Yes sir,
Last week we had a flight for 3 mornings. Got to wake them up, takem to PT then get the dorm set up.
Friday we got to teach individual drill to "rainbows" (zero week trainees still in civies). They hadn't even had their hair cuts yet and I was teaching Right/Left/About face. One kid looked like he wanted to crap himself everytime I got close to him.
Tomorrow we do a 5 mile ruck march....tuesday is the confidence course. Wed. I get my squadron assignment and friday I post with my trainer (no more class room acidemics) and I pick up my first flight next week. I get my hat when the graduate July 21st :aok

Guns... Dunno if you agree or if it's possible, but...
/rant on/
If you see ANYONE wearing the new AF utility uniform with any kind of ironed creases or even a HINT that it's been touched with an iron and starch, can you c***-punch them for me? Please? The Marines and Army don't have to iron their utilities and they look damn sharp (mean too), so once again we're going to be shooting ourselves in the foot and getting teased by our joint bretheren if we take a perfectly good utility uniform and ruin it by starching/ironing.
I gotta uniform that is just for looking sharp... It's called service dress. If I need to look picture-perfect, need mirror shined shoes, and need creases I can shave with, I put on my blues.
The DI that ran my Dad through marine boot camp wore the USMC equivalent to our "blues" almost every day for the entire course, and my Dad never once sprayed starch on his "diving headfirst into mud" uniforms... When they had to look sharp, they either wore clean and "neat" battle uniforms or uniforms that were specifically designed to be starched and pressed. And they looked damned good too.
I get the feeling that our "distinctive USAF look" when it comes to our attempts to make garrison utility and combat uniforms keep a crease is universally viewed by every other service as "stupidly mis-prioritized effort" and a total joke. One more way the USAF doesn't "get it".
I know you probably have to toe the party line and you get your party line straight from the Chiefs, but you're a lot closer to the fight than I am so maybe you can tease a few of those starch-and-press types into admitting that if they need to look pretty, maybe they should be wearing blues instead of starched utilities. I suspect that our entire customs for wearing the new blue utilities will be set in stone by the end of 2006, and if anyone gets away with pressing the new shirt we'll have lost the common sense fight all over again. That's all we need, to be derided by the other services AGAIN for ruining yet another perfectly good utility uniform...
Er...
/rant off/

