Fellas, been watching the constant threads where everyone seems to be beating each other up pretty well over this latest international fracas. Thought I'd introduce a new thread to siphon off some of those rants.
In short, what is your favorite post-war (1946-1972) jet and why? I don't want to see any great influx of jets in AH. I merely was reflecting fondly on my childhood the other day, about growing up so near a NAS and being able to watch dozens of jets fly low over the house each day in the landing pattern. The height of the Vietnam War so there was always plenty of activity.
With that background, is it any wonder my two favorites are the F8U Crusader and the A4 Skyhawk. I just love the looks of them and of course at that time, there were some pretty colorful Navy paint schemes and squadron colors. Also loved the Phantoms. Since they flew out of Lemoore, they were a little more rare but boy could you hear them coming a mile away.
So take a breath, take a break and let's see who likes what post war jets and why...

Viet Nam era - the A4 (scooter)

Mig17, now THAT was an awesome plane. It gave their opponents fits, especially the Phantoms. Very manouverable and fast, well armed.
Its downfall was no missiles. But hey, thats for rutabagas :)

I love all the Century Series fighters a lot. I don't want any of them to be jealous so I will pick a bomber. :)
B-58. Arguably the best looking jet ever, with performance to match the looks. I don't think it carried a conventional weapon once during it's lifetime.

Aahh it's great to be back after almost 2 months without internet connection! :)
My favourite post war jet is without a quoestion Mig-21 F or Bis, both are great. Both served in Finnish Air Force in the Rissala AFB from where I'm in reserve from so I'm biased ;). The bare alumium looks so good on the F :).
Great pick on the bomber Funked! That thing is awsome :). One of my favourite jet bombers too. BTW I have a scanned version of the orginal Hustler manual I found from the net somewhere if you are interested. I also like the century series myself, Starfighter is my favourite there.

The Swiss jets were always the best looking by far. I liked thiers a lot. But for me the F-104 would be the one I'd kill to have a ride in while the A4 Skyhawk is the one I'd love to have in my garage.

I like Navy Jets.
The old Cutlass was interesting... and the Skyray too.
I've always been partial to Grumman.. The Panther and Korea, and the Intruder in Vietnam.
In the 50's The Vought company put up a heluva fighter with the F8F Crusader... was a superb carrier jet, called the "Last Gunfighter" in some places, and the pilots loved 'em.
I guess the jet that most clearly dominated the airpower scene from mid sixtys... The Phantom. That was one heluva potent Jet.. did everything it was aked to do.
With the 1970's the best carrier plane, arguably the best plane in the armerican arsenal period; was the Fleet Defender.. the Grumman F14 Tomcat. Still one heluva plane, almost 35 years after the first one got spit offa carrier.

Not that I am totally sure about this one, but are you sure your not confusing the Swedes with the Swiss? Saab Draken, Viggen and now the Grippen?

In the book, Math, they flew the Banshee (not quite as mean looking though :) For me (rough deployment dates):
1940s: Vampire (Performance and unique looks)
1950s: F-86 or Hawker Hunter (early and late planes, with history and looks for the f-86 and performance and looks with the hunter)
1960s: F-104 or F-8 ("the missile with a man in it" and the navy Gunfighter of the era)
1970s: F-15 (Air Superiority when it was most eneded by NATO)
1980/90s: Grippen (sp?)(I just like the whole package. The truly affordable export aircraft for the rest of the world, IMO)
2000+: F-22 (Have to see if it lives up to the hype)

1963:
Got to be the TSR-2. Better than anything in the world at the time, but was cancelled by a short-sited government. The TSR-2 was a Short Take off and Landing (STOL) aircraft, with all-weather, day and night capability. Unrefuelled range of the TSR-2 was several thousand miles on its massive internal capacity. Mach 2+ at altitude, with a Mach 1+ speed at low altitude.

Great replies folks. Gotta say, I forgot to mention the Mig17 as well. After all the F8Us needed something to dance with. I also loved the century series fighters. My fav there was the F105. Anyone read the Thud series of novels by Tom Wilson? Set in Vietnam/Thailand. Excellent books...

TSR.2 is not pretty but it's macho. Similar to F-111. Low level supersonic terrain following nuclear bomber.

A guy I worked with was on the design team of the TSR.2. Gotta agree that it is a great looking aircraft that had a lot of potential. Pity that the British MoD thought manned aircraft were obsolete. Such wisdom and foresight...

F-101 Voodoo
Were based here, lots of guys flew them and one on static display at the base. I keep telling myself that someday I'll win the lottery, find one in fly-able condition and fly it home :-)

Ever seen the range film of the Phantom II smacking the Nellis sand on a bomb pass only to emerge a few secods later shaking the sand off like a wet dog (true f--kin story)? THAT'S the kind of plane I want to go to war in! You can have all the pretty jets you want, but gimme two engines, two crewmates and McDonnell Douglas stamped on the side and I'm there.

Nothing is cooler than the F86. The closer you get to 1939, the cooler the aircraft get :)
EDIT: Which is to say that 1939 was the apex of aircraft coolness - not performance.

Its the F15E for me. This version is the Air to Ground workhorse for the USA. I have worked around these things for 8 years and deployed with them in support of Northern and Southern Watch. the force these AC provide AOR commanders is incredible. It is a true "force multiplier".

I haven't read those... but Richard Herman Jr. did a couple of pretty decent Vietnam Era novels... one of them with the main character flying a Thud.

Heyas Crapgame. I lived on base at Corpus and right off base at Norfolk during the mid-late sixties. I remember seeing 3 Apollo capsules with scorchmarks on them passing by our car on a flatbead at Norfolk.
