Auto analyst Erich Merkle with the Grand Rapids consulting company IRN Inc. said the decision fits with steps GM has taken to bring the Hummer brand to more mainstream drivers with the H2 and H3.

>>>

so now it's just a ugly pickup truck.

LOL.. I remarked once that a Hummer had the same wheelbase and width as a cabover/sleeper white freightliner semi... which, carries 3 times as much fuel, weighs less, has a better view and gets about the same mpg. And in a few seconds can be backed under yer 45' redneck palace to haul it someplace with a better congressman.

and it ain't any uglier.

Well, I guess the demise of the Hummer was a triumph of common sense over "societal insistence" as to what vehicles should be available.

HT, I know some vehicle related words are different here, but your use of the word wheelbase in your last posts seemed incorrect. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the distance between wheels on the same axle is the track, whereas wheelbase means the distance between front and back wheel on the same side of the car.

the cabover part does not include the trailers(s) beet so maybe he did mean the wheelbase.

What turned the Hummer into an ugly pick-up is when they changed the trans axle system into regular differentials, with that single change it no longer was a "true" four wheel drive & the ground clearance became no better than a regular truck. A differential hub (or pumpkin for the other rednecks out there) hanging down snags on every rock, ledge, stump & general high spot there is. The Marine Corps Hum-V with the snorkel kit is for men & the H2 & H3 are for soccer moms.

iirc, the H2 platform is a Yukon with a new body. Saves a bundle in development on a vehicle meant for the street & not-offroad. Not sure what mid-size SUV they used for the H3.

H3 is based on the Colorado chassis.  Shares the same inline 5 cyl engine, with no upgrade available as far as I know.

I knew GM would screw up the Hummer when they took it over.  It's always been one of my dream cars.  First the H2 box-on-a-silverado grocery-getter abomination, then they kill the brand's flagship "supercar."  What's next, a FWD compact car?  Way to kill a brand... something GM is excelling at lately.

"Way to kill a brand... something GM is excelling at lately."

GM has a long tradition of screwing up anything they get right.
