Having just watched Trading Places again, I'm thinking it's time for a O'Club stock market game.
So I first want to guage whether or not there's interest in doing this. It could only be a couple of people, or it could be a runaway success.
If we do decide to do this, we need to figure out some things. First, where should we play?
I just came across http://www.virtualstockexchange.com/Game/Homepage.aspx .
I'll set up the game wherever. The question is, How much money to start? How long of a timeline? Should people be allowed to join after the start?
So, who wants in?
-
maybe... depends on the time frame...
-
Sounds like a big waste of time...I'M IN! :)
-
I'm in, but only if I get to pick Exxon/Mobil and Haliburton.
-
I'm in this could be a riot:rofl
-
I want Enron.
I dont understand the stock market enough to compete with you elders.
-
Did someone say a complete waste of time?
I'm in.
-
Oh what the hell
-
I'm a sucker for these kinds of things. IN!
-
I know nothing about stocks... IN!
-
OK.....but what's a "guage"?
-
Alright boys and girls. Sign up at http://www.virtualstockexchange.com . Click on "Find a Game." The game's name is "AcesHigh" (no spaces). The password for the game is "Mustang". "LaLa" was too short. Starting coinage will be 100k, and the game will run for roughly a month.
The game kicks off on the June 12.
The winner gets to keep the sheep.
What the winner does with the sheep, is none of our damn business.
One quick question of order though. Should I make it so that all portfolios are public to everyone? Or private?
-
open. this way we can ridicule each other while the game runs.

Woohoo! I'm tied for 1st!
-
I wont beable to finish the game seeing that I leave July 11th for bootcamp. But Il beable to last awhile. Do yall mind if I still join?
-
of course not. maybe both of us will learn something.
:)
-
Go for it. You can buy good stocks and let the results ride out the last couple of days.
Don't worry, if you win we'll ship the sheep to your camp. I'm sure your DI will love that.

In.... 15 there now.
This should be fun & educational. I don't know anything about the stock market and I suck at money, but....
....I didn't know anything about Diplomacy either, and after that experience I can safely say that I could probably handle ruling the world no sweat.
-
When does this thing start.
Been trying to by Victoria Secrete stock but i cant find a purchase area.
-
Heh. Ditto. I was too trusting and tried to believe that I could be honorable to people. I held off for a while, but I got bit in the ass. Did survive to the end though. Tried to organize the anti-russia campaign, but no one followed my orders.
Anyway, I think I've played a stock market game three or four times. Each time I started with 100k, and ended with 60k.
The game starts the 12th. Next monday.
-
I play on the real stock market and on a game at the same time. Both are thrilling. I do take more risks on the game, but some time this summer I will be going more over to the higher risk stocks and on the NYSE.
I am starting to make more than just token gains in the real market, and if I can continue to do this well I may do it in more serious fashion. Its ok for the missus too as long as I can keep her convinced that I know what im doing. :D
The stock games are real good for training purposes, and this one sounds good cause it may give me more experience trading in the US. (provided the game is as good and accurate as the norwegian one)
-
Count me in on this one
-
What the heck, I'm in. :) This should be fun.

I joined up too...what do I have to lose...

So when is the "Brewster's Millions" contest....see who the first one is to loose 1 million dollars on the stock market the quickest...lol
-
I'm trying to read up on this stuff, so that my squandering of a hundred grand in record time will at least be somewhat based on informed decisions....
.... but I don't even know where to start. It all sounds like "mee ho mah bok ding cow pung."
And I'm picturing myself on Monday morning when the market opens, going "duhh.... 50 grand on IBM or something?"
Are there other people playing here who are in as rough a shape as me?
What are you doing to bone up on this thing?
-
absolutely nothing... I'm counting on beginners luck.
-
There is one person I'll be turning to. He has his own TV Show. I'm going to be playing off of his suggestions.
27 People signed up so far. Very nice. The game will remain open after the start as well. However, there will be no resetting your money. I.E. If you're down 80 grand, you can't just hit a button and suddenly have 100k again.
-
This person on TV - might he be a little "Mad" with lots of butttons ????
I was thinking on seeing if he was right with some of it.
-
No, it was actually MTV's Pimp My Ride. I was going to invest heavily in any of the name brands they use to make a car useless.

