This crap is getting way outta hand and has been accepted for far too long. Time to start locking these POS's up.
-
I agree. Dead links are the worst. :)
-
Looks like Cunningham will get a roommate.
-
Let me guess...
It's Democrat, eh? No? Yes?
Because there must be some reason why, after the wave corruption scandals that have been (and continue to be) plaguing the Republicans whilst leaving you completely mute, you would choose just this moment to speak up about it.... no?
-
Are you talkin' to me? Are YOU talkin' to ME?
-
No no.... Bodhi, and his new found outrage.

Hi Bodhi.. the link is not working. Can't see who got nailed, what the charges were or what it's all about.. do you have another link or a name?
thanks!

It's Jefferson, Democratic Congressman of Washington, for bribery, involving something to do with Nigeria (lol, if I get one more of those Nigerian scam emails I'm going to write to my local omnbudsman for redress).
At least I'm pretty sure....
Something tells me that Bodhi aint talking about Republicans Tobin, Reed, Cunningham, Abramoff, Libby, Delay, Fletcher, Lewis, Volz, and crap... where do I stop?

how about right after "Something.." :)
Just another reason for term limits ... once they get in and get the power, one way or another, it is impossible to get them out
By the time they get through with their competition, the challengers own mothers don't vote for them ....
-
I would be careful getting up on that high horse. The person you voted for is probably just as guilty of something. The only difference is, she/he has not gotten caught yet.
Term limits will not help and will exacerbate the problems with corruption and politicians not doing anything (other than taking money). Short term thinking never solves long term problems.
Who cares what party they are in. By default, they are crooked. They have to be in order to get where they are. We just would not have it any other way. We glorify the criminal. We put them up on pedestals. We idolize them. We pay them large amounts of money for the rights to thier story. We give them ungodly amounts of free press. We put them on television so they can tell use thier sad tale. We are entertained by them.
It must be true, as all the news channels make huge deals out of it. There is a reason for it.

I never understood the infatuation some have with the "Godfather" trilogy or "The Sopranos" thang. *ShruG*
But then .... I do kinda like Jesse James and "The Young Guns."
Go figure.
Three Stooge slap the entire hill.

Scuzzy, for someone that seems to believe that nothing can be done about the political situation anyways and that it's pointless to discuss it, you sure do post about it alot.
-
He's a disgruntled optimist like me. It's easy to spot. :)
-
Being from the New Orleans area, I'm glad they finally nailed that corrupt SOB. He's had his hand in the pot for a long time. Catch em' all...either side of the aisle.

I kinda doubt anybody has written more letters, made more calls and harrased more crooks in brooks brothers suits. He's entitled to to be disgusted.

Really? Pretty broad brush there.

Haven't seen a single 'honest' politician since Bob Dole.
You?

Bob Dole?
"Get outta here!" ;)

Skuzzy doesn't know these people personally and niether do you.
I'd bet there are just as many honest, well meaning elected officials as there are in any other job.
President Bush seems like a pretty honest guy to me, yet I don't "know" that to be true.
It's silly to make statements about people like Skuzzy has. It's not even rational.
-
my god... is possible that you are that gullible and naive? Nuke, sometimes I wonder if yer more than 14 years old.
-
Hmm...
Since we're askin'....
Has anyone got anything on Mark Warner, Wesley Clark, Bill Richardson, Al Gore or Russ Feingold?
If anyone's got the dirt, it's gonna be somebody here.
So?
-
Yea lets all raise a hissy fit about corruption in politics and then defend the concept of lobbyist. Does your congressman defend the idea of lobbyist?

