Title: Catapults...
Post by: Saxman on May 12, 2006, 02:46:37 AM
How about catapults on the CVs for getting them big, bloated, fully-orded blue planes off the deck? Seems that ever since the last patch trying to get an F4U airborne with full gas and ordinance is a real touch-and-go, one degree of bank from spinning into the drink affair even WITH full flaps and WEP.

Saxman, throttle up, wep, hit full flaps. Slight lift just as the wheels roll off the edge and get the gear up RIGHT away!

Don't try to climb until you have speed and the flaps are back up. Just hold it level and pull flaps as you gain speed.

Like I said, it's still a tug-o-war between level flight and spinning in even doing that.

F4U-1D with 100% fuel, rocks and 2x1000lb get airbone easy enough with full flaps. You can up it even with flaps at 2nd notch.
Personally, i have more troubles with keep it on deck while rolling.

Here's a link to a film that demonstrates taking off in an F4U-1D with 100% fuel, two 1,000 lb bombs and rockets. I take off, build speed while raising flaps, climb out to just under 800 feet. Then it's hook down, gear down, flaps down and trap back aboard with full load.

Upon coming off the flight deck, use only as much elevator as needed to maintain altitude. Concentrate on building speed, then climb-out normally.

Here's the film (http://home.att.net/~c.c.jordan/film46.ahf)

My regards,

Widewing

Few days ago i tried to get airbone full loaded F4U-1D with first notch of flaps only. After dozen of crashes i did it finally :aok (have film but cannt post it right now). That is the real challenge, i still crash in 4 of 5 tries. Upping with flaps at 2nd notch sooo easy :lol

I wonder is it possible to get airbone without flaps at all  (and w/o rolling back from spawn position)

Thank You for the film Widewing, you made it look easy. :aok

I was trying with half flaps and was crashing into the water over and over, to the point where I thought it was a bug and switched to the F6 off the deck.

I'll give the full flaps a shot.

In second time i even had small alt reserve, i believe taking off w/o flaps must be possible :aok But i suck too badly for it

No, but I have it on very good authority that trebuchets were used to launch heavy F4U-1C's on the mission to sink the Kurile Islands.