Yeah.... that guy....
I was telling a girl I work with about signing up for this game, and she said she'd lend me a book he'd written that supposedly is a big help in getting to understand this stuff.
Before I bother reading it, is this guy a complete whackjob? Or is his advice generally sound?
-
As good as any. Personally, I like The Motley Fool
http://www.fool.com
If you really want to get into stocks for real, this is as good a time as any, and alot better than it has been. Tech stocks are earning more now than they did during the dot.com boom in the 90s. Many are still undervalued and are getting ready to explode. Not just tech stuff, but all across the board you have companies that are jumping into the 21st century with both feet and not looking back. In the next year things like Tivo and sattelite radio are going to absolutely go crazy. The key is knowing when to get rid of stuff like that. I lost my prettythang during the last crash. Tied too much of my 401k to stocks and lost big. But things are really looking up now.
A subscription to the Wall Street Journal doesnt hurt either. An e-subscription is 5 bucks a month and gives you access to all their investor info plus all the articles in the paper version. Some of their archive stories cost, but 99.9% of what I want is covered by my $5. Just a thought.
-
WOOO IN!
-
Nash, if you check out his website, there's a link to another website which keeps track of the stocks that Cramer suggests and how well they do. I'm going to try following his advice, just to see where it goes.
I can't find the website right now. Searching the internet with a 56k is a PITA.
-
Any chance of moving the start date up to the 10th?.... I'll be on the road next week to DC.
-
Cool - I'm gonna check it out. Thanks for the tips!
-
Here is a site that recaps his show each day.

Not sure the details of how the game works, but can you open the game on sunday, that way I can place my orders for exection first thing Monday? That is if they'll allow stuff like that.
-
Well, the opening date is set in stone. I cannot change it at all. Plus I wouldn't be able to change it to sunday anyway. The game has to start and finish on a trading day.

-
I'm paralyzed.... I have no fricken idea what to buy. Market seems to be tanking.
Waffle, what's the process in buying short?
-
$2.00 min?
-
Ya got a hundred grand - why would you want to spend less than 2 bucks on something?
-
buy something that you think will tank....lol
you make money when it falls - then when it falls enough - then buy to cover.
-
I made two trades but I don't see them in my portfolio?
-
takes about 5-10 mins to show up - if you're selling short - it wont go through untill theres an uptick in the price. That prevents folks from dumping stocks that are falling.
-
Selling short? Nm, don't explain, I don't know, but I bought something damnit, and I want it now!

Isn't that the point of shorting - to dump stocks when they fall?
And what's the process in "buying to cover?"
Sorry for the dumb questions.... I'm a newb.

waffle, i want a stock thats @ 16 and do a buy when it hits 10. how would i set that in VSE's trade window?
-
What's a day order?
-
select "sell short" - enter shares. If you want to buy it now - click market price. Make that a day order (processed asap) Then set another order - buy - same stock - same amount of shares - set limit price...enter how much you want to pay to buy it back. make the buy order good untill cancelled.
Nash - if a stock is steadily tumbling and folks are buying - there will be an "up-tick"...if the stock is plumbitting and everyone selling - theres no way to get in on a short sell, unless you catch it before it bottoms out - or if people show interest in the stock and it moves up a bit mid fall.
-
I think Waffle is a Ringer!:noid

thanks, thought there would be a way to do it in 1 order that i was missing.
kind of weird we can see what each other is buying.
BTW dont pay attention to my trades, just testing the waters for the first week to get a feel for the system :p

Thanks Waffle! That makes a bit more sense to me.

they were right! :D

Hey hey, go Waffle! Up 2k so far today lol. Waffle is the man to beat it seems. :)

Looks like we have several late starters. At least they'll get some interest on their money.

Easy come, easy go. ;)
Takes 20-30 mins to process an order.

I did the order over an hour ago

There are big winners and big losers on the first day alone. Waffle is up a couple grand. But Fury is down 4,200 after 12 transactions.
Btw, it keeps track of how many transactions you have. Everyone who doesn't make one is not in the running.

thats where investing in Pfizer and Merck will get ya :p not that i am anything to talk about rofl.
GRRRRR  :furious market closed, 1 1/2 hour ago all of my stocks were "up" and was in 2nd place.
-
Funny, I thought Sirius was my biggest gamble, but while it finished down for the day it wasnt bad. And I bought twice as much of it as I did the more expensive stocks. I expect it to come up tomorrow.
My biggest loss for the day was Ebay, and I expected it to be pretty steady. Go figure.
Biggest gain for the day was the one I expected to be the slowest gainer, Coke. It almost offset all my losses on the other stocks by itself. I expected it to do well, but this was a surprise.

waffle made all his money early today selling short on sirrus, looks like he is just straight out buying it now though. bummer he was up 4 grand 1/2 hour to market close.
-
lol - figured I buy long for the rest of the day... ooops.
Ah well they're supposed to be dropping some investor info tomorrow. will see what happens. Think folks get nevvous before releases..lol

you miss market close too waffle? lol i was going to place a few orders rigth before myself, but i forgot it was eastern time zone based :cry
i gotta ask Sixpence, whats with the domtar investment? myself being in the printing business in a small way, i know what is going on with the paper industry lately, and with all the production decreases and price hikes the paper market looks a bit shakey right now. just a curious buy, you know something most don't?

