Title: Just bought a used car...
Post by: Urchin on May 24, 2006, 11:51:50 PM
Hyundai Sonata, 2001 with 69000 miles on it.  Paid 8100 for it including a 3 year warranty on the drive train.  Figured that would be the best way to ensure nothing happened to it :).

On the bad side.. I already found some things wrong with it that I should've found before I bought it.

One, there is something wrong with the windshield washer thingie.  No fluid comes out.  I checked it before I bought it and assumed that it was empty, so I told the salesman to please put some fluid in before I we finished the deal.  He said he would, and sure enough I just checked it and it is full of washer fluid lol.  Still nothing coming out though.

Another thing is the power locks don't seem to work real well.  Sometimes they work when you hit em, and sometimes they just don't.  They happened to work when I checked em before I bought the car, I've had em just do nothing twice now until I hit em a couple times, then they worked ok.

So you all think if I take this car back to the dealer where I got it tomorrow and say "Hey, the windshield washer and the power locks don't seem to be working, I wonder if you guys could take a look and maybe fix them for me?" would they say "Ok" or "Haha, tough ****".

I'm leaning toward the latter, but that is just because I tend to think that most used car dealers are crooks (well, they are human after all).

Anyway, if you don't count the two things that are wrong with it, it is a very nice car so far.  It is only a 4 cylinder, but I don't really do very much drag racing anyway lol.  Seems like it gets outstanding gas mileage, although I haven't started measuring yet.

A couple things in your favor here. The check probably hasn't cleared the bank yet and the problems are minor. Any halfway decent dealer will likely fix them.

If not, you can fix it yourself. Check to see if the pump motor runs when you push the button. If not, they are usually VERY simple to replace and cost about $10. If it is running, look for a busted hose up under the spray nozzles.

The door locks sound like they are just gunked up if they sometimes work. Very common if the previous owner was a smoker. Try removing the switches and spraying them with some contact cleaner.

Yea, I tried to listen to see if the pump motor was running.. it is either or the wipers make a lot of noise when they go lol.  I definately hear a motor running when I hit the button to spray the cleaning fluid.

I'm pretty much automotivally retarded, I did manage to replace the wiper motor in my old car but I had a book that told me (kinda) what to do.

I think I'll go out and buy the book for my new car and check it out, but I don't want to break it right after I bought it lol.

Check the factory warranty.  My Hundai company car had a 10 year 100k mile warranty, and they fixed Everything every time I took it in.

Mind you, I don't drive that now, just bought a new Stang :)  But the hundai is still a good car, sales guy drives it now.

Put your hand on the motor, have someone push the button and feel if it spins. It could be something as simple as the filter screen is dirty or the hose is clogged. Try blowing thru it and see what happens.

I had a 1988 F250 that went thru washer pumps about twice a year. The impeller shaft would corrode and cause the motor to lock up. I tried every brand of washer fluid (including plain ol' water) and they all did the same thing. It also suffered from cracking hoses regularly. The heat off that diesel engine would cook 'em.

Also, check to make sure all the washer hoses are sound.  I had a Saturn that would pop the washer hose every once in a while... once I figured out what it was it was a simple matter to reconnect the hose under the hood and put a hose clamp on it.

The locks sounds like a dirty switch.  The same Saturn had a sticky window switch.  I took apart the panel, cleaned it out, and all went back to working fine.

I'd go back to the dealer and make him fix both the non-functioning wiper fluid and the door locks...Ask him who did the safety check/certification and that should get him to fix it.

I hope it's not electrical problems with the locks being the first thing to go.

Urch, in most states you have some time before the deal becomes "final".  Take it back, point out this stuff is inop and tell them to fix it or you want your check back.

Hyundai's have a 5 year/60K warranty, bumper to bumper. The 10/100 on the power train does not transfer to the second owner.

If they give ya the heave ho, I'll come take you to the local auction and we'll get you another Hyundai that's still in warranty.  ;)

my last two cars I bought at CarMax.  For the first 5 days after you buy the car you can bring it back if you decided it wasn't the car for you or you just plain dont like it anymore and trade it for another car no questions asked.   First 30 days 100% warrenty on the entire car.  CarMax buyers avoid "bad" cars and try to pick the best used cars they can find

Carmax Buys most of their cars where all other dealers get most of their cars...auto auctions.....Carmax always pays too much at the auction for cars....Hope you did your homework on the car you bought!!

