Ok Im not sure if this is possible, but would there be a program out there that can convert my avi movies into data? ... So then I could burn it onto a DV-R just like you would burn a CD? And watch it on a regular DVD player?

Windows Movie Maker should be able to. There are several others. Pinnacle Studio, Sony Vegas, and Adobe Premier Pro are popular.
There are other cheaper alternatives. The big difference between them all lies in the MPEG2 encoder. Some are better than others.