Thats what I figured. Plus it was cheap enough, and everybody is talking about how Sirius is way undervalued right now. Supposedly its going to be a rocket over the next year. That doesnt help right now though lol.

Fury sucks. He thinks by watching CNBC before work he's got the inside scoop. He picks stocks by their cool acronyms rather than what industry they are in or how they perform. He's obviously got no clue what's going on.
He's gonna jump out a window if (I mean when) he loses everything.
.....but at least he's 34th of 35 instead of at the bottom! (that's for tomorrow)
-
Not sure what happened with mine.. it still says the transaction pending...
-
I'm barely in the black. Have a few sell short orders in for opening tomorrow morn. Those don't go well I'll likely visit position 35.
-
Gold
Internet
Cola
Electricty
My investments. Once my last transaction goes through tomorrow morning I be 3 grand in debt until something start paying off.
-
My funds are sittin' on their ass. I'd be better off at 4%. They're outta there tomorrow.
-
I can get rid of the 2 dollar minimum if you like. Though it might be too late, I'm not sure.
Fifty cent minimum?
Btw, I just placed 5 orders, all buying orders for the morning. Prepare to watch me make millions.

Neat game, I just signed up

Cola - Good choice.
Gold - Sucks prettythang right now.
If you buy enough Coke, it might offset the rest. :)
-
LOL, missed today because of work and I'm in 2nd. I r teh jeanieus.
-
Hehe, you wound up in the same spot as me...
I was totally prepared....
I got 3/4 of the way through Jack Cramer's 'Real Money' this weekend, I've been scouring the internet for info (theStreet, Motley etc.), I threw on CNBC as soon as I woke up this morning.....
I WAS READY TO GO!
But.... Nothing made sense. Totally frustrating. Everything looked like complete ass. There was no way I was going to touch anything today. In all likelihood it's gonna be two or more weeks before I take the plunge.
I'll gladly take the meager interest on my cash for the time being. :)
-
I've got a trade set for tomorrow's opening bell. We'll see what it does.
This is definitely going to be an interesting game with the crapper the market is heading down. I'm betting it's going to be small unknown stocks that get any significant gains this month.
-
As of right now, I'm up 544 bucks from all the stocks I bought this morning.
-

Like me , because of another worlkoad increase I'll be unable to play ...
-
"Btw, it keeps track of how many transactions you have. Everyone who doesn't make one is not in the running."
Is that a rule?
The game gives you interest on cash balances. Surely not trading and collecting interest is a valid tactic?
-
I'm waiting for about 2 weeks into it. That should put the people that are not-so-good well at the bottom of the totem pole. Then it's a fun game of high-risk catchup with the leaders.
Hell, it's not my money :)
-
The market is a mess right now. I'm not buying squat until things calm down.
I'd like to put some funds into bonds or govt T-Bills or even on deposit but the only option is to buy stock.
-
Hell I forgot it started and was trying to get on to buy some Intel stock just now and my net connection hammered into the ground. It looks like a good deal.
-
My two best stocks so far are beer and drugs:rofl now I need to invest in a potato house and a rockstar:aok
-
btw, I registered with my wow alias, ironious
-
Finally got Intel, AMD, Merck and Fox News. So we will see what is happening over the next few days.
-
You guys should be glad its only a game... the last 3 days have been hell on earth for me in real trading :(
Started to climb abit before end of trading today so hopefully that trend continues tomorrow and beyond. Numbers in the US are looking up and Europe responded well before closing.
Total losses so far are just under 8000 USD but I have gotten some cheap stock today so...
After beeing well on the plus side after i started my daytrading ventures in early may i am now total just over 2000 in red. Many have done far worse.
-
Yeah i listened to the radio this morning. While i was driving to work. I thought they were talking in Code or something.:huh So i turned it off and listened to some music.
But if you See i am making a come back today. Maybe the Moble home doesnt need to go up for sale yet!:aok
-
hehe keep your mobile home and sell your regualar... that way you can flee the creditors while staying in relative comfort :D
-
OK, made a couple trades on declining stocks I think will rebound in a week or so. National Oilwell Varco (NOV) is an oilwell service company and is sliding fast. I may have jumped the gun on that one, but it will rebound within 30 days. The other is Symantec (SYMC). It's down slightly, but had some good news yesterday and should gain. I should have bought Maverick Tube this morning.
I have about 50% of my money tied up right now. Time to sit back and watch it run.:D
-
I put a couple high sell limits on two of my stocks. They both sold rather decently and then went back down.
One of my remaining 3 stocks is sticking up there. However, the other 2 are dropping despite rather good news and press releases. I think I might hold onto them.
-

