I just downloaded and installed Firefox a couple days ago. A couple things I have noticed are that web pages display faster and that a couple websites I visit regularly that have popup adds, those popups dont happen anymore. I have popup blockers for IE but the popups from those 2 websites would still happen. They dont anymore with Firefox. Anyone else notice these types of differences?
-
Firefox rules. Although it still lets in the occasional popup.
Death to ActiveX and IE.
-
Tabs are almost as good as boobies...Well maybe not that good but their nice.
-
You can kill ActiveX in IE.
Actually, you should kill ActiveX in the "Internet Options" anyway. If you use Outlook, or any derivative thereof, you are still exposed to lots of nasty stuff.
-
add these extensions to it
no script
add block
image zoom
mouse gestures
I have java on mine but with no script you can set each website with permission to allow ... they are blocked by default
-
the adblock extension for Firefox is the greatest thing ever. Grab it.
(you do know about extensions, right? In firefox go to tools menu -> extensions-> get more extensions)
I'm using Linkification, IEview, Gmail notifier, fasterfox, pdfdownload, tabbrowser preferences, DownThemAll, forecastfox, and adblock.
-
I'm a firm Firefox convert. I cringe every time I have to use IE.

Does anyone here use Opera Browser?
I'd like to know how FireFox compares to Opera...(been using Opera exclusively for 7-8 years now)
-
the fox has blown all the other browsers away ..

Don't forget the PDF Download extension
and Thunderbird is a really good email client too.

Grab the new bugmetnot, it fills in all those lame "you must register to read this article"

I concur with the Ad Block yay-sayers. If you only get one extension, make sure it's this one. Of course, you don't have to just stop at one. ;)

you can make it load pages faster if you use some of the above tweaks.

What is an extension?
-
I used Opera for about a year. Firefox has a better interface for me, and I rarely get to use my spyware cleaner.
I've deleted Internet Explorer from every computer in my office, they run Firefox or nothing.

I used Opera when I was playing Ogame and found it very similar to Firefox. I went back to the Fox though because it just feels better to me.
-
Elfie..
I have been using Firefox for a long time . I also use Mozilla Thunderbird email
client.

It's an add-on for Firefox that does cool stuff. You download them individually, so you can customize pretty much everything. For example, my browser displays the weather, blocks ads, and checks my email every 10 minutes automatically.
-
Firefox is the brower's that the closest of all to matching W3C standards, so yes... as a webdev, I'll beg y'all to use Firefox! Opera being the 2nd... I'm not sure about IE7, but if they do it like they have done previous versions...
Elfie: Extentions are like plugins. Most are user made (Make sure you only get certified ones from the mozilla website).

I use Opera and Firefox. Currently i use 9b Opera on both my mac and pc.

Stick with Opera unless you have a specific compatibility problem or you enjoy spending hours downloading and configuring extensions and other doodads.
-
ditto
-
Have been trading (for fun only) Opera shares for about a week now. Its been holding up pretty good even if the total market here has gone down with over 5% over the last few days due mostly to falling dollar and lower oil prices.
They are getting into several new phones and the new Nintendo console will have the Opera browser :)

Nah, You will have FireFox customized, up and running in some five-ten minutes.
-
Funked doesn't like expermumiments. Opera also has a nifty cache for pr0n...
-
Firefox is another tribute to the power of stupid people in large numbers ... kinda like windos.
Up and running in 5 minutes DOES NOT mean properly configured or properly secured.
The only reason I use Opera more than Firefox is simply because its faster.
It took weeks of tweaking to get it to look and feel like I wanted it, but at least I did not have to download, plug in, configure, start over, ad nauseam.
Not to mention that it works and looks exactly the same on windos, apple and OS/2.

Are you serious? Can OS/2 still be found on any "client" machine where there's a need for a modern browser?
I really miss OS/2. If only IBM spent $30M on marketing for OS/2 in 1994 (M$ spent $300M on Win95 marketing in 1995) - we could have a good stable OS years before Win2000 and w/o M$ "bells and whistles".

