always fun. MT Im impressed with your choice of Yessongs. So many great moments on that album(s)....
I would have to put Cheap Tricks self titled debut album on there. Thats some great rock and roll. And the Cars first album was a wonderful piece of work.

Ya know, I always preferred Yesshows over Yessongs mainly because of The Gates of Delirium and Ritual. Doesn't get any better than that.

Not a jerk, just misinformed. Old Genesis with Peter Gabriel at the controls was one of the greatest rock bands ever. Their later incarnation was just crappy pop.

Peter's solo stuff is better than his stuff with Genesis IMHO. But I do like Trespass, Selling England By The Pound and L.L.D.O.B.

Personally, I like Disraeli Gears better than Wheels of Fire. :)

I'm not a big "album" guy. I usually like a few songs, but not a whole album.
I believe that the music one gets hooked on when they are young ( 14-19 or so) will end up being the music that they will always regard as their favorite type of music.
That being said, I think the White Album is one of my favorites. When I first heard it, I was about 16 and was used to hearing the Beatle's "pop" songs.
The White Album sounded like a different band to me, and I started to be amazed at the talent they had. I picked up a guitar and taught myself Julia, Mother Nature's Son, Blackbird. I started singing and trying to emulate the double tracked vocals like the Beatle's had on the White Album.
I really just love music. I couldn't list a top ten if I tried.
-
GoD is teh awesom live. The thing I like about Yessongs is that they were so good musically at such a young age. By the time they got to Yesshows they were seasoned mature professionals, and it shows. Now contrast both Yessongs and Yesshows with an Evening at Tsongas.....in the twilight of their careers they are still so capable of incredible performances.
I would sure like to see them again.....

Dark Side of the Moon.
15 years on the top 100, can't go wrong.

It can not be limited to 10. It must be 13 which would be all of Yanni’s albums:
Ethnicity
If I Could Tell
Tribute
Acropolis
In My Time
Dare to Dream
Celebration
Reflections
Niki Nana
Cameleon
Out of Silence
Imagination
Optimystique

It's weird to me how, whenever a thread like this appears, the preponderance of the albums listed were made sometime in the 70's or just prior. It's as if music suddenly ceased to be when Reagan was sworn in or something.
That was a heck of a long time ago...
Anyways, despite there being tons of great albums made in those days, I thought I'd freshen the typical list up a bit. Here are my top tentwenty.
The Clash: Sandanista
The Smiths: Strangeways, Here We Come
Replacements: Pleased to Meet Me
Elvis Costello: Get Happy
R.E.M.: Murmer
Pixies: Doolittle
Guided by Voices: Bee Thousand
Radiohead: OK Computer
The Flaming Lips: The Soft Bulletin
Pavement: Slanted & Enchanted
Nirvana: Nevermind
Liz Phair: Exile in Guyville
Weezer: Weezer
Wilco: Being There
M.I.A.: Arular
White Stripes: Elephant
New Pornographers: Electric Version
The Strokes: Is this it?
Gorillaz: Demon Days
Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights
The Distillers: Coral Fang
Arcade Fire: Funeral
-
Nash, does my theory apply to you?
-
Which theory is that?
-
"I believe that the music one gets hooked on when they are young ( 14-19 or so) will end up being the music that they will always regard as their favorite type of music"
-
Oh. Not really...
When I was four I was crazy about Jim Croce. When I was 7 it was Elton John's Captain Fantastic. When I was 8 it was all about the Bay City Rollers... (lol).... then it was E.L.O.... heh. And, etc.
I don't think there's too much commonality between these guys and my top ten now. In fact, if you take one album from my list and put it beside another album on my list that you think it most closely resembles, they are still going to be two albums wildly dissimular.
So no, I don't think it applies.
I too have a theory, though.... and that is when people stop growing, they start dying. It's true of the physical self, yes, but also true of the mental or spiritual self.
These top ten lists are a sort of an x-ray of that process as far as I'm concerned.
-
I like music. I like new music.
I was just saying that I beleive that the music one gets into from the ages 14-19 will end up being regarded as the person's "favorite" music when they look back and are asked to list as their favorite music or albums.
Think about the music you like the most as you look back, and I'll bet the music you regard with the fondest memories and the music you regard as your "favorite" is the music you got hooked on between the ages of 14-19.

Like I said, Nuke, it doesn't apply. At least to me.
Of the albums I listed, only 3 or 4 were made when I was 14-19.

