Post by: cav58d on May 22, 2006, 05:58:35 PM
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat - Long Island Victory Lap

On June 15th, mid morning, two Grumman designed and built F-14 Tomcat fighters will fly over Calverton where they were built, Bethpage, where they were designed and then land at Republic Airport where they will taxi up to the American Airpower Museum for public inspection. A museum donation will be requested at the gate.

In the next Air & Space Magazine there is going to be a large tribute to the F-14.

I'm taking my father-in law and his buddies to the dinner Friday. He worked at the Ironworks for 32 years. He's a little miffed they are landing at Republic. Seems that's 'enemy territory'. (Republic is the home of the Thunderbolt and the A-10) Hangin around with these old duffers is a hoot. They call me 'kid' and relish  busting my chops about anything... and everything. :) Ferocious old bastards. Easy to understand why the planes and spaceships they built became legends.

since you said long island i am guessing NY, but on theor site i can not find a single mention to anything resembeling a major city or state that they are located in. :huh

all they say over and ovewr:

Republic Airport, 1230 New Highway, (south of Conklin Avenue), Farmingdale

farmingdale turns up in NJ NY and Maine in google but what a pain in the bellybutton to have to try and figure it out yourself.

LOL!

yah, it's NY.. but old timers here consider Long Island to be 'different'.

It ain't.

BTW, Republic Airport is about 50 miles east of NYC. Just north of the Southern State Parkway. Exit at route 110 North.

I found out about it a while ago from tomcatalley.com or actually tomcat-sunset.org. I didnt mention it to rob yet. Maybe he'd want to go, not sure. I've been too busy lately to get a chance to ask or mention it to anyone really yet. But one way or another im there. If I have to row across the sound in a spare tire, im going.

If you are going i'll hop in with ya, that'd be great. Like I said, one way or another, I'm going. Already took the day off.:D

Its gonna be a blast...this will actually be my first time seeing "The big fighter" in person...  Cant believe I blew off Quonset in 03 and 04 because I was hung over and missed the only shots I prolly ever had at seeing a cat demo....If by any slight chance the cat does one final performance at OCEANA this year I will 100% be down there...

I hope we get some high speed passes before landing..im sure we will

Sad...Most of em are being cut up here at NAS Oceana by a Texas based scrap metal company called RAM Metals. As soon as one is decommed they tow it across the airfield and destroy it. I salvaged a few pieces..mainly some lights and pitot tubes..most everything else was damaged beyond recognition. Maybe I'll go over there and get some pics of the HORROR!

No kidding. I dont want to see them.

Some of them, B and D models are not being scraped and being kept at ready status in that god awful place called the bone yard. I still cant belive that the Govt' wasted all of the money on the D's and then canned it. LOL stupid fools. Gay F18's.

A cool little side note. I have heard that a F22 wing/wings , not sure, are at NAS Oceana stationed there while their base/runways are being fixed from the hurricane this past year.

I'd love to see the F22's and Tomcats mix it up. Both in BVR and WVR. "Buffalo" Pwn. :)

Although I only saw a very limited demo of the F-22 last weekend I would have to say from what I saw, that the raptor would kick a tomcats arse in a knife fight....

I agree. And I've never seen one go through the paces IRL. The guys who fly the Tomcats, agree too Cav.

I Know Langley's runways will be closed for repairs...don't know where the F-22's are going..not alot of spare room at Oceana..When the decommed the 14's those squads transitioned to the 18E/F so it's not like there's alot of empty hangar/tarmac space

Not just a knife-fight, pretty much any engaement. The 14s phoenix would be nearly useless, even if he saw enough of a blip to launch one, from that point on the Tomcat is in pure PWNage. There is a reason they're being decommed ya know. I'm sure the 15/16 and eventually the 18 are not far behind.

Yah.. but now... a hornet somewhere has the security of the fleet in it's trust.

The navy screwed the pooch this time.

F22 and F14 is apples to oranges really.

The F18 and F-14 is another story.

There' aren't just a bunch of A modle cats sitting out there with ripped seats and fading paint jobs with 30 yr old 1000 lb missles doing nothing.

With the money that they put into the D's, you'd think they'd atleast stick with it a little longer.

And the F18 is half the plane the cat is in almost every aspect.

i saw the f-22 last summer..INSANEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE E

I can now understand why people report UFOS..when they see our Military jets flying..

That raptor was haullln balls..started to make a banked turn..a split second later..it was flying the other way..

amazing agility..
i was stoked..

Then a b-2 bomber did a half barrel roll....right after takeoff....looked at the crowd..then flew away

bah..then the f-117 flew thru..not very good at airshows..looks very stange ..but not many manuevers
