Title: David Attenborough on Climate Change
Post by: beet1e on June 02, 2006, 09:26:19 AM
I managed to catch the second in this series of programmes by David Attenborough, which was shown on BBCtv last night. Link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/climatechaos.shtml

Some interesting and scary material. Amongst the interesting points made in this programme were the projection that the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by commercial aircraft is set to double in 25 years, and that China will build a new coal fired power station every week for the next seven years.

Some people are dismissive of the global catastrophe that awaits our grndchildren if we do nothing to cut our carbon emissions. They say that the earth "goes through cyclic changes", and ascribe all global warming to this. However, the climatologists interviewed by Attenborough are using supercomputers (the one shown looked like a Cray) with a processing speed of 10,000 mips to form a prognosis based on the data supplied, and the predicted global increase in temperature is based not on cyclic changes, but purely on the volume of man-made greenhouse gas. Thus, the analysis leaves little doubt that human activity is responsible for the bulk of the problem.

An interesting crumb of comfort was provided by the American scientist Steve Pencala, of Princeton University, who has a seven point plan for how to cap greenhouse gas emissions at 2006 levels.

I'll post more later - I'm short of time just now.

Mother nature will kill us off long before we kill her off, and the cycle will start over again.  Only those who can survive without creature comforts will live to keep the human experiment alive.

based on data supplies?

Human error..creates human error..

So ..beatle beleives what the computer says..Which is based on human
 input?

What would Qatar do?

Why dont you go protest in China?

Go troll the chinese websites..getthem to "beleive' you

While I was born and raised in Texas and live there now, my worst nightmare is having to live without air conditioning. I'd likely be one of the first to go.

Thus, they can reach any conclusion they wish to present.  Attlenborough tries to lend creedance to the results by linking them to the use of a Cray supercomputer.  It doesn't matter how much processing power is available, they just get the predetermined answer faster.

two times nothing is nothing... ten times nothing is nothing... does he happen to say how much co2 is produced by nature every year and how much is produced by man?

I'm not yet convinced that the slight warming trend we are seeing is anything more than just another one of earths climatic cycles.

Thats exactly why I am not yet convinced. :D

Actually the worlds oceans put out about 98% of the hydrocarbons. And man adds about 2%. But they argue that, that upsets the balance. Using that as logic, a cow fart will upset the balance.

what we need to do is promote peacefull forms of suicide.  Especially in europe, asia, the middle east, africa and ....oh yeah, canada.  Maybe even provide incentives like a cash incentive, provided after the suicide of course.

Once the money for suicide plan is in place, start notching up the greenshouse carbon monoxide connection and how important it s that everyone commit suicide........in a few short weeks we should be back to around 400,000,000 and then we can start realistic conservation whilst we go and pillage all the cool stuff left over in europe, asia, the middle east, africa and ....oh yeah, canada.

:cry  :D

ooops  forgot mexico :aok

well... just a short time ago... beet was telling us "its the co2 stupid"

now... I simply ask him if he knows how much co2 is produced by nature every year compared to that created by man.

A hint....   It's real close to nothing on mans side of the equation... in fact.... you would have to go back to the begging of time when the first liberal fell out of a tree and add up all the co2 man has created up till today to get a number that was even significant when compared to a year of natures gentle minstrations.

Oh my goodness gracious alive Marie!
The sky is falling...................... ...again.
The Evil U.S. Empire has to be thrown in here somewhere.
I`m getting my tinfoil hat and secret C02 converter while there is still hope. :D

Was watching the Captain of the Time Bandit the other night while he was busting off two feet of ice buildup on his vessel. He said he could use a little of that global warming everyone keeps talking about.  :D