I didn't say when they were made, just the age you were when you got into them.

lol.... okay.
I'm saying no.
I'm not saying that your theory is bad, but just that it is bad in relation to my personal experience.
-
Scorpions---Love at First Sting
Metallica- Master of Puppets/Ride the Lightning
Yes- Fragile
Beatles-White Album
Triumph--Thunder Seven
Night Ranger-- Midnight Madness
Led Zepplin-- IV
Del Leppard--Pyromainia
Rush--2112
Queen--Live Killers

Maybe my theory *is* wrong though.
I guess it's more accurate to speculate that music and events in one's life combine to form a strong connection between these events and what you percieve to be your favorite music.
Of course, I'm just blabbering.....;)
-
I know what you're getting at.....
And this thread's lists would certainly tend to back your theory up.
When I was 14-19, I was totally into 80's type music... .... because that was the music that was playing when I was 14-19.
But none of that crap is on my list. I don't look fondly on it.
However, you do see guys walking around in Members Only jackets:

.....and for them, I think your theory applies.

After 30+ years of listening to the admittedly great but same old rock and roll, I discovered Groove Salad;

Best enjoyed at 128kbps, with the subwoofer at max gain.

LOL @ the jacket :D
When I was 14-19, I was listening to stuff that was not on the radio mostly.
I'm 41, so the 80's are a kinda transitional era for me. From youth to old, lol.
The 80's pretty much sucked, but there were still a lot of great songs. Lots more garbage though.
I liked a lot of the early to mid '90's stuff.
Now I find myself listening to more country than anything.

The Clash - Sandanista (1980)
The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come (1987)
Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me (1987)
R.E.M. - Murmur (1983)
Pixies - Doolittle (1989)
Dude, I'd say you were all up into that "80s" scene, man.
Fables of the Reconstruction or Life's Rich Pageant for me.
-
Both of those albums could easily displace 'Murmer' for me and I'd be fine with it. I listed 'Murmer' only because it seemed to be seminal... the start of something for them.
Regarding the albums I listed that were made in the eighties, do you really think they were of the "eighties scene?"
I'm thinkin' more like Duran Duran, Boy George, Twisted Sister, world singer Bon Jonvie, G 'n ****in' R, Poison, Depeche Mode and Cindy Lauper.
Somehow I think The Clash, The Smiths, Replacements, R.E.M. and the Pixies.... (5 albums out of twenty listed)...does not constitute being "all up into that "80s" scene, man."
YMMV.

No no, you said "80s type music". I think those bands definitely fall into the 80's college music scene. Nothing like those bands now, or very little similarity.
And it's Murmur. Drop the "e". Stipe would.
-
Wow.... you wanna play semantics?
I actually listed twenty-two albums... and only five of those were of the eighties.
What exactly are you trying so hard to pin on me?
-
Well, not so much trying to "pin" anything. Just highlighting the fact about you saying you weren't into that "80's type music" but yet some of the picks you chose are definately in the 80's-era music. What you may consider "80's type music" may be different than others. To me, I agree with the G'n'R, Poison, Depeche Mode, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, etc...are in that vein but to me "80's type music" can cover a whole range of musical styles, not just hair bands but also the college music scene that came to fruition at that time.
Also, it's really easy to get you going on here and, honestly, it's quite fun to see how you react. Besides, this thread was getting stale.
I was suprised to see you didn't have any U2 on your list? Not a fan or just didn't register when you were making your list?
-
U2 is a little bit formulaic.
It's not as if the bands on my list aren't sometimes guilty of the same thing, but if you had asked me about U2 twenty years ago, I'd say that they were amazing. It's just that in retrospect, despite (nice) blips like Zooropa or Achtung Baby, I don't see much there. The drumming is bad, and The Edge is certainly one of the most stiff, unchanging, challenged and delay dependant guitarists I've ever seen. On the whole, they've managed to come up with some very good music. Just not on my list.
-
Well, that's the old double-edged sword innit? They suck if they don't change or they suck because they changed.
As for The Edge yes he's dependant on that delay-reverb drenched sound but that's him right? Imagine if B.B. King decided to change his style. I'll give the The Edge a ton of credit, like Johnny Marr, he's turned minimal guitar playing into something truly unique.

I'm 100% American born, and I'm sure if I tried to rank my favorite albums, they'd mostly be British (e.g. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Cream.)
Wait... I watch Doctor Who. I like and watch football (the round variety!) Newcastle Brown is my favorite beer. Maybe I secretly want to be British??? :huh
-
I think Nuke is sorta right. It isn't about age so much as the time in your life when music started meaning something to you. But near enough.
I had the pleasure of a college roommate who was the best guitar player in the dorm... (it was a very big school). People would congregate at our room for jam sessions and to play new music or whatever. Left to my own devices I probably would have never heard one tenth the music I was exposed to in those days. It was wonderful.
And as a side benefit the chicks were plentiful.
-
These albums are missing from your top ten.
Undertow
Aenima
Salival
Lateralus
10,000 Days
And for those who don’t know, the artist is: TOOL
-
in no particular order:
Ten
Siamese Dream
Seasons in the Abyss
Physical Graffiti
Weezer
Rust in Peace
Resolver
Gish