They make me nauseous.
pardon me, i gotta go dump again.
-
Hmm...
Ya got nothin' then?
Come on.... there's gotta be something... right?
I mean, they are, afterall (how'd you phrase it?), "Liberal puzzies"....
...... and everyone knows that all politicians are corrupt....
So.... Whatcha got on them? Lets hear it.
-
While Hang considers it, let me ask who on the right are worthy.
Who?
-
jezzus grapefruit.. you gonna make me go dig in their closets?
oh, damn. I gotta take a dump again.
-
I'd actually like that, Hang.
It's one thing to call an entire swath of people "puzzies" based on their political leaning, and another thing to actually back that up.
It's one thing to call all politicians corrupt, and another thing to actually back that up.
I wanna see you do it. How hard can that be?
-
Hmmm...seems like I remember a little incident involving Al Gore, a speech to a group of Buddhist monks or some such, a paper bag containing hundreds of thousands of dollars that supposedly came from the Communist Chinese army or the government (Aren't they actually the same?) that had to be returned after the exchange was reported by the press. Seems like nothing was ever done about any of that...but my memory isn't what it used to be.
That's just off the top of my head. Some of you other guys will have to pitch in.
-
Sounds like a right interesting conspiracy blog theory. But it has me on pins and needles. I do indeed want to hear more about this one.
-
Anyone else notice that Nash is the first one in this thread to bring up the Red/Blue issue. No one else here cares if this guy is a democrat except for Nash. Most of us spoke out against cunningham and didn't even try/think about coming to his deffense. I only bring him up because he's (to my knowledge and I could be wrong.....I though I was wrong once before but I was just mistaken) the only elected official thus far to be convicted in this latest round of corruption investigation.
Dem or Repub if the guy has done something wrong they need to kick him out of office and throw him in jail for a VERY long time.....set the standard for all the other elected bozos in congress.

Yeah..Mark Warner was Governor of Virginia..That should be enough to disqualify anybody....what a **** hole this place is.
Of course he did play the "bait and switch" with the "Car tax" here too. but thats just normal politics.

Wow, the gung-ho high and mighty Republican morality police are coming out of the woodwork now... even though they've been ignoring it for, oh, the last 3 generations.
Who knew that it would take a Democrat gettin' busted to set off their alarm. Huge fricken suprise.

Didn't you hear?
Buddhist monks rugby-tossed a paper bag full of unmarked hundred dollar bills to Al Gore as he rushed to his plane.

no more caffine fer you tonight, nash.

Hey, if I were in your shoes, I'd be a Democrat.

100%.

Yeah, 100%, I'll grant you that.
100% curiosity that Gunslinger is expressing it now.

what high horse?
I think term limits is a step in the right direction - for both parties. The next is to restore the position back to public servant with its salary not to exceed that of the chief of police in the politicians district. I do not think they are all crooked and the ones that are probably didn't start out that way. The power amassed in their over stayed reign corrupts the majority of what it touches.
term limits with real life compensation packages <-including their retirement packages, while removing the ability to vote themselves raises - would change the face of our government for the better.

can we still burn the lobbists?

Whutsa a lobbist?

coupla ice cubes short of an abramoff.

No pressure or anything Hang, but whenever you're ready, I'd love to hear your take on Mark Warner, Wesley Clark, Bill Richardson, Al Gore and Russ Feingold.
Of course, they may be "puzzies", as far as you're concerned. I'm not sure how, but... I guess we'll just have to take your word on that?
And...... maybe they're corrupt?
I'm not sure how that is either....
But we'll only know after your thorough vetting system. I'm certainly waiting for the results of your investigation.
Spell it out.
Can anyone lend Hang a hand here? I'm sure he'd appreciate the help.
-
They're gun snatchin' baby killin democrats. And Gore is a loser.. how's his global warming crusade going, anyway?
Damn, now i gotta take a crap again. gawdamned feinsten fanclub liberal weenies chafe my bellybutton cheeks.
-
A cursory search of Richardson brings up the name Guy Riordan.Richardson appointed Riordan, who owns a commercial hunting ranch, to the state Gaming Commission. Riordan’s name came up in the federal corruption trial of former Treasurer Robert Vigil; Richardson promptly donated all previous contributions from Riordan to charity.
Then you have Gerald Peters who has majority ownership of Century Bank. The state Public Regulation Commission is considering changing a nearly $1 million-a-year contract with Century Bank because the bank is receiving a higher fee than allowed by state regulation. Peters is a "a significant campaign contributor to Gov. Bill Richardson".
There's also some concern that campaign contributions resulted in support for the "Railrunner" commuter railroad to the tune of about $300 million in governmental financing; it's projected to lose about $9 million the first year (90% loss).
Lastly, Richardson has "taken tens of thousands of dollars worth of free corporate jet flights from the world's largest smokeless-tobacco company in his role as head of the Democratic Governors Association. That company— UST, the parent corporation of the firm that makes Skoal, Copenhagen and other brands— lobbied hard at the New Mexico Legislature earlier this year for a tobacco-tax change that critics said would have exclusively benefited UST. The bill, sponsored by Richardson's chief legislative ally, House Speaker Ben Lujan, passed the House after a state financial impact report to lawmakers was drastically changed using UST's numbers."
Smoking gun? Nope.
A shining example.... maybe not. Might not want to put him on a pedestal just yet. Blankets start to unravel a few threads at a time.
Skuzzy may be right; just sayin'.
-
Gore? His "Chinese money laundering" goes back to his 1990 Senate race, before the '96 fiasco where about $50K was given by monks and nuns who had taken a vow of poverty, right?
Kinda makes Skuzzy look right; seems they all have a little "dirt" on their shoes.
-
Yeah reckoned as much.
I know yer only joking Hang....
But doesn't it say something to you when it's oh-so easy to blurt out some kind of..... nonsense...... in response to a simple question?
Democrats puzzies? Simple question.
How?
And Corrupt?
How?
That's all. Not hard. You got an answer?
Wanna ask me the same question about Republicans?
Wanna hear me talk about the 101st and Abrahmoff? I'll sure as hell have an answer for anyone with the patience to sit through it.
Don't call Democrats p*ssies unless you're serious.
-
I'd say that about anyone that supports excuses rather than accountability and responsibility.
Lots of those on both sides of the aisle anymore.
-
"both sides of the isle"..... garbage.
Clinton knew how to balance a budget. Okay?
This current party of "accountability" appearently doesn't know how to do that.
I'm so tired of this "both sides" crap.... because it isn't both sides.
If you read between the lines, the Republicans campaigned on a platform of "We don't know what the hell we are doing - but be afraid, be very afraid."
Ya know, it's crazy the kind of stuff y'all try to pawn off on us as just being reality, the way it was....
**** that. It was goobly-guck then, and it's the same now.... and we didn't eat it then, and we sure as hell aren't eating it now.

