complete makes it easier to complete the main objective. Give me different options to complete a level, I'm tired of the "run here, go to the third floor, find the anti-tank gun, run down 1 flight of stairs, shoot at tank and then die" only because you where too slow running up or down the stairs.
One thing I always hated about FPS games like Doom was you spent a freaking hugh amount of time running around looking for key cards to open a door. WTH!!, I'm a walking doomsday machine carrying rocket launchers, several automatic weapons and explosives I should be able to just blow the damn door off its hinges, shoot through walls, etc...
-
i remember on ps1 there was a really cool game called Colony Wars, and a sequel. Don't remember who made it but, for me at the time, it was pretty immersive.

Thick manuals are nowhere to be found nowadays :(
Yet the price is the same.

Microsoft got assed out. Sigil and Sony Online Entertainment just announced that they made a deal in which SOE will publish, distribute and host the servers and provide back end support (billing and technical support) while Sigil will take care of the community and customer support.
Basically, Vanguard is from the creators of the original EQ. Vanguard is attempting to cater to the more hardcore MMORPG player like those found in the original EQ. A lot of the ideas like player cities, wide expansive world and combined PvE/PvP servers, Jeff Butler got from Star Wars Galaxies when he was the producer of SWG before leaving SOE and forming Sigil.

Reading through these posts I keep remembering when I played X-COM: UFO DEFENSE. I've never been so freaked out and falling out of my chair laughing from the same game. THAT one was a classic!
-
X com and JAgged Alliance my favorites.
I wish for a Steel Panther 3D.
-
The original Ultima Online was great, until PvP got penalized due to a bunch of girls crying about getting killed . I played on a Japanese server and those japs were rulthless and funny all at the same time.
EQ was a girl's game/chatroom from the begining, iirc.
-
Quakewars: Enemy Territory (http://www.quakewars.com/) and Neverwinter Nights 2 (http://www.atari.com/nwn2/) are the two games that I'm looking forward to the most right now. QW:ET looks to be BF2 on steroids and I enjoyed the first NWN game.
Enjoyed Oblivion on the 360. Finally got around to finishing it today.
-
Medal of Honor, City of Hero's/Villians and AH are my all time favorites. Take all 3 of these games and combine them in to something and I think you would have on heck of a game.
-
All the great games are already made. The new ones aren't new. They're just prettier versions of the same tired games we've been playing for years.

Like I said... newer and prettier version of an older game. CNC can trace it's roots all the way back to Dune on the Sega Genesis. IIRC, the game engine on Red Alert was the same used for Dune on the Sega.

Sandman, you said "all the great games have been made"
Im just saying, that's dumb.

Yeah, but when did I mention PC-games?

Well... I was writing within the context of this thread as stated in the first post.

I'm so there dude.
The only full length game I've played all the way through twice is HL2. I just have a great time with it. Can't wait for HL3.
A new updated and expanded version of M.U.L.E. would be pretty cool but I'm sure only us old timers would play it.

Spore is looking fun if not ho hum as Black & White was.

X rated Chess.. oh wait. thats out there already (Love Chess)
An addon for the "Sims" "Pron movie producer"
LOL
What the next great game will be I dont know. Every time when I think I've seen it all something new gets thrown out there.
Personally Id like to see computerised versions of the old Avalon Hill Wargames like "BlitzKreig", Kreigspeil"
I miss playing those games. I just dont miss the 3000 little carboard squares you had to be careful not to loose lol

For a moment I thought about coding that up and emailing it to you Skuzzy, but I'm not proficient in C right now, so it would probably take me more time than the laugh would be worth...
However, I bet HT could bang that out for you in a few hours or less. Post it for download if he does!

Oh, I could care less about it (I could write it in a few hours). I thought the title of the thread was asking to predict what the next great PC game would be.
Tried to make a funny, and who would have thunk, some actually took it seriously.

Hey I like pong. I also like missle command & space invaders & pin-ball.
I though it was funny Skuzzy :-(
-
Missile Command was a blast (hehe). Spent countless hours playing it. Never really enjoyed Space Invaders.
My favorite game of all time was the 3D version of BattleZone (not the vector graphics version). When you could play it over the Internet, it was just a blast. When they killed the dedicated servers, it was a sad day for me.
-
Yeah, space invaders lost it's appeal pretty quick, I took up playing Galaga which I still have & play B.T.W.
-
Oh the quarters I used to throw away on the arcades playing Asteroids and that game where you had to land the lunar lander on the moon, and Missile Command
-
Hey, Skuzz... talk HT into putting some Missile Command batteries at the field instead of ack.
You might even get me out of a plane then.. ;)

I'm wondering if 2007 will finally be the year of Duke Nukem Forever...
Prey looks like it might have the 'move/asplode everything' physics folks are looking for.

ARMED ASSUALT if you liked Flashpoint, you will love this
Check the web site, http://www.armedassault.com/

I'm probably the only one who would like this:
a mix of Crimson Skies and AH, with a touch of RPG:
- realistic flight model
- fantasy planes (no more 'the Me190 Mk IX is over/under/UFO modelled' whines!)
- airships!!!! (man, flying and shooting down those was nice in Dawn of Aces...)
- market prices, you have to buy your plane or airship, your engine(s), your guns and ammo. You can also custom it (engine and airframe tuning, gun modding, colors schemes,...). There are also common goods to buy and sell.
- system generated missions to earn $ like haul x tons of stuff from A to B, escort said hauler, attack airfield...
- Your flying skills are yours. No RPG there. But you could use XP to be a little more resilient to G forces or pain (when wounded), develop a better eyesight (dot and icon range increased), be better at fine tuning planes or bargaining (better prices when buying/selling), producing stuff or even designing planes/engines/guns from scratch (i.e. lottery once a month, the higher your in-game skill, the better your chance to win, the winner gains a blue-print to produce a new type of plane/engine/gun... that he can use/copy/sell at will).
- the players can design new 3d models of planes/airships but every model submitted has to be accepted by the game designers. Again, an in-game reward can be offered to the best player-designer every 2-3 months.
Maybe someday....

^cool

Sounds like you just developed a project deSelys; get busy.
:D

I'm still waiting for the game I imagined back when I was a teenager.
I want a game where I can pilot a space ship, it takes place in a persistent universe, and has a high resolution terrain. I'm running from some big battleship in my freighter. I drop in towards a planet, heat shields blazing. My ship is shuddering from the occasional laser blasts from the pursuing ship, and just before I drop below a cloud layer, I drop a nuclear mine that detonates a few seconds later. As it does, I take the my ship down, come to an emergency stop above the water, and cut all power. By the time the fireball and radiation above fades (it hasn't hurt my pursuer, just jammed his sensors), my ship has sunk underwater. Without a power signature, as far as the other guy can tell, I've either somehow jumped to hyperspace, gone stealth, or was the explosion he just saw. If he's suspicious, he can bombard the ocean, but how effective would that be?
Or... I've made a homebase on a jungle planet. Using phasers or lasers or whatnot I've hollowed out a cave in a cliff face where I can park my ship. Same thing in asteroids, moons, etc.
Fleet space battles, from big ships to little. Carrying crew that can walk around in the ship and do repairs and man weapons. Have a couple of fighter sleds in the hangar that can be deployed by living players, etc etc etc.
Some day...
-
my fav game would be...
AH2
Free, payed for by whiskey (or other) ads on the silos in cities. Ads on sheep, or ads in crop fields made to look like crop cricles.

Arrrgh, earlier in this thread I say "Prey", but I actually meant "Crysis", the new Far Cry game.
Check out this technology clip:

Included, fully destructible environments, as requested.