Also, since this is not real money, and saving will not actually get you anything, WE won't count anyone who doesn't make any transactions. If you lose all this money, you aren't screwed in real life, so the game will be won by someone playing aggressively, or smart.

If there are 20 players and 19 of them lose a bunch of money trading aggressively but one makes money by being conservative and earning interest isn't the one guy playing smart?

Yes. But right now the market is simply reacting to interest rate worries and inflation concerns. Betting on whether something goes up or down is basically a crap shoot in that environment.

Interesting that 11 of the top 12 have not made a transaction.
Proof that a penny saved is interest earned I guess.
-
I bought some, but I am working when the market is open. Guess I will get some tonight and hope for the best
-
a penny saved is a lot more than a penny earned
penny saved is tax free, maybe about $0.02, maybe more
-
It costs 1.23 cents to make a penny and 5.7 cents to make a nickle.
-
I think it's illegal, but when the change on my dresser accumulates to an unmanageable level, I pick out the quarters, hold up a grocery bag to the side of the dresser, and sweep all that crap into a bag and toss it out.
My rationale is that if you added up all those pennies and nickels, you couldn't even use it to cover the cost of having someone else deal with it.
So why should I? :D
-
Just take the bag to a Coinstar machine and dump it.
-
Hmm... We don't have those here. I just looked it up - it'd be nice.
I'm not sure it would even cover my gas or time to go that route, but at least I wouldn't be breaking any laws.
They really oughtta ditch the penny and the nickel.... Those things are a hassle more than anything. If retailers rounded everything up by a few cents I wouldn't lose any sleep.

A couple of years ago I had a change jar that had accumulated quite the collection of quarters, dimes, nickles and pennies. It weighed a TON. I took it to my credit union (they'll sort it and cash it for free). I was expecting 25, maybe 30 bucks back. When the teller came back with the receipt she said, "And how would you like your $88.45?"
CHA-CHING!!!!
That's a lot of tamales, yo.

You can use them as revenge on annoying store or bank clerks. At least here they must accept payments in any kind of legal currency, so people have been known to use bags full of cent coins to protest what they considered unfair charges, fees, etc...

I have a jarrrr that we put in the nursery when Mia was born. When its full of change and buttons we take it to the bank. When she eventually turns 18 she should have abit.
anyways.. markets are slowly up so far after 30 mins of trading. its not up much so i belive it will continue up slow today and not the yoyo stuff that has been going on lately. my portfolio is up 1,17%
-
wow.. nice start over in capitalist country! :)
-
THAT IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!:furious
Time to get my Banker/money manager involved. :t
-
Boy, all three of my origanal investments took a nosedive. Losing my thousands a day. Took a lose and got my money back.
-
I did somthing today that i normally dont do.. I sold a stock at a great loss. I then bought some other stock in PDR just before the numbers from the US came in.
I ended the day up 6% and im in the black again if only by a mere 0,5%. Yay OIL! :)
This means that over the last month I have beaten the marked and made money while the market is down a total of 12 % since may 11.
-
I was going to sell all the AMD stocks...than in the morning I read something about their new processor getting certified by novell...or smthng. So I held onto them..now they`re making money..yesterday they were down almost $1000
:)
-
I suck horribly at this stuff. In fact, I should invest in real oil right now and within a week I'm pretty sure that the market will reach its lowest level of the decade.
But reading this thread is great fun. You wannabe Rockefellers crack me up :lol :aok
-
You guys that play that game try this...
When you get close to closing time at the exchange buy afew in the share that has gone down the most that day and see what happens the following day.
You will make money.
I do it, but since its real money i dont always have free capital. I would say it works 75% of the time. Make sure you have the time to place a sell order before it closes tho. The stock has prolly been specualted in and the pros and funds will make it rise in the moring just so they can dump it at a profit.
-
Just did that actually Nilsen. Since it's not my money, I grabbed 75k in stocks on Bayer. Was down -7.45% when I picked it up. iirc, they just chased Merck out of a takeover deal on another company. It's at 37.90, but had a 52wk hi of 46.62 (last month) & a 52wk low of 32 (last year). I think it's got a 70/30 chance of making at least 1 or 2 bucks per share. Just have to keep sitting on it now that I'm comitted.
-
Today looks good so far!
-
9 out of the top 10 players are those who risked themselves and bought stock.
I was down at the end of yesterday, but some of my stocks rebounded. Others are taking a nosedive. I'm going to hold onto the flaming lala headed for the dirt at Mach 2 because I believe it's going to go up.
-
I've switched ranks with Laser & Vort 5 times in the last hour so far. :lol
-
I think Reschke holds the record. He went from number 3 down to 30 yesterday, and is now back in the top 5.
Just call him Yo yo. :)

