Yes, it is a sad thing.

 http://www.cnn.com/2001/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/27/aaliyah.death/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2001/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/27/aaliyah.death/index.html)

"Gloria Knowles, who works for Abaco Air Ltd. at Marsh Harbour airport, said baggage handlers reported the plane was overloaded with suitcases.

She said the handlers and the plane's pilot complained about the heavy load but the passengers insisted on taking everything with them."

 http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/2001-08-25-aaliyah.htm (http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/2001-08-25-aaliyah.htm)

She had finished making a music video and was bound for Miami on Saturday when her chartered twin-engine Cessna 402B crashed after takeoff at Marsh Harbour International Airport on Abaco Island. The craft, which apparently suffered engine failure, exploded on impact 200 feet beyond the runway."

It's sad that the baggage handlers didn't do their job.

It's sad that some passengers think the laws of physics and flight don't apply to aircraft in which THEY are traveling.

It's extremely sad that the pilot-in-command COMPLETELY failed to do his job on the baggage situation. (It's going to be a very easy and lucrative law suit, however.)

It's sad that Fate somehow knows when you are overgrossed and then picks that time to fail an engine on takeoff. It's almost as if someone or something malicious IS watching... and laughing.

It's sad that she and the other eight are gone. Really sad because this was most likely a "preventable" accident.

I don't understand one thing, why is everyone careing about her, what about other 8 people? I got into big fight with my girlfriend about this. How can you pay so much attantion to just one person when those "OTHERS" died just like her and no one said one word.

Ahhhhh.... the gal from "Romeo must Die".

And Toad... I couldn't agree more.

And Russian... What's worse... someone being saddened because someone they are familiar with died in a plane crash or being pissed about the other 8 that died (whom you didn't even know).

That is the most reasonable view. You are just not supposed to say it in public and expect any respect afterwards, at least in this country.
It's called politeness and it only seems optional to stupid people.

Still sad when a young life is taken, no matter what his/her stature in life.

Think it was Josef Stalin that said "One death is a tragedy, one million a statistic".  At least, if it wasn't him, I've heard it attributed to him.

In America at least, having money and/or fame make you "special".  This is both good and bad.  In your life you will be harried relentlessly and singled out for behaviour that you and many of the "common rabble" share (i.e. adultery, drug habits, what have you).  However, in your death you will be remembered as something better than you probably actually were.  The only reason anyone even knows this plane crashed is because this artist was on board, had she not been there it wouldn't have even been news.

By the way, I have absolutely no idea who she was, never listened to R&B or blues.  Doesn't mean that those who mourn her passing have feelings that are any less valid than those who don't, though.

IMO, you also deserve to die, amazinhunk. And I do hope you die soon. Morons like you are in short supply around me though. I'm glad, or I'd be in jail already with many charges.

Yes she was rich. Yes, many people die in plane crashes but are not mourned. That is sad.

But to say that she DESERVED to die?
only because she was rich?
she was a black artist who had to work very hard for what she achieved. I believe you are envious. I believe that for that, you too deserve to die.

Nice troll, Russian. It worked.

Add Aaliyah to the list of young performers that we will not get to enjoy in the future...

Kevin Gilbert
Selena Quintanilla Perez
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Joey Calleja

The list goes on...

These people are not "special" but they had the ability to touch the lives of millions. It's sad.

Yes i deserve to die, but so do YOU.

ps. This whole thing was just, that nobody cares about those 8 others. If ive said, that they (8 others) deserved to die, you would prolly just said, "thats rude, roflmao". Hypocricy in its best. Animal, i give you 1 star for that.

Edit: I bet she had to work hard for her money..But if we look it mathematicly, not as hard as i have to. Point? She got more, i got less, i was jealous, but not anymore.

Actually Tuiomo... you only proved you are an ass.

I don't particularly care about any of the participants in the plane.  I'm not glad they died, I'm just not impacted.  Its sad to see a series of blatant mistakes cause a group of people's deaths.

What I do care about is someone citing that this person deserved it.  That makes you an ass.  I believe I am more than qualified in the ways of the bellybutton to know a brother when I see him.

Animal doesn't quite make the bellybutton level.  More like an armpit.  Not quite as stinky.. but still someplace you don't really wanna lick.

This (my post) arguing gets inflated. Tell you the truth that i didnt actually mean what i said, just wanted to see the reaction. I got what i wanted.

Edit: Animal, ofcourse i dont mean that rich people should die. It was just (bad) joke type of thing.

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

— Captain A. G. Lamplugh, British Aviation Insurance Group, London. Circa early 1930's.

Whenever we talk about a pilot who has been killed in a flying accident, we should all keep one thing in mind. He called upon the sum of all his knowledge and made a judgment. He believed in it so strongly that he knowingly bet his life on it. That his judgment was faulty is a tragedy, not stupidity. Every instructor, supervisor, and contemporary who ever spoke to him had an opportunity to influence his judgment, so a little bit of all of us goes with every pilot we lose.

I´f you dont find this sad then i guess people really cant think outside their own big heads and they think they are the center of the world...

Hmm. It was sort of black humor said over a person which none of us know. Anything except what he read from papers or similar.

What i get is like ive said that same thing in the earlier post few days ago that "officer down, please take a moment". That would be wrong place to say such a thing. But here, no. Read the rest of my first message. I care about as much of those passengers as i do now when theres pop star named Aliyah with them. "bugger" is maybe the feeling that i feel over those. And im very sure that thats even better than rest of the world feels.