-
Thrawn, you are correct. I should keep my mouth shut. Every once in a while I try to test the waters. In general, I so stay out of these things, but not always. It is not good to allow your own mind to fester on internal topics which bother you. So I do a reality check.
Eagler, the "high horse" comment was not directed at you. It was a general comment.
Eagler, I see "term limits" as a bandaid. It does not address the actual problem, but attempts to patch it up. The problem with band-aids, is you can only have so many before they just wiil not stay in place any longer.
The real problem you want to address are the people who continually put the same people into office. Forcing someone not to run only forces people to vote for somone who could be worse (and by the looks of things, that is getting to be a high percentage bet).
It has been said, time and time again, "an honest person (used to be man,..) could never win an election". Truer words have never been spoken. But why is it true (assuming you believe it, and I do)? It's certainly not the fault of the people who run. It all goes back to us. The people who pull the lever and cast the vote. We do not want honesty. We want to be lied to. We want to see the world through rose-colored glasses. We want to pretend everything is hunky dory.
We also need a scapegoat. Someone we can blame for the problems we have. Hard to blame an honest person. Easy to blame a corrupt, morally bankrupt, slime-ball.
Of course, there is another side of that coin. The politician who just might try to make a difference. Guess what? He/She can't. Why? Well, all the rest of his/her compatriots will do everything they can to make sure the 'honest' guy/gal gets nowhere. Thus, in the next election we will boot him/her out in favor of the crook.
We are led to the shearing like sheep. Once stripped of our coat, we complain, but come next election, we will do it all over again. We like the food they feed us. It is easier to swallow, than changing to another brand/type of feed. Baaaaaaa. Hear me roar.

Their Democrats what more of a reason do you need? By nature Democrats are lying theiving weazels and should never be more than entertainers. Repubs aren't much better but at least you can trust them with your kids.
-
I wouldn't trust any of them with kids, mine or anyone elses.
I'm with skuzzy. Mute, kick, and ban the whole lot of them. Allow 20% chosen by their peers as "key leadership" to serve either a set extended period or indefinately (as long as they are re-elected that is), but boot the other 80% at 2 terms. Any hint of corruption not dealt with by those who elected the corrupt ones, and the outgoing congressmen who have nothing to lose could give the corrupt ones in the extended term crew the big boot.
Maybe people would actually take part in politics if they thought it mattered, and with that much turnover it DEFINATELY would matter. More people would get a chance to serve and try to make a difference.