If it nosedives and you belive in it then sell and you should be able to pick it up again at an even lower price.

Golly-geen you and your logic!
What's the command to buy something at a low price?

No were on the internet were you can see how much stock costs? just pick the one with the highest loss that trading day. Usually looks like this
-7.89% or a completly different number. Just scroll down the list until you find it. ;)
-
lol, looks like those haliburton stocks are paying off...
-
LOL - I'm about piseed at my online broker...
Placed a sell order at 2:15pm by their time stamp...price was at the limit I set...20 mins later - still didn't sell it...
Now the stuff it didn't sell is dropping again..grr....lol

If the game features "order depth" then your order prolly was too far back in the line to kick in at the price you wanted.
-
Now I'm really po'd...
Cancel the sell order cause I'd figure I'd wait it out. - game ended up selling it anyway. about 30 mins after i cancelled the order.
I was gonna stick to riding small waves on one stock and could've made about 3k today over the course of 4-5 trades...buy - ride a 2cent long - sell / sell short...buy to cover back when it dropped 2-5 cents...
If they would execute as the normally would...lol I'd be just fine... :D
-
Do you have to cover your magin by the close of trading in this game?
If so, a bunch of you have 4 minutes left
If not... I think I just screwed myself.
-
EDIT: Hang on. Seems that its still adjusting. I may have made a profit overall today...hmm
-
I've been waiting about 4 hours for 1 transaction...
-
I think it has to do with whether or not you put "Day Order" instead of "Good until Cancelled." Good until Cancelled will push it through ASAP. Day order will buy it at the end or beginning of the day.
As a measure of sheer desperation, I asked my sister for a couple of stock tips. Those stocks are up 650 bucks, while the two I'm hoping will raise (which did finish much higher today) are down on me for 300 bucks.
-
Ahh, I see now that I didn't select GUC, darn.
-
Cool. Seems that its settled out now. I made $300 dollars today. My first profit. I dumped all my origanal investmetns and found three that turned out to all make me money today.
-
a day order will cancell itself out at the end of the trade day. good till cancelled will stay valid until you cancel it - which could be 2 days or 2 months depending on the price you set.
I got hosed again - 15 mins before close I placed a straight buy order...
never went through...lol
-
I'm pretty sure the game tells you there's at least a 20 minute delay. Most of my orders have been going through in 20-25 minutes.
Also, big props to Tufnuts. He made 3,300 dollars in one day.
-
DAMN IT i buy caterpiller today, it was dropping all day so i short sell it. Now it is up 1.15. Who the hell started buying Caterpiller
Stupid Game:cry
Any body want my stock of Caterpiller :)
-
Hi guys, I just signed up today. I don't really know anything about the market, but I thought it would be fun. Got Lucky on my first day.. have to see how it goes from here.

no wonder it went up. they just introduced a new flux capacitor.

Whats the capacity of the capacitor?

depends on the input vs output throughput

Ahh, well put.

I did good, I made a little over $1000 in just 20% of my stocks, so I came ahead today

I wish we weren’t limited to buying stocks that are at least $2.00 a share… I was all set to buy 400,000 shares of something!
-
Hah, I see Indy went my route with CASY. It began to droop this morning... so I sell my share and it rockets.
Bastige !

