Title: X800 graphics card
Post by: bandit752 on June 05, 2006, 11:17:30 AM
I have a x800 pro ATI card. I notice that the frames rates are low!
I tried different resolution settings but still low. I get anywhere from 14-20!
Then when its gets crowded in the game the frame rates dropp below 15!

I have a AMD 64 3400 processor
XP flatform
1.5 G corsair value memory.
I have a cable internet connection.

Can anybody tell me the settings they have that are correct for these
settings. I would liketo use the High-res package should be able to with this card and memory????
I am not familar with all the settings on the card nor the settings I am suppose to have in aces high!!

Thanks!!!!

First step, get a copy of your Direct X diagnostic report and copy/paste the first 1/3 of it or so so we can see what drivers you are using, what your hardware setup is, etc.

I'm guessing, but you probably should NOT be using the high rez texture pack.  The X800 is a good card, but alot is dependent on memory.  High rez textures take up ALOT of memory.  The CPU is going to be doing alot of work too, and swapping stuff in and out of a overworked video card slows it down even more.

While you are at it, hit Ctrl Alt Del and tell us how many processes you have running.

Thank you for the reply!
I will post as soon as I get to the computer than has aces high!

I am using 1.5G on the memory and can only max at 2G!
so, i can increase the memory if needed by 512M

Thanks again!

2 GB will be nice, and a help, but I'm guessing your main problem is video memory.  There is just so much to go around, and then you are going to be swapping to system memory.  That takes time, and it takes attention from the CPU.  That slows things down, means slower fps.

Make sure you are not preloading anything to video memory in your Aces High video setup.  You can preload textures to system memory.  Dont preload skins.

You can also check this thread

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179212

The link there will show you how to streamline your system and get the most out of your video card.  That, with not overloading it in Aces High, will net you maxxed out frame rates and good performance.

Thanks again!
yes I preloaded everything!! Mistake!
I will forward the dxdiag upper 1/3 and the processes running!
The card is a PCI express with 256 Dual monitors!
I use the Dual montior mode for other programs!

I read that a under-powered power supply can cause problems with the
vid card?? I am using the power supply that came with the computer!
I can only guess that it is a typical 350W supply??
The computer is a emachine w3400 series and runs very fast!

Thanks again!

I'd get a new decent PSU, your machine should run AH pretty sweet if Windows is running ok.

The X800 will draw some juice, and you might experience crashes if your power supply isnt up to the job.  However, its not as bad as if you had a newer card in the X1000 series.  They draw even more power.  If you start experiencing crashes, you know where to look first :)

Thank you for the reply, I did order a 500w power supply from tiger direct.
and the memory is on its way.
what would be the best settings in AH for my card. I looked at the video settings and seems a little confusing.
If I get this correct these should be my settings. I dont know where the video Mz setting should be set at? 75MHz, 85???
but the pre-load video should be set off?
The skins should be off?
I would like to use the High-Res settings at 1024 but what should be the resolution set at??
If I choose not to use the High-Res, then should I re-load the regular download! Because I loaded the high-Res pack and that had installed!
so am i now using the High-Res pack?

Hope this isn't confusing to anybody but it's sure confusing to me!
Thanks again

Personally, I would not use the high rez textures with your setup.  You CAN use them.  The video card is fast enough, you have enough memory, etc.  Just remember that for everything you "bump up", you use more of that memory.  For my part, I'd rather use the 512 max texture size and bump up the eye candy settings a little further.  But thats my opinion.  You need to decide what compromise is best for YOUR playing enjoyment.

Your monitor's refresh rate should be set as high as it will allow for whatever your screen resolution is.  If you set it at 1024x768 and 85hz is the highest the refresh rate will go, then set it at 85.  If you choose a higher resolution, the maximum refresh rate might drop to 75, or even 60.  The actual frames per second you can view on your monitor are limited to whatever your refresh rate is.  That number is how often your screen is "repainted" every second.  It literally is your fps.  No matter what your video card says it is putting out, you can never view more fps than your refresh rate.  Thats why you want it set as high as possible.

In your video settings for Aces High, you can preload textures to system memory (although if you choose to use the High Rez textures, you probably will not have the option to do this).  Do NOT preload anything to video memory.  Do not preload skins.