hehe, just hit IMG and insert the adress to the pic ONE time and you are set. You had a double set of IMG codethingy at each end.
-
Eagl, why would the pockets be sewn shut?
-
Moot,
In the USAF, there are a lot of people who think that our battle dress uniform ought to look as crisp and sharply pressed as our blues. The uniform design however does not lend itself to that. Specifically, the expandable cargo style pockets on the pants and shirt look terrible if you take a shirt off the rack and just press it. The expandable "cargo" part of the pockets sticks out and looks horrible, and the thick buttons used to hold the pockets shut make it so when you press or iron the pockets, you either break the buttons or the pocket flap curls up and sticks out, again looking quite horrible.
The only solution to this problem, since those in power insist on our BDUs being starched and pressed, is to cut off the buttons and make all the pockets "fake" by sewing them shut and removing the extra material that made them useful in the first place.
You see, the USAF is trying to be more "combat ready" like the other forces are, so to help the corporate mentality we're all wearing combat uniforms instead of blues whenever possible. But since we're just faking it and a good portion of our force actually works indoors in air conditioned buildings and will never ever actually have to do anything dirty, those chair-force soldiers insist that our BDUs must be starched and pressed.
It's pissed me off for more than 16 years now. We finally have a new and improved utility uniform that is made of material that supposedly doesn't need ironing, and in a design that doesn't need starching or pressing, yet we all know that some chair-force pseudo-soldier somewhere is going to insist that not only does his troops wear the new utilities all the time even though they're in desk jobs, he'll also insist that they starch and press them, putting creases where they don't belong, etc. Those chair-force types are going to ruin the uniform wear rules for those of us who actually have to work out "in the field" (ie. anywhere not in a nice air conditioned building behind a desk).
I've been in a non-flying status for 2 years now, and the ONLY reason I've continued wearing my flight suit is because it's wing policy to wear a utility uniform instead of blues, and because if I wore BDUs like I really wanted to, I'd have to starch and press them to avoid getting hassled by the chair force starch-and-press types.
I work with a lot of army troops and marines, and they all look really sharp and business-like in their new design utility uniforms. And they don't have creases starched into their sleeves. But guess what - someone somewhere is going to make his troops starch a crease into the new USAF utilities, and from there it's only a short step back to sewing the pockets shut and starching the crap out of what is supposed to be a utility uniform.
They want it both ways - They want to present a sharp garrison appearance behind their desks, but they also want to foster a combat mentality in the troops. Well, you can have it both ways if you draw the line between desk duty and field work, but instead they're furiously pounding it into the enlisted force that they're a bunch of un-patriotic slackers if they don't have creases in their utilities or starch the heck out of uniforms that are supposed to be utilities.
I say suck it up and wear blues if you're in a job that needs creases on your sleeves, and keep the utility uniform for it's intended purpose.
But I'm gonna lose. There are too many 30 yr Chief Master Sergeants who disagree with me, because that's the way they were growed up and that's the way it will stay.
A Chief's opinion generally carries a lot more weight than a rated Major in a 1 year staff job between flying assignments, and I'm not stupid enough to try to challenge a Chief over a stupid uniform policy, because that's HIS job, not mine. So I'll go along being a disgruntled pilot who refuses to wear BDUs because the wear standards are, in my opinion, based on an absolutely incorrect set of priorities. Since the Chiefs set and enforce the standards based on guidance from the General Officers, my opinion doesn't matter too much.
-
And I'm pretty sure Guns knows this already, but it's worth saying outright - I'm just sport-griping. Guns is just an easy target because of his new job, and given the forum here, I'm assuming he knows that I'm just sport griping. He doesn't get his marching orders from me, and I'm not stupid enough to try to tell him how to do his job. And he's courteous enough to not tell me to shove my opinion up my bung.
The USAF enlisted force will do just fine under the tutelage of good instructors like Guns, in spite of the opinions of officers like me :) All griping aside, the traditions, customs, and courtesies in the military are what keeps us from being just a bunch of guys with guns and expensive toys. The fact that some of those traditions don't make any sense has nothing to do with the inherent value of perpetuating those traditions to maintain the unique identity of the force.
And that's the real reason why guys sew their BDU pockets shut.

Small boat sailors are usually a mite touchy. Or touched. ;)
It's a world of finesse, tactics and experience balanced (literally) on brawn and balls. Timid, they are not.. for only the VERY aggressive are succesful. Vis-a-vis, those same sailors on larger keel boats like a Soling can kill yah.. for unlike the 'dingys', when yah push just a wee bit too far and they broach or capsize.. they sink... or worse.
-
The only thing I can agree with are the tactics. The boats we sail are slow, ugly and unstable. They frustrate the hell out of me.

The Soling is a fine boat designed By Jan Herman Linge: My father used to know him and he has designed many fine boats. I learned to sail on an Yngling (kinda like a smaller version of the Soling)

Eagl,
Where do I start.
First off I'm the type that thinks garrison office types should wear blues. If they aren't in the field then they where a dress uniform. Along with that I think the maintainers should wear a maint. type uniform. Why should I wear camoflauge that isn't practical to work in and then defeat the purpose of wearing said camoflauge by puting on a reflective belt so people can see me at night?
As you said it's a loss of common sense. I hope we don't have to press out the new BDU. Personally when I'm working mait. I put light starch and run an iron over my BDUs briefly. There's nothing like trying to crawl around underneith the seat of an F15 or discontorting myself to fit in the rear AVbay of an F16 and have my uniform all starchy and unworkable.
In my job now I have to establish standards, even if they aren't practical. I show up everyday with spit shined combat boots that I'd never wear into combat, and razor sharp creased BDUs that would probably cause my uniform to split in half if put under a heavy field load.
To make matters worse I post with my squadron next week. This means I will be the Jr-est of Jrs so I will be working no less than 12-14 hour days and upwards to 15-18 hours at worst. That extra hour and a half I spend prepping my uniform takes away from what little time I have to sleep and spend time with my family so I shell out alot of money by taking them to the cleaners. With the humidity here and my work load I go through easily 5-6 uniforms a week, sometimes 2 per day.....just to establish a standard I don't myself beleive in.....but it's expected of me.
Personally it angers me that I see people that aren't flying wearing a flight suit....SPs riding bycicles wearing shorts....and office types having "polo-shirt friday" when I am not seeing combat yet wearing a combat uniform that is in reality ineffective for combat.

