Title: Sink the Tirpitz!
Post by: Oldman731 on May 19, 2006, 08:06:27 AM
It should be up and working.

Please post bugs, and suggest modifications, here.  The setup is interesting, a bit unusual, and we might want to make adjustments here and there.

SINK THE TIRPITZ

The year is 1944.  The Western Allies' bloody effort to
move supplies to the Soviet Union along the Murmansk
gauntlet is in full swing.  Yet every officer in the
Admiralty, and every seaman and sailor on the ice-
coated ships, still fears the sudden appearance of
Germany's super battleship, "Tirpitz," which can
effortlessly sink an entire convoy if she chooses.
All attempts to sink her have thus far failed.  Now the
carriers HMS Formidable and HMS Emperor, assisted
by long-range Mosquitos and Lancasters, will try again.

Thanks to Storch for the research and effort in creating
this setup, which pits the American-built Corsairs and
Hellcats of the fleet against the Luftwaffe.

ALLIES (BISHOPS)

Land-based:  Lancaster
           Mosquito
           Spitfire Mark 8

Carrier-based:
Task Group 8:  F4U-1 Corsair
              SBD-5
                       TBM

Task Group 37: F6F-5
                        SBD-5
                        TBM

AXIS (ROOKS)

Bf-109G2
Bf-109G6
Bf-110G2
FW-190A5
Ju-88 at rear bases (A53-55, 57-58)

NOTES:

The Tirpitz is represented by the fleet running between
A42 and A43.  There are no planes on the carrier.

All ships are hardened to 125, the same setting as
towers and runways.  You will need to drop 125 1000-lb
bombs on a ship to sink it, and it will regenerate in
approximately one minute.

Many, if not most of the bases, are neutral Knight.  This
is NOT to simulate an actual neutral country, but rather
is to channel the action.  Some of these bases will
probably be changed as the setup progresses and we
learn more.

OTHER SETTINGS:

Radar is historical to 1944:
  Tower: 158,400
  Sector: 343,200
Planes flying under 500 feet will be under the radar's
    coverage.

Strat is disabled
Killshooter is OFF.  Do not shoot friendlies.
Friendly collisions are off (carrier operations are virtually
  impossible otherwise).
Fuel burn rate is 1.0
Visibility is 12 miles.
Ack settings are .25 for low-level ack, .1 for puffy ack.

Hey OM awriiiiiightttttttttt!!! I'm really looking forward to this and it should be fun.  Would it be possible to disable the rook bases west of the 12/13 longitude?  my reasoning is to prevent any porking of the few bish bases and to more easily facilitate FiLtH's upcoming and already sufficiently challenging bomber strike to sink the dread tirpitz.  I forgot about the spit8 I'm glad you guys remembered it.

WTG.

Now if I just had AH loaded at the office.:(
Add to the fact I have to run and see a customer 110 miles away, I won't even be able to sneak in a lunch time sortie.

Thanks OM:aok

Done.

Jaekart was in the arena testing it out, he clued me in that the MOTD had the blue plane fighters reversed from their actual placement.  MOTD has been changed to reflect this.

the thought just occurred to me that perhaps we should make one more base a bish base.  what about A41 as RN base for injured allieds to be able to recover and still land their kills.  no planes enabled only ack.

Did I read correctly?   125x  1000 lb bombs to sink a ship?!?

Little stiff there isn't it?

Let's not create an Iwo Jima just yet.  The Lancaster raids were long range missions.  A better question is:  can the Lancasters make it from their current bases?  I know nothing of bomber operations, and would be interested in the answer.

Would like to see some discussion of the merits of making the ships virtually indestructible, as they are now, versus a quick regeneration time so that they can be sunk over and over.

One of the down sides of the quick regeneration path is that I don't know where the fleets would come back on, but I'm pretty certain it would be far from where the action is.  With so few British fleets (the map only has three fleets total, one for each of the original three countries), this could effectively end combat for the evening.  It is not possible to make just one of the fleets sturdier than the others.

So:  for now they're indestructible.  We could try the other to see what happens, but let's see how this one bears up at first.

ja I agree quick regereation is better and maybe MA hardness.  but have the allied fleets respawn close to the fight

Funny you mentioned it. I just saw something on the History channel recently about RAF Bombers trying to take out the Tirpitz. They had to fly from somewhere in the Soviet Union to have the range. The first mission was basically a scrub because the Germans were able to hide the Tirpitz with a smoke screen. The RAF crews were told not to drop thier bombs unless they had a target. Ethier by accident or frustration one did drop his bomb. I can't remember if it was the Tall Boy or Grand Slam they used , but the guy got a lucky hit.

This caused the Kreigsmarine to move the Tirpitz to another fjord that was in range from bombers in the UK.

Not that this should have anything to do with the current setup. I just mentioned it because of the subject matter.

Her majestys Royal Air Force pounded that piece of German tin into spoons, just like they did with anything else the Germans built.
Watched a program on the telly about the lancs, they used the tall boy, they got there before the Germans could put up their bloody smoke screen and fighters, well done boys I say !

a few things that are annoying

1. when the dar is knocked out on the CVs the allieds are left blind
2. the allieds really need a land base closer to the fighting, I suggest making it an RN base allowing only Navy birds to fly from it.
3.  The tirpitz was sunk and it is no longer on the map.  CV49 is gone the way of the Dodo.

OM be advised. Me and Bear did a lanc run today on the Tirpitz.  I can't remember if Bear hit it or not but I hit the CV with 7 1000 (21 including 2 drones) and I sunk the CV. I also hit the CA with the other 7. The CA didnt sink. Are all ships set at the high value?  Are you sure on the damage it can take? Seemed to go down fairly easy.

As far as the fuel we took 50% and it was more than enough. 25% will be used in the mission for the Lancasters. This for better climb as well as added drama in case of battle damage.

In "object settings" I have ship hardness set at 125.  Can't find any other way to vary it, but I have fired up a flare for assistance from those more knowledgeable than I.

Proof would be good to have, a film clip (preferably) or a screenshot. But there's not much we can do if none of the staff are online at that time...

Have you had problems with killshooter off?

I don't want to say the name but his initials are joedog.  :D   now in all fairness people will get killed by friendlies if they jump in and attempt to steal a kill.  MA bad habits die hard.  on Friday BoxBoy did just that, he jumped in to steal a kill and instead of one kill I got two :rofl .  he then went off on a five minute rant on me near the end of which he threatened to shoot me down he said he was hunting for me, the problem was he should have been checking his six, because my reply was "not If I find you first"  then I tapped my trigger.  you should have seen the rant after that.  I've been killed by friendlies in ack guns, FW190 drivers clearing their 7.9s on the runway, squaddies trying to clear my six etc.  all in all I think the KS off is worth the bit of nuisence that occurs from time to time.  I'm sure JD killed you by accident plat.

Dangit Storch, stop teasing Boxboy lol.  :)  He's a good guy, he just has a temper.  You talk about it calmly now, but I've heard you lose your temper over similar things a time or two.  A good "storch rant" is a thing not to be missed.  lol