You've made some amazing calls, Octavius. Where do you find out about this stuff?
-
So i thought of an idea. I would get a 12 pack of beer, sit down watch MSN with Jim Cramer.
Thought i would get the edge on you guys, and be finally in the plus.
After 20 minutes of what he was watching his show. I was like
WUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:huh
-
Im watching Kramer now....lol.
-
Heh, I did the same thing yesterday....
I opened up Wordpad, typed in every company he mentioned, and put a "y" or an "n" beside each one, based on what he said.
I ended up with a list of about 15-20 companies.... with only about 7 "y's."
I checked 'em all out, and still wasn't comfortable about betting on them. I think only one, maybe two of those companies ended up making any money today.
I can't wait to join the game... but jesious... it's crazy right now. The trend in our game is basically; if you're at the top you're only up 2-3 points, and if you're at the bottom, you're down 10. Everyone else is spread across that field, with most in the red.
At least I know more about the terms "correction," "bottom," and "adjustment" than I did before.

Im only down 9 grand. :p
Stupid gold...
-
I think the problem is that some people panic when something goes wrong. We're coming into day 3 of our game, and people have made a lot of transactions.
3 Days in and someone has made over 30 transactions *COUGH MACMAW COUGH*. And looking towards the bottom of the rankings (hehe) I see 49 Transactions for DJ111, 64 for jebus (i'm actually impressed), and 38 for Fury.
-
im in no hurry. Theres 2 that I have that dropped everal percentage points, but I know that they will rebound. When the markey opens tomorrow I will do some tidying up
-
If I hadnt dropped my origanal 3 I would have been down about 20 grand as of today.

I won't lie. I saw it on your portfolio, it looked good, so I bought it. :D It saved me from a small hit I took on Apple & Amazon. I geuss I jumped in too late after Apple's announcement it had replaced beer as the #1 must-have on college campuses. Oh well, tommorrow is another day... and I'm unloading CASY first thing :)
-
64 that is nothing. I didnt know what have the stuff ment on the first day. On the second day i was at work. Today I made some really stupid moves.
As you can see i have no patience. I need to work on that with the stock market. My friends is a portfolo manager for a bank and she is laughing at some of the stupid stuff i did.
Like i said i didnt know what i was doing.
I thought Baxter, abbot, and Exxon would bring me to the win. Well i would have been golden if i kept them and didnt short sell them on the first day.
-
Remember Jebus, every transaction costs you a commission fee. 64 transactions at 29.95 each, means you put $1916.80 in commission alone. That is more then half of the money you are down from 100,000.

chaos theory, strange attractors, pi :D
I surfed around for an hour or two one night. Looked up random companies in every industry and glanced at their performance and charts. I had a good feeling about a few, so I went for it. I gambled on Home Depot... thinking Alberto might cause some damage, but that failed and I sold it after a few cents gain Tuesday morning. For some reason I saw some northern iron company and bought some. Absolutely no idea where CASY came from. I think it was some random financial website, motley fool or thestreet.com...
shrug... I see a graph, I go back a few months, years, maybe a decade. If it feels right I go for it ;) check the trends, check the news and go nuts.

Yeah... out of everything I've learned and saw this last week, that seems to be as good a method as any.
I think I have to start trusting my insticts and just dive in.
-
I was off all day tuesday so I was able to make some trades. The rest of the week I have to place orders every night and pray . Overall i'm having a blast this was a great idea
I find my self logging out of AH2 every hour or so to check my portfolio:D :aok

If the major players over here are right and the bottom was finally reached yesterday im set to make a small fortune over the next couple of days. I have seldom read that all the analysts say the same thing at the same time including the usual pessimists.
The OBX index opens in 50 minutes at 342,12 points. At the peak on may 11th it was over 400.
I am spread out pretty good between oil and shipping plus one tech stock.
:)
-
Asia is up so i think they were correct. I now predict up across the globe from asia to europe and US.
My stocks are up 5,9% in 26 minutes of trading, and a total of 8,29% since yesterdays heavy purchase of PDR :)
-
I made $1500 in one day...why don`t I do the real deal?
...I`m sure I`d be losing big, as I know my luck

Thats what i said until may 11th.. then I started doing the real deal. Your first deal is nervewrecking but then it gets easyer. Just mak sure you dont forget that its real money you are loosing/making. Its no longer just numbers on a screen that you can walk away from.
The day I started was the peak... the market has gone down quickly ever since then and until now.
-
is the stock thing broke? My orders have been sitting there in pending status now for an hour.
Mac
-
no kidding -
I placed some orders prior to open - over 20 mins after open still "pending". They were set to execute at market value too....lol
Now I'm scared to see what I've lost :)
nm- just kicked one through -25 mins after open..lol
so much for this snipe trade...no way to make a few quick bucks on a quick shift in price :(
-
So far im up 4 grand today. Mmm seeing these numbers in green...what is that...
It probally wont last.
-
I think it will last blue.
I predict a slow recovery all over as of today.
-
Nilsen...why aren't you playing in this game man? You seem pretty interested in it. Just jump in.
I am playing, although I used a "shades" account initially to protect my anonymity in case I tanked....but frankly...bah...who cares, it's just a game. I'm not a trader...I'm a bean counter. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;)
I am Master Bates.

