Nukes? That's probably not a good idea.
-
timelapsed photography is soo neat.
-
I'm getting strange mental images of Hangtime, the Minuteman, and the movie Dr. Strangelove :p
-
The only problem with that is nukes are sooo indiscriminate.

so is anthrax & small pox - probably our next middle eastern treat.
Problem with us nuking 1st, the rest of the world we be able to say "the US did it 1st" as they let em fly...we have enough conventional weapons to smash anyone and anything to kingdom come. Just need to put all the politically correct toejame in the closet while we wage a war as it is supposed to be waged.

Lets play "What If"....what if a terrorist uses a suitcase nuke, say, in the Sears tower, top floor for maximum damage to the city...and we find out that it leads back to (Iraq,Iran,Somolia,)? Then do we play with nukes?

Yep, as long as we aint't first. Hell it don't even have to detonate, if they find one and it points anywhere overseas, I say it warrants wiping out the gov's of Iran and Iraq and any other known terrorists backing slimballs. I think we could have this terrorist issue under control in about a week once we did that.

I was watching the news lastnight and they were talking about the underground caves and how USAF attacks couldnt penetrate and I couldnt help thinking about some underground nuclear blast tests. In the name of science of course.

Eagler, I assure you that I am the most politically incorrect person on this bbs, at least I am in the race.
I can also say this and believe it to be a true as it can be, barring any change in policy. The USA will not use a tactical or strategic nuclear weapon in operation Enduring Freedom. Even if we are attacked by one of the "nuclear weapons" that we believe may be held by terrorist. Those weapons do not provide a high yield, more of a dirty yield. While it would be dispicable and definately takes this war to a new level, I seriously doubt the USA will retaliate in kind, or use a tact or strat nuke.
My reasoning is this. We are at war with the terrorist organization(s). We are even sending food along with destruction to prove it. The terrorist are at war with the "western world" They have no problem killing western non-combabtents, to them it is glory to "their god". To different objectives all together.
Just the way I see it.

There is no problem in the world that cannot be solved by high explosives. The only question is the amount and location.
EOD EOD EOD!

Ammo you are right of course. But I think it might be time soon to make an example. I.e. if a country supports people who do certain things to the USA, this is what happens to that country: glass parking lot. I think it might "encourage" some of these countries to "rethink" their policies regarding terrorism.
I want to see people marching in the streets of Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, etc. Not saying "Death to America!", but "America Please Don't Vaporize Our Worthless Asses!"

nukes proberly will not work in Afganistan, well they would, but they worn't get the ppl who u want to kill, as those chicken toejam terrorists hide in caves, which are like underground bunkers.
so,don't use nukes, use biological weapons!! yeah!! good thing about germs is they get carried thru the caves, and can be made so the germs die after a while :)

We have a nuke capable of penetrating harded surfaces up to 250 feet, after detonation, everything 2 miles downs and 5 miles in circumference collapses below ground level, the shock wave kills everything that is breathing. The fallout yeild is very low except in the immediate area of the explosion and the debris cloud that forms, which, depending on the wind conditions, it nominal. Above ground, only about 1/2 mile circum. is destroyed.
Edit: This nuke was once used to experiment with the peaceful use of mining with nukes. The DoD shelved the product but kept several varieties of this type of weapon in inventory.

People who say : "Nuke them", definitly never saw the results of a nuclear attack.
Funked, no offense but it's too primitive. Nuke is the easy answer. It's like punching a guy in a bar because you are unable to explain your thoughts... kind of like :"where the spirit stops, the insults start".
People who wishes Nuke, also have a very poor geo-political situation awarness.

More on my previous post:
Basically, they took the nuke below (The one below was inserted, not delivered), part of "Operation Plowshare" and refined it with a penetrating warhead after it was found after the Gulf war that some of our highly touted conventional deep penatrating weapons were failing to do a significant job below ground.
Of course, alot of this is hearsay from sources I have at McChord AFB, friends at some very senior levels, and off the record (Beer and chips, Sunday football :))
Sedan was one of the most spectacular nuclear test ever fired in the continental U.S. It was an LRL test conducted under the auspices of the Plowshare
program, which was an attempt to develop non-military uses for nuclear explosives. The purpose of Sedan was to investigate the potential of "clean"
thermonuclear devices for producing large craters cheaply (for canal or harbor construction for example).
Up to a point, the more deeply buried an explosive charge is, the larger the crater it will make. Beyond this point much of the material is thrown with
insufficient force to clear the crater and falls back in, reducing the final size. At the optimal crater depth though quite a lot of material actually ends up back in
the crater bottom. This is an advantage for a Plowshare-type crater experiment since much of the radioactivity gets returned to the crater and buried. The
radiation release (as measured in terms of I-131, the most important from human health risks) was 880,000 curies, about equivalent to a 3-4 kt atmospheric
fission test.
Sedan was detonated at what was estimated to be the optimal crater depth in alluvial soil. 12 million tons of soil and rock were lifted into the air, 8 million
tons of it falling outside the crater. The final crater was 1280 feet wide and 320 feet deep. The force of the detonation released seismic energy equivalent to
an earthquake magnitude of 4.75 on the Richter Scale. The device used was similar to that used in Dominic Bluestone and Swanee and was thus a variant of
the W-56 high yield missile warhead. The device had a fusion yield of 70%. The Sedan device had a diameter of 17.1 inches, a length of 38 inches, and a
weight of 467.9 lb.

Interesting. My view is that a nuke is a poor choice of weapon for this situation.
This is not the time for "to whom it may concern weapons." Way too much overkill. And worse, it would spawn a thousand more Bin Ladens who believe that they have orders from God.
We should kill Bin Laden in the field and get his head on a stick. We should commit large sums of money for this, pretty much what Bush is doing now. We will have to do this from now on... for every known terrorist.
In a sense, this is a battle for hearts and minds. We should get real personal about it, not generalize, which plays into terrorist strategy. Getting personal seemed to work with Momar Kadaffe. (sp)
If you get the terrorists right by the balls, the hearts and minds will follow.

LOL Verm.. I might as well take out Baghdad and Tehran; theyre right on the way.
Now look boys. I ain't much of a ham at makin' speeches. But I got a pretty fair idea that somethin' doggoned important's going on back there. And I got a fair idea of the kind of personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin'. Heck, I reckon you wouldn't even be human beins if you didn't have some pretty strong personal feelings about nuclear combat. But I want you to remember one thing - the folks back home is a countin' on ya, and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. Tell ya somethin' else - this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions an' personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for every last one of ya, regardless of your race, color, or your creed. Now, let's get this thing on the hump. We got some flyin' to do.
Hehehhe... the thought of James Earl Jones's HUGE white eyes between his oxygen mask and blast shield during that speach still cracks me up.
Now, boys, we got three engines out; we got more holes in us than a horse trader's mule; the radio's gone and we're leakin' fuel, and if we's flying any lower, why, we'd need sleigh bells on this thing. But we got one little budge on them Rooskies, at this height, why, they might harpoon us but they dang sure ain't gonna spot us on no radar screen.
Whotta great movie. :D

Funniest damn movie I ever saw, Hang. Nothing will ever come close!

another good thing about germs,is that they r slow attacking, give the bastards pain!!

Oooo funkedup - lets run the Osama test:
"But I think it might be time soon to make an example. i.e. if a country supports people who do certain things to the Islamic faithful, this is what happens to that country: glass parking lot. I think it might "encourage" some of these countries to "rethink" their policies regarding the Middle East."
Yup simply change 4 words (the victim & objective) and he sounds like a Islamic terrorist! :D
