I Washington State it is Illegal to keep one of these over 5 ft long. Anything over 5 ft long is a breeder.

No doubt ... the females, around the age of 20 finally become breeders.

I've caught a number of them nearly that big in the Columbia River. The initial run after you hook one is a 40mph line burnin reel smokin run for 200yds or more. After that it's like trying to reel in a pickup truck from the bottom of the river. I can't bring one in all by myself. You need to trade off with someone to get one in. Also your arms will be burning & your back will really be tired.
 Great fun!!

funny thing is, i caught that one once when i was out in my canoe.  for the record, i was using an ultralight reel.  i battled that fish for over an hour before the seas kicked up, and dodged a few water spouts.  the unfortunate part is this.  while battling this fish, a mackerel (not usually found in these waters) jumped out of the water, chasing a dragon fly, and got tangled in my line.  in the process i my line was broken, that fish got away, and to add insult to injury an electric eel landed on my boat and zapped me.   ah well, cheers to the one that got away:)

That fish was probably around when Columbus discovered the New World back in 1492.

Awesome sight, can't imagine what it would be like to try to catch one.
Although I can well believe it would wear out 4 people in the process.

11 feet long, totally awesome!

That fish is probably around 80 years old.

The largest sturgeon on record was 24 feet long, caught in Russia.

So, is it edible or for the cat?

BTW, how about dynamite instead of a fishing line next time :D

Sturgeon on the Columbia River have to be between 42" - 60" to keep. They are as good eating as any fish gets. They also don't have a bone in their body. (no teeth either)

OK, so you refuse from eating fresh sturgeon? I only hope that you always throw away fish's guts, so someone will enjoy several gallons of caviar... Caviar from such old big sturgeons is the best and most expensive.

Grrr, i imagine mixing fresh caviar with stone-salt, I doubt if I'll have enough patience to wait for 5 minutes to eat it :) OTOH - it's just enough time to open a bottle and pour vodka :)

I don't know if it's now a season for sturgeon caviar, maybe it depends on specific place and sturgeon breed.

I can't believe people torturing a poor little fish with a sharp hook, pulling on it's mouth for six hours just for the sport of it.

They poked a hole in that fish's mouth, you know!

The shame! The should just eat canned tuna!

Yup.

I hate fish.

I love killin' 'em.

I enjoy their final struggle... the gaff; the suffocation on the deck.
