I have the opportunity to upgrade my video card. i just found out an associate of mine has a daughter that works at Frys.
I had 200 budgeted
for a new card, but with an employee discount I figure I can go higher.
my current card is in my sig. what would be my best bet in the 200 to 300 range to match my system.

upgraded my ati 9800 pro to this:

big difference in eye candy in ah2 and other games - great card

the frys employee discount fell through
I ordered the X800 gto from newegg for 159 dollars.
I am gearing up to do some serious overclocking, i cleaned up all my wires neat and tidy to help with airflow,i also bought a fan monitor with cpu temp probe, the one on the msi motherboard is the suck.
38 I haven't forgotten your invitation to assist me, I want to have all my ducks in a row before i start pumping up the box.

NP pollock , anytime . I'm intrested to see what she'll do . Gunna research the bios flash for that card as well . Seems 16 pipes are easily attained . 8)

I am hoping stock should be plenty for AH regarding the vid card. I also picked up a coolermaster extreme power psu @ 600watts only 50 bucks after 30 dollar rebate :D

This may help in unlocking the pipelines of that card.

Pollock!
Just built a new sytem with IDE and AGP vid card. Matter of fact running it for the first time.
ASUS A8V Mobo (Can overclock)
X800XT All-In-Wonder vid card 256 mem.
Athlon64 4000+ CPU (clawhammer)
2ghz of Corsair dual channel memory.
I stayed with AGP also....read some reviews and most state that PCIe at the present is no better. But PCIe makes it cheaper to build hardware. That's the main reason we have PCIe.....not the lack of performance in AGP.
Good luck with your choice! My other PC has an X800Pro and I get FR of 60 to 85 constantly! Remember your FR will be no better then the refresh rate of your monitor! So if your monitor can support 85hz refresh rate at 1280X1024 32 bit do it! (or whatever resolution you monitor size requires)
Even with the X800Pro I had my sliders to quality, vert sync on and 6X Anti Aliasing......you'll be able to do the same if ya have the cpu for it.

just got my 850Xt yesturday, and i must say theres some nice eyecandy now, like water the looks so real i wantto go swimming in it

If the card companys offered highend AGP cards i would prolly still be using my old AGP skt 754 3400+ . Afaik the AGP bus wasnt close to being full saturated by video cards when pcie came out , althought they might be getting closer now , i would bet they still arent . Lower costs and SLI killed highend AGP, but i think midrange -lower range AGP will be around for a few more years .
-
as long as i can get two more years of AH2 out of my box i will be happy.

whhat considered low and high end video cards anymore?
is the newer the higher and older the lower,
or is there a comparitive chart out there?
-
Basically what defines low end - high end are the specs of the card, and age . The X850 you recently got was a highend card a couple of generations ago . since the X850 there has been the x1800 now the X1900 . So the X850 is prolly considered mid range right now . My 7800GT was higher end about 6 months ago , now its prolly the higher part of the midrange or lower part of the high end . This is all my opinion thou , its my take on graphics cards .

Installed the new card.
Good resullts!
My Aquamark score went from 48820 to 63743.
FPS in game stays mostly at my lcd max of 75 rarely dipping below 40 in high activity . New vid settings are 1280 x 1024 4x fsaa, 8 x antiropic filtering.
I havent even unlocked the pipes.....yet.
Thanks for the advice on the card 38 MAW, new egg has a 30 dollar rebate to boot making this a very sweet deal.