I must have just been lucky when they replaced my interior door handles because the Chrome finish started to peal..at 68,000 miles, after I bought the car with 20k miles on it.  While it was at Hundai to replace the door, they also replaced the center console cover which had a plastic lock snap.

Didn't ask them to, but I thought it was kind of them.  Out the door without a sales pitch, trade in request, or so much as a question about what I used to keep the interior clean and perhaps caused the chrome to peel, just said "Yep, that's not good" and fixed her up.

Must have been my charming smile :D

"Hyundai Sonata, 2001 with 69000 miles on it. Paid 8100 for it including a 3 year warranty on the drive train. Figured that would be the best way to ensure nothing happened to it "

My gosh that's a lot of money for an old Hyundai!  Powertrain warranties are a waste of money 95% of the time--they don't cover the things that normally break.  Get OUT of that purchase if you can!

For that same amount of money, you could buy a mid/late 90's upscale car with much lower mileage on the odometer.  My Roadmaster cost just over $6K and had 42K miles.  For $8000 you could be driving a Cadillac; just a quick internet search reveals multiple late 90's DeVilles listed at that price with 60K miles or less.

Point being--$8K is too much for an old Hyundai, whether you want a Cadillac or not.  Yes, I know the blue book sites say that's what they're worth, but that's more because of the year than the mileage.  If you're looking for a used car, go back a few more years--you'll get a lot more bang for your dollar.

If you can, find a car that old people owned.  They often have remarkably low mileage, and old people drive like 30 MPH so they're usually in good shape.  Be willing to drive a bit to pick up a car and you'll have plenty of options to choose from.  I had to drive about 225 miles to pick up the Buick, but it was definately worth it.

the purple powerband should fix the door locks but i'm betting he might need an aquamarine to fix the windsheild washers

Haha, I'm halfway retarded.  Well, some might say all the way, but I dn't like them anyway.

So I take it to the dealer today, and the salesman sees me right away.  I tell him about the locks and the washer fluid thing.  He says he'll talk to someone for me, then he goes off and tries to sell cars to two more people while I wait.  I was getting a little bit pissed.  So in that time two more salespeople come by and say that the problem will be taken care of, the dealership is good about that.

So after about an hour, the salesguy finally comes back.  I tell him whats going on again, he wants to go look at it himself.  So he pushes the same knob in that I've been pushing in and no washer fluid comes out.  He says, "Yea, its probably just the motor, what you'll have to do is..." At that point I interupted and said "What I have to do?"  He says "Yea, it isn't covered under the warranty"... then a tech guy walks by.  So he yells for the tech guy to come over, and the tech guy does the same thing, then looks for the motor.  The motor is under some panel that has to be removed.

Then he tries the locks, and they don't work.  At that point, the tech says "Yea, definately something wrong", and tells the sales guy to go talk with the service manager.  After the sales guy leaves, the tech guy says to me "Yea, they'll take care of it for you, don't worry about it."

So then the sales guy comes back and says "You buy the extended warranty?  The service people need to see it to find out if you are covered or not."  I hand him the warranty I bought (which was just for the drivetrain... and we both knew it, and he leaves again.

The tech guy wanders off.  Eventually the sales guy comes back and tells me the service people decided I'm SOL.  He tells me he' on my side, yadda yadda, etc. I tell him not to try to feed me a line of bull****, and ask to speak to his boss.  He says his boss isn't there.  I ask to speak to that guy's boss.  He says that THAT guy isn't there.  I ask him to write their names down for me, and he does.

Then I go over to the new car building (its like a complex), and ask the salesguy who asks if he can help me where his boss is.  The guy is like "Is everything ok?"  I said "No, but thanks for asking"... and then he went and got his boss.

Well, I tell his boss the story... his boss calls the used car boss and gets permission to fix the damn car.

The service manager comes and checks out the car first.  He sprays wiper fluid all over the place while I watch, dumbfounded.  You have to pull the little lever towards you, not push the little button in.  I really felt dumb.

Anyway, something really was wrong with the locks.. they take it back for an hour or so, then a guy gives me the keys back and says its fixed.  I go check it out, it still doesn't work right.  So I go give my keys back to em, and they notice that they didn't "fix" what was wrong lol.  For some reason they thought the key wasnt working when I was fairly explicit in saying the power lock switch wasn't working.

So they check that out for an hour, figure out that the switch went bad, and have to order a new one.  Hopefully it'll be fixed tomorrow.