Clinton knew how to balance a budget. Okay?
Nice dodge; you hold up a few paragons of Democratic sanctity and integrity and a cursory seach turns up mud on their shoes.
Richardson might be clean, you never know. But I'll bet if he runs for Prez there will be closer inspection of those items mentioned. Some of them seem dubious at best.
Gore? Taking $50k from "vow of poverty" monks and nuns in violation of campaign laws. Guilt? The Federal Election Commission imposed a record-setting $719,000 in fines against participants in the 1996 Democratic Party fundraising scandals involving contributions from China, Korea and other foreign sources.
But now you want to shift the discussion to "balancing the budget" ROFLMAO! Yeah, I bet you DO! It always helps to try and control the definitions used and the scope of the argument. Nice try.
Again, however, you need a refresher course in American politics. First of all, it is CONGRESS that holds the pursestrings. The President proposes (a budget), the Congress disposes (the money) and the Supreme Court rules (on legalities).
With that in mind, let me remind you of a few things about (mmppfftt) "Clinton balancing the budget".
First, the Republicans took over control of Congress in 1994. Their "Contract With America" helped put them over the top and included the FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT, a balanced budget/tax limitation amendment. That was a Congressional Republican initiative and Clinton had nothing to do with it.
This led to a push for a balanced budget and President Clinton, working with a REPUBLICAN Congress reduced the deficit. Major economic growth and spending controls such as welfare reform, favored by both the President and Republican Congress allowed for a balanced budget (when the Social Security surplus was counted as revenue) by early in Clinton's second term - considerably earlier than what Clinton's own projections for this had indicated and, afterwards, a surplus which actually allowed the retirement of some government debt.
Here's the key part: despite the nominal surplus, the national debt grew each year of the Clinton presidency since the surplus is not applied against spending in this calculation.
So "Clinton balanced the budget" is more Nash revisionism. Congress approves budgets and it was a Republican Congress that had a "Contract with America" to reduce the budget. Clinton was along for the ride.

Nash, I suppose you are speaking of the great Al Gore, former vice president and sainted environmentalist, the guy with the unlicensed garbage dump on his farm near Carthage Tennessee. A true paragon of saints. The guy who filed his taxes showing a generous $400 or so given to charity, whilst accusing Cheney of stealing from the poor to give to the rich, despite showing charitable donations exceeding $1M.

Ouch.^^ That had to have left a mark, Nash. :)

Well, hang of the 10 items in the CWA were approved by the House — the constitutional amendment to limit congressional terms being the lone exception — and sent to the Senate for further action.
As Gingrich and others have pointed out every legislative element of the contract that was not a constitutional amendment eventually became law in some fashion.
So, they at least did what they said they were going to do.
There will always be arguments over the results, of course.

Sorry to start this and abandon it, but been out of the house with limited Iternet access. Anyways, it was Jefferson I was refering to, and it was not because of his party affiliation, but because he is a corrupt jack arse who deserves to be locked up as should any other corrupt person in political office after they find him guilty in a court of law. Sadly, the guy will make a deal and probably not even lose his seat.
Nash, you say I have "new found concern"? My concern and morality has always been there. Just because you feel that you have to attempt discredit (with false accusations) whatever someone else says to make your point does not change that.
-
Yup.. the flake needs to be tried, i hope like hell he gets convicted.
The uproar over the congressional office search is kinda crazy though. I'm not sure how I feel about the 'administration' using 'police powers' to search a 'congressional office'.
In an unrelated story: Beakins Van lines and Movers have reported a spike in quote requests for moving 'boxes' in the DC loop... ;)
-
I have no problems with them searching an office if there is a legitimate belief that a crime has been committed and they get a proper warrant. But, if they do not find a crime and it is determined to be excessive use of police powers, then the one's instigating said search deserve to be tried for improper search.

How about alittle more corruption to brighten yer day?
http://www.newsobserver.com/1179/story/442540.html
house speaker Jim Black (D) is an optomitrist by trade:
It's true that the way House Speaker Jim Black birthed the bill smells worse than eight-day old chitlins. He slipped it into the state budget bill and accepted checks with the payee information left blank from optometrists who stand to benefit financially from it. Those contributions are now being investigated by the State Board of Elections.
His son is in the pest control business, so he manages to control the State committee that oversees that industry:
Since becoming House speaker, Jim Black has taken a strong, pro-industry interest in the state committee that regulates his son's pest control business.
The Structural Pest Control Committee, one of more than 400 state boards, regulates exterminators and products used to kill termites. It has tremendous power over the livelihood of Black's son, Jon Black, who owns Black Pest Control, an extermination business in Charlotte passed on to him by his father.
He's connected heavily in the gaming industry, and spearheaded starting a state lottery, turns out he's in bed with the company that won the bid.
The indictment of former lottery commissioner Kevin L. Geddings of Charlotte describes contacts he made in recent years with top Democrats in the state -- including Gov. Mike Easley, Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand, and a key aide to House Speaker Jim Black -- while working for a lottery vendor.
