Can someone tell me in detail about Friday Night Squad Ops???? How well are they organized? Whats turn out like?
-
Sheep LOTS of sheep.... A few goats and donkeys but mostly sheep. :D
-
Very well organized, and it's not rare to see 200+ players participating in a FSO.
-
Plenty of info on the webpage for it.

Over 230 participating in FSO now, IIRC. Nice change of pace from MA. Frames are 3 Fridays in a row, then a week off. Folks start showing up 10-10:30pm EST, to get invites out of the way early, and we try not to show up last minute to make it easier for squadren CO's to manage, missions launch at 11:05pm EST. More structured play, you've got mission objectives and limited to assigned aircraft. Based on WWII senerios.
Object is to hit targets within the first hour, and usually the frames end within 2 hours, so depending on your sleep habits, you can go back to MA or what not afterwards.
You have to be part of a squad when they lift, either as a member of a registered squad, or invited to a squad that is short some members on a particular night. Can't do your own thing.
LCA been having fun flying buff mission last 2 weeks. We're running 47's this week. ....and no, no slots left in LCA for tommorrow night, we been at the limit 2 weeks running, and if interest keeps up, we'll plan on joining the next senerio in a higher pilot bracket (read the website for more info) at which time we will probably be more flexible in adding players before a frame. But most of our escorts have been running light in pilots, so someone will have room tommorrow night for a pilot.
Scoring and logs also available at the site:

You might find a name or squadren in the logs you can join with Friday night.
Then there are the Snapshots and such....walk-on events that are hit and miss, but yesterdays' was fun for first frame.

Mate FSO is what keeps me interested in AH...
Generally you only have one Life so, you want to stay alive. So if you want an adrenerlin rush playing AH, play FSO...
As far as I am concerned, The MA is nothing more than a training ground for FSO...
Unfortunately Its not something I have been able to attend in a few months

FSO and Scenarios are the best thing on AH now as far as I am concerned. Well flying with my squaddies on Squad night is tops but not by much!
FSO is intense, nailbiting and just plain FUN!

Best flying to be found in Aces High.
One life event, so no endless reups, which does change the way you look at things eventually.
It does a very good imitation of real combat, ie 30 min of pure boredom, followed by 2 min of excitement and 20 seconds of start raving terror. Followed by another 30- 60 min of boredom. :)
The thing about squad ops, is its never the same. Orders change, tatics change, one time your on top and the next your toast. One frame your flying high in the best fighter on the field. The next your a NOE suicide bomber just hoping to get through to target.
Its NOT boring, it may spoil you for the endless furball/landgrab in the main.
If your really interested find a squad you know & email them. You just need an "arrangement" with a squadron BEFORE the frame. That can be an email, a phone call, or talking it over in the main before the event.
What doesn't work is just showing up and expecting to fly.
"3. Guests
- Unassociated pilots, (those from non participating squads) will be allowed to participate in the event in order to give them a feel of what the Squad Operations is all about.
- Unassociated pilots may also post in the Squad Operations forum asking for a guest spot in the current Squad Operations. Or they may use the C.O. and X.O. contact list on the Squad Operations web site. They may apply for a “guests” spot that each squadron holds. It is entirely up to the squadron CO. He will accept or reject such an application or request from guest pilots.
- If guest is accepted into the squadron for the Squad Operations, in the eyes of Squad Operations crew he is a part of this squadron, and the CO of his squadron will be held responsible for this guest's actions/behavior. "
If you can't find a spot anywhere else cav email me at
ghosth@mcleodusa.net
We'll hook you up for a frame or 2. We do have high standards and expect people to behave in a civilized manner, and have fun :)

Its why I fly Aces High.
The setup uses historical matchups. Not spit1 vs La7s. The CM designs a 3 frame series. The squads who are part of it are often mades up of people from lots of different squads of the MA.
Each side is as balanced as close as it can be. Each frame a side CO from a squad who has the duty that week sends out orders to all his sides COs. You have attack or defense plans depending on the design.
Its about the only time in AH i try to survive. It makes you play as if you have only 1 life to live, and actually for an FSO thats all you have. It doesnt take alot of setup time. And the time before launch is spent hangin out shootin the crap with buds. Once it starts its non stop action trying to kill and stay alive, re-arming and going up again.
If you havent tried it, get in a squad there and try it. Often times some squads are needing bodies to fill out their required number of participants. If you come in early, and see a guy you know ask if there is room for you. You will be added to the squad and as long as you show up each FSO you are golden.
Try it.

Nothing cooler that providing a CAP at an airfiled while you squaddies rearm and fuel up.....
The whole time you watch the horizon
Then the black dots appear and theres a frantic vox com between you and you C.O.
"I have cons NW of the airfield"
"How many"
"3 I think, maybe more..."
"Hold on I will see if they are ours"
The squad channel goes dead silent... as your CO communicates with command trying to determine if the cons are ours or there.
You have maybe 5 minutes of fuel 25% ammo and 10 squadies on the ground and those three cons to the NW..... as they get closer you realise that its not 3, its 5, no wait 6.....
What happens next.... I guess you will just have to play to find out

That's a perfect example, mussie. Its more about team work, responsibility to your squad mates, completing the mission assigned to you.... the kinds of things not often found in the melee of the MA.
Still a game, but it adds a more realistic flavor to everything.