My uniform:
-
Our civvy maintainers at Sheppard wear a dark blue uniform that sorta looks like a cross between the old style olive drab utilities and a more modern cut "maintenance" style work outfit. It has built-in creases where there should be creases, looks like it's wash and wear, and it looks fairly decent. The Calif Hwy Patrol officers at vehicle inspection stations wear something similiar, and they look fine too.
But if you give mx troops their own uniform, then EVERYONE would want their own uniform. Heck, just look at the trouble pilots get into for having our own uniform. Everyone hates us just because we get to wear nice comfy flight suits :) Even missile and space types had to switch away from their special uniforms, and of course they switched to... flight suits.

Took a pic of my father while in the Navy 1952 (center)
Took his basic training pic USAF 2000 (right)
Gave the 3 pics to an artist and he made this oil painting.
Kinda cool because not only shows 3 generations of military, but were all 3 around 20 -24 years of age in the pic.

That right there is kewl.
-
have you decided yet if your grandson is going to be army or marine?
-
The original Oil Painting is on my wall.
As far as the grand kids go, It really doesn't matter, all services have there good points. I did 12 yrs in the USCG and been in the Army the past 10. So i guess we do need a Marine in the house.
Reason I switched over to the Army was due to being a single parent of two. The Army afforded more time at home with them.

As you can see in the pic, I sometimes remember to shave. And every six months, I cut my hair whether I need to or not. In general, my appearance is of utmost importance, so all the uniform stuff Eagl and Gunslinger talked about means I really really wanna join the US Air Force.
And I am almost never drunk. My overwhelming respect for authority and wish to follow orders is also very clear from the picture.

Astac,
Weeks? That was my grandfather's last name. He was navy too. Signed up around Dec 8 1941, received a field commission followed by OTS to make it permanent, entered the reserves after the war, and retired as a commander after about 40 years of service.
Strangely enough, I have another uncle Robert Weeks who was also Navy.
Er... You wouldn't happen to be Robert "the third" would you?
-
Great pictures guys. May hat's off to all of you, and thank you for your service.
Hondo, like others said, that painting is sweet.

Nope I'm actually one of 3 Robert Weeks(not related directly) in the Navy right now....and the first Robert D. Weeks in my family in the Navy..My Grandfather (Ernest) was Enlisted in WW2 and stayed on for 35 years got a commission in his last 10 years retired a LtJG..My father(Don) was Active for 4 then reserves for 16..other than that There are no others in my branch of the vast Weeks family in the USA in the service. The 3 of us have Continuous service since WW2..and like the Jimmy Buffet song..I am a "Son of a Son of a Sailor"

SFCHONDO that is one fine painting. I wish I had a boot camp pic, but we had a gig that day and I missed the photo shoot. The only pic of me in uniform is a group shot of the Coast Guard Band.
Were you in an honor company in boot? When I went thru Alameda in '78 (OH-124) only Honor Guard and Band wore ascotts and braid.
-
rpm, Yes I was in the Honor Guard in Basic. I went thru basic at Cape May, NJ. They closed Alameda by the time I joined in 1984. You are correct the only ones to wear the Ascott and braids were the Honor Guard guys.
Then in 1996 when I transfered over to the Army I had the priviage to return to Basic at FT. Leornard Wood, MO.