Led Zeppelin I
sort of rock:
Whatever and Ever Amen

Kick

These threads always seem to turn into a kluge of a band's uniqueness when the album is released, obscurity, popularity and so forth. It's more remember what your favorite was than what your favorites are. Memories can be so deceiving.
I'd expect to see "Under a Blood Red Sky" or "October" on the list before "Joshua Tree" because those two are supposed to be on the list. Under a Blood Red Sky had an excellent tin-ness to it and was just raw. October was U2's breakout album. But, if I look at what music I like best from U2, Joshua Tree definately captures it. I could still listen to that album front to back and not think "they were great back then". It's still good.
Rush is another one that you get the odd distribution for. I'll see people go right to the 2112 card (I guess because it's easy to remember) or go for the more obscure Hemispheres or Farewell to Kings stuff. Even the occassional "Rush - Rush" refference. I personally think their early live stuff blew all of that away. All the World's a Stage and Exit Stage Left were my absolute favorite albums from them. They always seemed so anticeptic on their studio albums.
I do get a chuckle reading through this stuff and do wonder how much is posted out of prefference and how much is posted for show.

for me i actually spent about 1/2 hour on the albums i listed.
i did the whole thing where i even looked up the album on amazon and read the tracks in case i forgot something.
each of the albums has a Maximum of 1 so-so song, otherwise the entire album had to be something i like. examples would be on siamese dream i have never liked "quiet" but the rest of the album is genius. seasons, i dont like skeletons of society. on Vs. i dont like w.m.a.
i dont know about the rest but i definately took the time and put thought into my list.
just realised i have to add Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly to my list too.

In no particular order..
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Led Zepplin- (cant remember name..one with old guy carrying sticks)
Aerosmith- Dream On album
Lynyrd Skynyrd- Pronounced
Metallica- Justice
Anthrax- Among the Living
Slayer- South of Heaven
Sepultura- Beneath the Remains
ACDC - Back in Black
Deep Purple - Machinehead

That's because technically, it has no name. The symbols are the name, but most refer to it as Led Zeppelin IV. :) Fantastic album. I find it hard to rank the Zep albums, as I really love them all.

These 2 albums have been important in history of music and haven't been mentioned here:
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Soft Machine - Third

Kinda tough to really nail it down cause it changes over time in my opinion anyway. What I thought was great when I was in High School back in the 70s isn't the same as what I'd say now.
Having kids changed it too. Getting my son to play guitar also involved feeding him things like the old Blues players like along with SRV, Jeff Beck, Clapton and the like.
That's the beauty of it.
Of course I can connect certain sounds to different times. I'll hear a song and it will remind me of a certain event going back as far as my little kid days.
I had no time for AC/DC first time around, but my son really loved them and I grew to appreciate their stuff. In the 70s we got absolutely saturated with Led Zeppelin to the point I couldn't stand them. Again my son really loving their stuff made me take another listen.
Maybe the tougher question is what album would you pick if you were stuck with only one for the rest of your days to listen to, not that I could decide that one at the moment.
Marvin Gaye's "What's going on." is the one in the CD player in the car at the moment so I guess that's up there right now.

I'll take it you are a U2 fan..If you were you would of mentioned U2's "War" LP...It was sorta an Eighties "Who's Next"
The "2112 Card" was Rush's breakthrough LP..Their record label was about to drop them..So they did this recording "their way"...Nothing to lose..Instant classic..
Early live Rush is not "Exit Stage Left"..It is "All The World's a Stage" & the even better "Live At The Odeon" "Different Stages" bonus CD ...
Why don't u post ur "Top 10"..?

Exit Stage Left and All the World's a Stage were the first two live albums.. .right?
They did a few compilations, but they always try to insert 2112 even though Geddy can't hit the high notes any more. It's not bad, but it's just not as good.
I don't have a top 10 albums list. Not by any means. I think these lists are a farce and more enjoy the posturing people take while presenting theirs. I'm not trying to argue that Joshua Tree is the best U2 album, I'm saying I like it best.
When these threads start up you see the exact same things posted as if there's only 10 different sets of tunes to put up here. There's those that feel obligated to post the classics, those that insist that true classic connesours always love a different album from the band that had one of the classic's listed in another thread (Pink Floyd - Animals... if you said "Dark Side of the Moon" or "The Wall" you're uneducated) and the guys that have to pick decent, yet incredibly obscure bands while trying not to come off like they're just doing it to prove how they're really into music and then the guys that just pick the albums they like.
It's more fun to sit back and watch. I chuckle at how different my oppinions on the subject are when I see Sgt Pepper's listed... as I think it's probably the 4th best Beatles album. There's a bunch of others that I chuckle at too, but it's not that I know more about music, it's that my tastes are so drastically different.
Inevitably, these threads always turn into a competition of sorts.
