Title: Steel Targtets
Post by: BGBMAW on May 24, 2006, 03:58:40 PM
Anyone here know much about steel

types ect for shooting at?

I just picked up some "scrap 10x 10" plates  1/2 " thick..

they seem to take more of a beating then my sheep did...same thickness

I have read some stuff about it..just not fully versed on it..

Im going to pick up more steel..just dont want to waste money on"soft"steel

For smaller pieces like the 10 by 10's you could try doing some simple case hardening. Heat them up with a torch and quench them in an oil or even water bath. It might save the original investment. Secondly on the soft plates use cast lead slugs only to make them last.

1/2 inch should be ok with most center fire pistol's. No mags! If you looking for center fire rifles then 3/4 is the only real choice. I have a plate of 3/4 out at the ranch for long bombs and it looks really bad after some joker shot it 100 times with a m1 grand. I think he was shooting it at 100 yards 30.06 will put some big holes into it. I would say 3/8 is a good size for pistol and 1/2 for long guns up to .223 at 100 yards swingers. My plate rack has 3/8 and it looks fine.

BTW dont shoot FMJ at and steel target. Lead our copper is ok but with lead you will find that you will not have splash back. Copper is ok just not at 10 yards.

Remember to angle them appropriately to avoid ricochets.  Ask me how I know....  :D

Don't make it too complicated for BGB. Remember, simple things for simple minds! By the way, Check 6 BGB. Had a blast up in sacto area golfing couple weeks back.

Top hinge them so the bottom swings away when hit. That not only absorbs impact and helps prevent burn-through but also causes ricochets to hit the ground below the plates. I have a series of 1/2 inch plates that take a dent from 5.56NATO at 100 yards, the 7.62X39 hurts 'em prety badly, 7.62NATO penetrates almost completely, 30-06 goes straight through. I have no idea what grade of steel it is, but they are heavy.

theses plates are all hanging from cables..whcih i have to replace every once in awhile..when they get shrapnel to saw them...

i have noticed to nevr really shoot closer then 100yds with .223 or 308s..

There is a diff in the metals ..my  ram i bougth for 80$s doesnt get such deep of divots compared to the steel..same thickness that i just bought

Yeah, there's dozens of different grades of steel, hard/soft/maleable/brittle. I'm really not familiar with all the different types, aloominum has many types too.

If you want it to last get CR steel (cold roll). It is shinier than HR and much more expensive.

If you can find some high-carbon steel, that should last longer, but may be more expensive if you have to actually buy it.

Heat-treating it will also make it harder - basically, get it hot (over 400 F) and then quench it with oil or water.

A good source for heavy steel is the highway department. You can sometimes get old plates (the big square ones they put on the roads to cover trenches, etc.) if they are getting rid of damaged ones.

Hangin from a tree is ok for really heavy plates but for small one you will have them going nuts with a hit. For those tagets with rifle i like two T post with heavy cable our rebarb strung across. Nice and easy can be taken down fast and you dont need to have a tree around.