In your video card's setup, set Anisotropic Filtering (AF) to "application preference".  AntiAliasing (AA) for max performance should be set to "application preference" also.  But if you choose not to use High Rez textures in Aces High, I'd bump this up a couple of notches.  Aces High will use the basic 2x setting I believe.  AA reduces the jagged lines in your screen picture.  Thats more important to me than a few rivets visible on the wings.  Again though, play with it and see where you get acceptable eye candy vs performance loss in your fps.  Set your "Vsync" or "Vertical Sync" or whatever its called in your setup to "ON".

Have fun.  :)
Title: nearly same machine
Post by: DFA on June 06, 2006, 02:32:38 PM
Im running a nearly identical machine to that here. 3GHz machine with 1GB of ram and the same X800 Video card. Im running the high res textures with anti alising and the works turned on with little to no issues. And this is even after the patch were many seem to be having some video issues. My average frame rates in a very heavy furball low to the deck hover around 40 to 60. That being said the machine should be more than capable of handling AHII just has to be a setting out of wack somewhere.

Did you actually go and download the high rez textures, or did you just set the max texture size to 1024 in the video setup?

Yes I downloaded them. Ive been running on the high res for quite a long time now. I wouldnt run the game on any less now that I am using a projection system to play on. Would hate to imagine what it looks like with lower res graphics lol.

Maybe its different with projection, but I honestly cant tell a difference in most planes between 1024 and 512.  Except less load that is.

Blow it up onto a 120" diagonal screen and you can see the differences. Most people out there are only playing on 21" to 17" monitors. But at 120" defects really stand out so the cleaner you can get the graphics the better.

oh but at 120" its so fun.... Hard to describe other than in a darkend room you take away all points of reference and you actually sorta get the sensation of flight. Ive already made a couple friends totally airsick lol.
Title: High-Rez!
Post by: bandit752 on June 07, 2006, 09:11:11 AM
Thank you all for the feedback!
I adjusted the settings per evrybodys recommedations here!!
I big setting to make a different was the 85MhZ on the monitor!
I saw the frames shoot up to 101!!! but during a heavy battle it drops to
a average of 60-75 frames!!!

Question about the HIGH_REZ package! If I wanted to try AH without the HIGH_REZ would have I to download the regular package and re-install!
and How do you know whihc package you are using! Because I first had downloaded the regular package then I downloaded the HIgh-REZ pack???

Thanks again! Things getting better! Score going up!

Most everyone that I know using ATI cards, use Omega drivers ....

I purchased the card from ebay and didnt get the disks with the card!
I was directed to sapphire web site and loaded the drivers and Catayst software from there??

I could be using incorrect drivers?

I did a search on the omega drivers you suggested!!
I found a site http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Radeon_Omega_Drivers/1086739971/1

Can you suggest a site with the omega drivers, since you also have the x800 and the settings you have?????

Thanks

To be honest I tried the Omega drivers with my X800 and wasnt impressed. I used them with an older ATI card I had at one time because they worked better but with the X800 its native drivers seem to work better. I dont think the omega drivers covered everything the X800 is capable of and did little justice to what it can really do.

I am now seem to be stablized around the 50-60 frame mark when in
heavy dogfights! but of course, if i can do better then I would like to try it!
I still really dont know if I am using the high-rez pack or do I just have the 1024 on the regular pack?
How can you tell?

I had the same setup as you bandit , the best driver i found was the 4.12 omega driver . I had posted a driver comparison awhile ago and tested  different catalyst drivers and found that the omega was better . I'll have to search for that old post .

Can you update the driver from the control pane - display and then the update driver option or do you have to completely remove the driver
as posted with the un-install routine from ATI??

Don't forget things like the AH video options detail sliders, the level of detail and the distance sliders. The further they are to the left, the more they will task your fps. The default is about 2/3 to the right. I'd put them 1/3 to the right or in the middle, for a good mix between fps and quality.

follow an unistall routine , and use driver cleaner  its the best way . here are the instructions from driver cleaner i never do #1, 6,or 7  thou

   ATI:
   1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
   2. Remove ATI driver from add/remove programs then remove the control panel from add/remove programs
   3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
   4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
   5. Navigate to device manager->display adapter->uninstall and/or remove ATI display adapter but do not reboot
   6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
   7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
   8. Run Driver Cleaner
   9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
   10. Install the new drivers and control panel
