Title: Increasing Memory Question
Post by: Wizer on May 13, 2006, 07:53:06 AM
My Ram is currently 512 mb ddr.   I have notice that when running the game, I am using 486 mb of ram.I have been thinking about increasing it another 512 MB to 1024.  Before making the investment, could some one tell me if  increasing the RAM inprove game performance in terms of Frame Rate, visability, etc.   Thanks   wizer:)

if you are running XP, you need a gig anyway

but yes, it should nelp the performace of AH2, can't see how it can not

GODS yes!!!

I went from 512MB to 1.5GB, and it makes a HUGE difference! HUGE! Loading times for everything (application, game, you name it) are much shorter, I can run things now that I couldn't run "then" (HL2) and the only thing I did was add more ram.

I.M.H.O. increasing memory is the biggest performance boost you can get for the least amount of money, up to a point.

I've made 2 memory upgrades, one in air warrior and 1 in aces high with no noticable improvement in frame rate.

My cpu now, as then in aw, had done all that it could do.  More memory yielded no improvement.

yea, if you notice your hard drive working when you are playing, you prolly need another stick or 2.

Yes I meant "biggest overall system performance boost" not neccesarily frame rates.

I upped my memory from 256 to one gig & I saw a difference, I also upgraded my CPU from 1.8gig to 2.8gig & saw an increase there, they are slight increases & the average user hardly notices.

For general PC performance, the memory uprgrade is the cheapest significant upgrade you can get.

Edit: The "up to a point" was refering to - anything over 2gigs of memory probably won't get used & will be a waste of money unless your doing some specific memory intensive applications.

Thanks for the replies.  I added another 512 mb of ram and I now have 1 gig of memory.  True the frame rate did not change (but I did not expect that since I also have 256 meg of video ram and only using 42 megs); however, the overall game performance has been greatly improved.  I noticed that when I had 512 mb of ram, the old hard drive was talking and using control I I observed that I was using 486 mb in system ram in Aces High.  Now that I have 1 gig of memory ram, I am using 686 mb of ram (in the mountains or heavy traffic) and performance is great.   I got a $40.00 rebate on the  stick of ram so it only cost me 29.00.      Salute All   Wizer