Anybody else wishing they had Meatwad's portfolio right now?
I took a gamble and sank alot into stocks that were at 52wk lows. I don't think they can go much lower. Hopefully by this afternoon, or in a few days, it'll pay off.

I am in the real market Curval. When summer is over I plan to carefully enter the US market too so I will play the game abit before then. Right now im full up with enjoying my holiday and focusing on the Oslo exchange.
This is how my main stock has fared today. I bought yesterday at 2.40

I just bought some just after they dropped sharply this morning, so maybe here in a few days they should jump up some and I make a profit. Im still trying to figure this stuff out.
The more you get, does that give you more equity to buy on? Is it good to buy on equity?
-
My 49 Transactions were mostly from day 1, I keep going back and forth between 30th-25th though.

wow thats a nice sum :)
I have just over 40000 USD to "play" with. I have half that in the market and the rest sitting there collecting regular interest and available if i come across any very cheap stock.

yup. I think I hit a few goldmines today :D

You'd be green the whole time if you hadn't spent $1500 on trade commissions so far =P

Movin on up! :D

Bah
:p

Trade comissions sucks. if it wasnt for them i could make more trades and more money on smaller changes in the market.
One trade here costs 79NOK. thats about 12 USD. if you only buy one lot at a time you need relativly large changes to make money, but you loose with ease.
-
Would be nice if trades were quicker.

Mine to. They must update the server at the same time and the orders go through at the same time.

I had read a story a week ago about Verasun coming out this week, and I had planned to buy stock, figuring it would take off. It did. I got a late start because I'm so far behind the rest of you time-wise. Then for some reason it never took my order, and it didnt show up on my screen until today. Now I'm over 200 bucks in the hole because of this stock that dropped back down 10% after a hot first day. When it wasnt there yet at the end of trading yesterday I tried to cancel it but didnt see it. I thought I had dodged the bullet and it didnt go through. Stupid me. LOL
-
If its that buggy you will loose interest pretty soon. Maybe there are better games out there.
-
Some folks are going to make some money on the London exchange with EADS after the A380 news - lost 38% on the news and went back over 7 % today .
Aviation business  so news sensitive. BAe systems did the same a few years ago - went down 50% on bad news of Nimrod and gained it all back in 6 months.
-
Yeah, but I count on it being sensitive. The airlines are no different. I'm doing pretty well on niche airlines right now. My railroad investments are doing well too. Those should start falling within a couple weeks, I just hope I can get out on the top of the arc. :)
-
you think the avaition business is sensitive?!?

Working good for me so far. Longest transaction I've had is 23 minutes to complete. I dumped Toyota this morning... thought it'd go up with their euro sales announcement.. it was gone in 10 minutes. I doubt KT, which I've got 15% of my equity in is gonna rebound any time soon. Hope it does before end of the month :(

No freaking clue what I am doing...LOL...So, it's no wonder I am losing my assss....LOL

So far I'm still making money....so who wants to let me try it with their real money?:lol

Today ended well. :) Would have been better without Verasun dragging me down, but I'll live with it and hope it comes back up.

My ranking is up and down like a bride's nightie.

I've had a great day today - don't know how or whether it will last but I'm not complaining. Got one that is big negative but I'm hoping some news on Monday will turn it round and another that is tying up capital and I can't sell (?)
See what tomorrow brings.

I'm thinking about getting some tips from Meatwad though...7.3% in a day? If he keeps that up no-one is gonna touch him. Loooong way to go though.