If only Microsoft had not been allowed to enforce license agreements with PC manufacturers so that even if the buyer wanted OS/2 installed, they still had to pay for a Windows license.
-
Funny thing is that I actually use Firefox more than Opera. I had some compatibility problems with Opera on a few particular sites which worked fine with Firefox, so I switched.
-
As i said.. i use both opera and firefox
I kinda like that our small country has a browser that is internationlay recognized. Maybe im using Opera out of nationlaist feelings, or perhaps its because i own shares in the company...or both
Ilike it. I hated it afew years ago because it was bloated, but now it is slick and fast.
:)
use it or dont... i knwo they make thir money know from embedded solutions and from getting their software into cellphones etc.
small company that has made it in an environent that is usually doninated by the huge.... i like it.
dont remember how much MS has lost in total with their IE browser, but it was a huge pile of $.
Opera is making money even if they only have a very few % of the total market
-
I had a lot of problems with Firefox logging into sites that need some of the ASP and ActiveX components (banking, 401k stuff, etc)
Until the companies I visit change over support for other browsers, I have to keep using IE
-
I just downloaded opera to give it a try. Gona be hard to swing me from firefox.
EDIT: 3 minutes into using it Im impressed.
EDIT AGAIN: Im in love. Firefox is now my #2 browser.
-
So which extensions should I go get?
-
I also like Flashblock. All flash anims are replaced by a Play button, cuts down on pretty much all of the other annoying ads. If you have Ad Block, get the Ad Block updater, it automatically updates the ad block definitions.
Gmail Manager is great too, my wife and I both have Gmail accounts and it makes it easy to switch back and forth. Also, it shows how many new messages I have in the bottom right of my browser, and I'm just one click away from reading 'em.
-

Actually we did, and we still do. ;) A couple million copy's still exist on client machines.
Drawback 1 is OS/2 is for work ... not many today, or then, would put up with a OS that you could not waste time playing games on. OTOH a OS/2 game won game of the year two years in a row ... any windos game ever do that?
But outside of games there was nothing in the apple/windos world that had better software than OS/2.
drawback 2 is OS/2 required you to know something, and or be able to read and follow instructions. It gave you the best lumber, hammer and nails ... but you had to know how to use them ... this required learning, something most were not about to attempt.
This has not changed any today ... Linux offers great promise ... but is a work in progress.
As long as Joe 6 pack continues to worship at the throne of the great god gates, and tilth mightily, they will reap the rewards of the dark ages forever.
Remember ... if you have ever flown on an airplane or used a ATM ... whatever your experience, it WAS NOT brought to you by Mickysoft. ;)
I find it amazing that we fly spacecraft beyond the solar system with a 5 meg dasdy and good code ... windos can't even balance your checkbook in under 300 meg ... what was that about stupid lazy people in large numbers? :D:D:D

Theres so many security holes in IE7 that even I can find them.

IE has something like 1,200+ known problems, which is why M$ releases a security "update" every three days. When IE 5 was due for release, M$ had to delay it by six months because of 100,000 known bugs!
Firefox has 24 or so, most of which will be slaughtered in the next release. Some daily builds have removed them all. That's right, a bulletproof browser.
As for extensions... AdBlock and Network Tweak are the only two I've got or ever use. With Adblock you can hit the little "adblock" text in the lower right and manually prevent anything from showing. I block doubleclick and akamai by default; simply stick "http://*.doubleclick.net/*" in the Block box. No more ads from the biggest propaganda site on the 'net. Flash can be selectively turned off, blocked completely, or you can only turn off one or two flash objects.
I've kept IE around only for the non-Firefox sites. When I first hit the 'net in '96 the first browser I downloaded was NS 4. Kept away from M$ crap ever since.

8.5 or 9b?

I didn't get Opera at some point because they were charging for it.
Been using Firefox for a couple years now. The only extensions I use are Adblock and a little hack that adds "open this link in IE" to the right-mouse click.
In the last year, the relative number of Firefox-incompatible/IE-only sites has seriously diminished.
And Adblock is awesome. Since I don't have that IE ActiveX BS, I don't have to go through those security popups every time a site has ads. But when activeX gets used for evil, I get to wield the sitewide ban. Take that floating text blocker!

And therein lies your false sense of security. How many unknown problems there are in Firefox is the bigger question. The recent cleanup of opensource code by the US Govt they discovered a lot of bugs, many critical. Oh and Firefox has a far more than 24 entries on the Cert vunerability knowledgebase, many of them still current vunerabilities.
Sure I think Microsoft are the evil empire too, but firefox is no bulletproof browser and those who tout as one are swimming in the big kids pool at the deep end.
