Title: Match Up Equivalent Planes by Performance
Post by: Hap on June 01, 2006, 05:03:19 PM
I was looking at the "furballer" thread under general discussion, and I have a question that others with more facts at their finger tips can answer; and the discussion might prove interesting.

Using our plane set which planes flown by equally superior pilots will offer closely matched fights?

For example,  jug-11, fw a-5, and ki-61 . . . would they not offer pilots no great mechanical disadvantage if they met at 15k 250 indicated (white needle on our dials) airspeed?

But please, experts, weigh in!  And which planes do you see matching closely by performance?

A cunning question.
Put my money on the KI, just for fun

Jug vs. 190A5 is always a good fight. Each has its slight advantages but no winning card. At sea level the 190A5 will feel a little better, up high the jug will.

Ki61 is a different beast. Turns much better than the other two but also slower. The 190A5 should be the more dangerous opponent since it builds E faster and will dominate the fight if wisely flown.

angus, are the similar planes, groups of 2's, 3's, or 4's that you can think of that will present the pilots upon merge a high degree of mechinical equality?

Another challenging question.
My first thought would be the U.S. Iron. Out of the dark, some P51, P47, P38 perhaps, and some F4U.
Of natural enemies, emmm, P38G and 109F, HurryI and A6M2, Spit I and 109E, SpitV and 109F, FM2 and Ki61, C202 and SpitV/P38G, and so on and on. Bugger you Hap, I'm going to be pondering on this all day and going to the TA :D
The reason I put my bucks on the KI before is BTW that the 250 miles speed isn't that high. Don't think a 190 would get away with the zoom, and after that it's turning and diving, etc.
