Title: Lookin to upgrade Video Card
Post by: 68DevilM on May 13, 2006, 06:30:48 PM
Current system:

DFI Lanpart UT NForce 3 250 Gb
AMD 3700 2.4 754 pin
1 Gig of Corsair DDR400
80 Gb 7200rpm hard drive
400 watt power supply
radeon 9800 pro 128mb
Creative Audiogy 2zs Gamer 5.1

looking at the  ATI All-In-Wonder X800 XT 256mb 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO AGP 4X/8X Video Card for 269.99 U.S. Dollar on newegg.

i might go so far as to upgrade to the DFI Lanparty UT NForce 4 if it will reap any large benifits, and i have a 120gb hard drive that i use for storage that i can always swap for the 80gb that i use for my operating system.

question is:
i get constant frame rates as it is at 75 fps with current configureation.
only thing im starting to notice is the textures are getting a little rough, expecially the ground, and im starting to not see single trees anymore until im right ontop of them. so will this upgrade help at all? i guess is the question.

I went from 1 gig of ram to 2 and from an ati 9800pro to evga 7800 gs oc.
I was looking at ati also until i saw comparisons here:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evga_e-geforce_7800_gs_co_superclock_review/page5.asp
I had to upgrade my power supply as it only had 16 amps on the 12 volt rail.
I am now able to run ah2 in its highest settings - it has never looked better

$269 is pretty expensive for an X800...  You can get a 7800GS or GT for just a bit more than that.

I have a 7900GTX & I still see entire barns popping up now & then with my detail set to around 3/4 up, I think you're still in a good range at 75fps if your detail settings are more than halfway up with high textures.

The big thing is, upgrading right now, you are on the cusp of direct-X10, better to stick it out until this winter or next summer if you can & see what's available then. If Vista is ever released the 64bit architecture will get a avalanche of support also, & that is pretty much all the GPU manufacturers are waiting on to release their new DX-10 compliant cards...Vista.

At one point i had the exact same machine , and upgraded to an X800 pro and was happy with the performance . The 269 dollar price tag on the one above is too high thou . You will be able to run more  anti aliasing  with the X800 and have a smoother frame rate .  .

Find some reviews to see if your rig will be stable with that memory configuration.  If the manual says it's supported then maybe it is, but you might have to turn down some speed settings if you use 3 sticks of memory or 2 sticks that are different sizes.

You can score the 7900GT KO for under $300 & the 7900 is blazing fast, of course I'm not knocking the 7800 GT or GS or LE or any of the other models either, they're all good cards.

I think there is an AGP 7800.  Not sure if there is an AGP 7900.  The 7800 is essentially the same as a 7900, just a touch slower.

No, there is the Gainward BLISS 7800 GS+ (512MB) with the 7900 chip (and 24 pipeline) onboard. It is actually the fastest AGP video board in the market.

Tip for the 7800GS -

To prevent game lockups go into your BIOS and set your PCI Latency Timer to 256.

Cool, never heard of it. So if it's got the 7900 series chip, why is it still called a 7800 & a lowly GS model at that? Seems they'd make more sales advertising the faster series chip.

If it's worth the risk for the $100 cool. I trust the egg, RMA is never a hassle & they get products to you fast, I have had orders arrive in less than 24 hours from them.

E-Bay on the other hand has left my butt sore on more than one occassion.

Actually, I really dont know why. Perhaps it could hurt the AGP-->PCI-e migration ...

I see where you say, built for windows vista? So this is a DX-10 card? I'm really confused now as to why they are marketing a VC with a big bad GPU as a lower price model & doing it for AGP while making it a DX-10 compliant card. I was certain the first Nvidia DX-10 cards were going to be the 80' series.

I'm glad I got the card I have when I got it, so far I haven't had the mini-freezes & artifacting associated with the 78 & 7900 series. I was having a bit of a problem (only in AH though strangely enough-not) where the card would take quite some time while in the hangar view to "paint" in the frame. I was seeing a white outline of everything for a few seconds before it got on board with the frame & finished rendering it.

I'd never buy a vid card on ebay.  There are SOOO many vid cards that don't work right and can't be RMA'd...  I had a 6800GT that would work fine for an hour and then die.  If I underclocked it it would run a bit longer.  So I could probably have sold it on ebay and then blamed any future failures on the buyer.

Why not RMA it if it's defective?  Because a lot of people lose their RMA rights because they do stupid stuff like bios mods or ripping the heatsink off.  So guys will burn out the gpu or damage the memory with a bios mod that ups the voltage, and since it doesn't have the factory or approved bios, they can't RMA it.  But it sort of runs, so they sell it on ebay.

Yea some stuff on ebay is legit but life is too short to have to deal with the crooks so I'll spend a bit more money and get a new product with a warranty from a reputable company.

If you go ahead with the ebay purchase, You might be interested in something I'm selling.  I have *right here in my hand* a real diamond worn by the queen of england!  It's worth $50,000 but I can't report that much income on my taxes so you can have it for $10,000, if you send a certified check.  It's in "like new" condition...

Just like the "like new" book I bought used from amazon.com that was really a highschool library book complete with that indestructable ugly orange vinyl binding that was pulled from circulation.  It was "like new" because I guess not many people were checking it out...

If your into tinkerin with bios flashes , the X800 gto is easily flashed from 12 to 16 pipes . Thats 4 more pipes for less money ($169)  that the X850 pro . The X850 has a higher core and memory speed , but the gto;s overclock well .  It just depends on how comfortable you are with bios flashes .  Normally i wouldnt suggest this , but the mid-higher end agp market is really crappy .

Unfortunately ATI released the X800XL around the sme time the X850pro came out . The 800XL had 16 pixel pipes , 4 more that the 850 , and was close to 75 dollars cheaper .  The X850 has 12 pipes ,  higher clock rates on the core and the memory than the 800XL , but they performed almost the same due to extra pipes .  I remember this because i had bought a x800pro about 2 months before they released the 800XL and was slightly mad i hadnt waited .
Dont take this the wrong way , the X850  is a great card , it just wasnt real popular due to the way ATI priced it , and how they released the XL .

EDIT: Here is a 3dmark05 bench

http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx

EDIT X2:  Here is a better one , It's a pcie chart , but that doesnt matter because AGP and PCIE are within 1-2 fps when comparing the same cards .

Well it looks like the X850pro is also able to unlock the extra 4 pipes on VIVO models . 16 pipes on that card gives it a bump of around 10% . Dont know if its worth taking the chance with a dead card , but here it is .

If you play around with goofy bios updates and unlocking disabled card features, you deserve what you get.  If it works, that's fine.  But there's a good chance you'll either completely kill your card, or you'll start having massive graphics corruption because those locked pipelines were locked due to being defective.

It's possible for a slightly defective chip to still be released as one of those lesser models, with the bad parts locked out.

There is no free lunch, not on ebay, not with modified bios, and not with overclocking.  They all have risks that can result in a completely non-functional part that can't be returned, because you voided the warranty by messing with it.

Yes there's a chance you can bump your performance up a bit, but why not give the thing a chance BEFORE you try to destroy it?  Then if it's not fast enough and you're willing to risk destroying it for a little more performance, go ahead and modify it.  But give it a chance before you mess with it.

16 to 12 isnt huge , maybe 10- 15 % if your getting 100 fps 115 isnt that big a deal hehe . For some reason i missed the fact that you ordered the x850 .  Its a great card , and you will be happy im sure .  GL   38