So, dont act like ive hurt you personally, because i didnt. If i somehow hurted your classy bellybutton saying normal joke that "rich people are scum of the earth", then fine. Animal is really acting like a kid, get over it.

Animal: Yes im maybe full of it. But youre still amusing me. You are acting like i would be somehow responsible of her death, even IF i would think that she really deserved to die (which i dont, this was about third time i even heard that name and i bet she wasnt even rich compared to other pop artists). Yes im backing up from that statement, since so many didnt get it. My native language isnt english so sometimes my humour gets people even angry.

Maniac: Yes she very well had right to do what she did. Did i say otherwise? We didnt talk about careers, but who works hardest for his money, that can be calculated quite accurately you know, i give you the formula:
If somebody makes a million in year and i make 40,000 both doing same amount work in hours, who works most for x amount of bucks?

I wonder who was responsibe for overloading the plane. I'm sure it wasn't a voluntary decision of the pilot..

No idea who she is, movies or music. Thousands of people who don't deserve to die, do die everyday from all sorts fo accidents.
She asked for hers, sounds to me.

I don't understand why she should be mourned more then any of the 100s of people who died in car accidents or starvation around the world.

Aaliyah is with Allah.

May she rest in peace.

I’ve received some additional information about this incident from an “inside source”. It seems that the aircraft’s baggage wasn’t the only thing overweight.

Brace yourselves…

Aaliyah had gained six pounds over her summer tour. It seems that all those post concert binges of Ding Dongs and Twinkies did her in.

The weight gain coupled with the fact that she was nearing the mandatory retirement age of twenty-three was enough for the corporate powers to initiate her termination clause.

But don’t fret lads. There’s a replacement in the pipeline. She’ll be, you guessed it, cute, perky and have a tight little package.  ;)

You cannot choose to mourn, you just mourn the loss if that person was close to you.  I personnally would not come here and say that anyone deserved to die, because they are rich or whatever - this is called bad taste or bad manners, whichever you choose.

Death is not something that anyone deserves for any crime other than causing death intentionally IMHO.

Princess Diana was a well known person to die in an accident and it touched many, just because they dont know them in person doesnt mean you cant mourn.

Let these talk about someone who they felt deserved to be remembered, and dont dare tell them different in their own thread.

I think Alliyah did ask for it.

The pilot probably and most likely warned the passengers of overloading and I bet the Passengers also handed the pilot a few extra franklins to get them out of thier predicament. Just funny how People with wealth are not concerned with thier own well being.

Got this off the local news earlier this morning and figured you guys might wanna know.

From what I've heard, the pilot wasn't type-rated for that perticular aircraft. It was overloaded with luggage but by how much they didn't say. One thing they did mention was that the owner had been cited several times (4 or 5 I think) for safety violations. It could be rumor, I'm not sure. The aircraft was a Cessna 402B twin, rated for a max take-off of 6,300 lbs. Her body was flown back to the states yesterday.

Luis Morales who was the pilot of the AC was convicted no less then an month ago for having drugs on him (he also was known to to be an drug smuggler) He got of easy with 3 years probation (dunno if this is the right word) He got an job as an part of his "rehabilitation" and guess what this job was? yes Pilot, because he had an AC license.

THE BEST PART IS THIS : HIS FIRST PILOTING JOB WAS TO FLY Aaliyah and her crew.

Luis Morales was a Puerto Rican pilot, hes been flying for almost 8 years WORKING for different airlines. I never met the guy personally but according to my flight instructor he frequented my flight school whenever he was in PR, and was a nice guy and good pilot.

There was a biography posted on the local newspaper 2 days after the crash, and there is NO mention of such charges.

Bah Animal you know better than that you know how the press in this Island is a crock of ...  they clean up everything hide details to shape someone into what they want the people to see. Then again  Luis Morales if he was convicted for drug usage he won't even touch an airplane kiddie  we're regulated by the same FARs that regulate the Continental US regarding pilots and licensing so I don't think the drug usage  would have a part in this although that it needs to be investigated.

NO the most likely cause was that the airplane was overloaded lost an engine down it went. If it was out of Cg lmits then this aircraft more than likely would of been very difficult to control. NOw the question lies who is at fault here  the courier for overloading the aircraft, the PIC which  is solely responsible for determing if the aircraft is airworthy,or everything above. BUt to FARs the PIC is always at fault then into further investigation other people find blame in this. But as of right now the PIC would be the sole bearer of reponsability in a mishap.

Sad but something we pilots have to live with each time we strap on an aircraft.

While the pilot should be ultimately responsible for knowingly flying an overloaded plane, if that was the case.
It seems convenient to me however, that in most plane crashes they scream pilot error first off, that way it can't really harm the career of the guy they pin it on, since he is often deceased

I know that the press here (as all the press in the world) are blood sucking trying to take advantage of what people want to believe in.

But this guy was NOT a drug convict. He was a regular joe pilot, probably overwhelmed by the fact that he was flying a hot celebrity who he felt he had to please.

If I was the pilot of that plane, I would have NOT flown it, unless I would have been getting booty from Aaliyah, wich he was not, so it was his mistake. Sadly to admit, but it probably was his fault to fly an overloaded plane; IF he knew this, and IF he gave the OK to fly an overloaded plane.

We never know all the truth.

I heard somewhere there was an argument about the luggage weight. I think the pilot knew he was overloaded and refused to fly, but he was paid off and took it up anyway.
