Title: Hazing..an American tradition!
Post by: VOR on May 17, 2006, 10:28:54 AM
Recently had the honor of initiating a new Junior into the NCO ranks. Traditionally, there's a "ceremony" in which the seniors welcome him aboard and make sure he gets off to a good start. :D

Mud is hard to find over here, so we had to make a little. What's a ceremony without props? (Yours truly manning the ceremonial yellow bucket of dry sand.)

Before anyone asks, nobody was (or ever is) hurt. "Will" is a great guy, a good sport and a fine junior leader who will do great things in the years ahead. Way to go!

Where is the beer bong and sheep?  You just put mud on him?  Couldn't you at least have found some horse droppings?

Ah, yes.  Hazing.  It is too bad that high schools, colleges, fraternities, and most states now outlaw it.

(A) As used in this section, "hazing" means doing any act or coercing another, including the victim, to do any act of initiation into any student or other organization that causes or creates a substantial risk of causing mental or physical harm to any person.

(C)  Whoever violates this section is guilty of hazing, a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.

Unfortunately Ohio law does not differentiate between sadistic hazing and non-sadistic hazing.

It's unfortunate that those people who are hazed, are 75% more likely to feel part of the group and have a fun time in the group they are in.

The problem is when idiots make the hazing get out of hand.  But this applies to everything else also, so it's sad that hazing is the scapegoat.

hazing is just some gutless wonder lashing out at someone who he feels can't retaliate.

'getting even' for his own hazing by taking it out on someone who had nothing to do with it because he didn't have the guts to stand up to his own hazers.

organizations that have heavy hazing traditions set up a system where those at the top of the pecking order feel that the rules or even basic decency don't apply to them, those at the bottom are perpetual victims, and those in the middle kiss the bellybutton of those above them and vent their frustration on those below them.

if you let someone abuse you, you are a punk, even if they let you into their 'really cool club'.

I remember we used to have a fun tradition for new guys in the unit.

When you'd get in new troops that are boots they would have to get "Axe Qualed"  (axe qualification)

We'd take them out in the field to a tree stump.  We'd then place a quarter on it and then blindfold them.  We'd tell them all they had to do was at least nick the quater with a small axe while blind folded and they pass.  What they don't know is that we'd take something of theirs (usually their hat) and set it on the tree stump without them knowing.  The would whack away trying to hit that quater while we would cheer him on.  After a minute or two we'd tell him to "cease fire" and to remove the blind fold.  Good times were had by all.  :aok

Umm, they ask people from groups whether or not they have been hazed, and then whether or not they feel like they are part of the group.

That's as dumbed down as I can get it for you.

Hazing is all fun and games until somebody does something really hurtful and really stupid.

The Navy as pretty much banned hazing of any kind. The Shellback ceremonies of today are nothing compared to two or three decades ago. Same goes for the Chief initiations. Both we're allowed to continue after the official ban on hazing. The workaround was that these ceremonies were "voluntary".

I think they finally realized that the risk just wasn't worth the reward.

I remember hearing stories on the ship and even reading about a courts martial for a similar incident on another ship. The snipes (engine guys) had a little initiation of their own. They used to take a grease gun, insert it into the rectum of some noob and feel him full of grease.

Well, stupid acts like that are the reason "hazing" makes the news. Geez...that's beyond too far. That's torture.

We rolled our guy around in the mud for about 10 minutes then joined him. It's all about unity and cohesion.

Guns, from my days on tanks we had a similar ceremony known as sledgehammer qualification. Substitute a track pad for a tree stump. Good times. :D