I just happen to got lucky today. Really all I been doing is spending a little time on research and buy low/sell high
-
verasun :(
google :D
-
It was a good day for most people. I leave for the day and hear the dow went up 200 points. I made a lot of money, yet I drop down 4 or 5 places in the rank. Come back and I've made over 2 grand. Of course, some people here made much much more. Meatwad made 7 grand today.
I believe there is not a single person who hasn't invested in the top 25.
Though, some of us aren't so lucky. Maybe it's just a glitch, but I believe that one of Fury's companies went out of business. He lost 16 grand on that. However, all of his other stocks went up 1,500 today. I'll check to see if it is a glitch.
Maybe it's a glitch on the VSE's end. Fury has 110 shares of a ticker of WLS which he bought at 147.15 . The current value for WLS is 0, and no online business site knows the "WLS" ticker.
-
I think I wont stay in first for too long. I work most open stock days and I am unable to get to the PC at all so I just have to buy/sell and hope for the best. Today I was able to do some watching while the market was active and hit the ones that looked best for a return
edit
I just sold a few of my stocks that looks like they will start dropping tomorrow. I made just over a grand on them two so its safe to dump em and find a new prospect to use. The rest I have seem safe for another day and may bring in more returns
-
I still don't understand these:-
Sell Short
Buy to Cover
Can someone explain in idiots language what these two phrases mean in the trading drop downs......
thanks
-
Note to self: when a public company threatens to buy back all it's stock and go private, don't hedge bets. WLS was doing great two days ago, then the stock got frozen because the majority stockholder was going trying to buy back all the stock. Some other business was trying to fight that.....I should have known better, but I was hoping it might open back up.
The only glitch is in my head :P
WLS still existed at noon today when I checked LOL. Apparetnly they were successful in going private.
-
In reality if the delisting was successful as a result of a buy up in shares you would have sold your shares. So, whatever was the offer price on them when it happened should be added to your cash balance imho.
-
Wow... I'm finally in the green again.
-
My main stock (PDR) is up another 7% this morning
It has now gone up 18% since i bought it 2 days ago. That is 1700$ profit in 2 days. I have a sell order in at 3 (bought at 2,4)
Not bad for paying attention for a couple of days.

lasersailor184 why was I reset to 100,000?
Mac
-
Mac...you seem to have a bunch of trades pending. Dunno what happened though.
I am all over the place...started out at 16th spot, checked and saw I was in 7th and now I'm at 10th. Gonna be an interesting day.
-
The market is going nuts. I started up 3.79%. Was at .2% net within 10 minutes. Now I keep fluctuating an +- 2% every minute.
-
Just hang in there. I still stand by what i said yesterday. Markets will go up. Its just a matter of a few days for the market to agree on were its going. Some pessimists are still holding it back, but there really are no good reasons for it.

Not so much pessimists today, it quadruple options expirations so the market is going to be trading heavy today. I do think we've seen a short term bottom though these past few days.
-
WTH? I'm trying to dump these dogs I bought and it doesn't even show a pending trade. This is going to get ugly.
-
Seems like when I cancel a order it is ignored and put through faster. lol.
-
Yeah, the website is moving real slow today.
-
FMCN is a real gainer today. They are issuing another chunk of stock out on the market and it was gaining again up nearly $6.00 a share from opening this morning.
-
Its early yet but Ive lost almost everything I made yesterday. DOH!
-
Meatwad- been a roller coaster between me and you today...
-
The market is open monday through friday right?
-
ok, Im in.
-
Tough day...
-
I've got a stock that shows it closed at 14.40, but the game says 13.90. Shenanigans!
and Oracle sucks.
-
damn...I took the lead!! and I haven`t even got the slightest idea what I`m doing.
-
Not too bad here - came back from rough start - was down about %3 Wednesday. Made back about 6.5 percent thursday and today to be around %3.5 in the green. All on one stock :)

Not once but twice! I signed on and It'd didn't have what I closed with Thursday. Instead it had me as if I first joined the game. WTF am I doing something wrong? And it took well over 20 minutes to get a buy or sell confirmed....
Really sucked today.
Mac
-
Mac..are you signing in each time? I just had it "remember me".
I've noticed a few glitches with the site when you do repetitive type clicking about. For example, I went to try and check out each person's portfolio starting from the top ranked player down. After a while it just stopped working when I tried to view the person's holdings. It seemed to get slower and slower up to that point. I had to shut down my browser to get it working again.
Maybe it's just glitches on the site?
-
LOL! And it is so! I just got (and continue to get) this error when trying to access our game homepage:

I don't know what's up for you people, my orders go through quickly.
Also, MacMaw, I have no idea what's happening to your account. I don't have the power to reset accounts, nor do you have the power to do it accidentally yourself.
However, I do have the power to delete accounts... :t

-
lmao - i saw that!
-
Looks like they got his Market Value and his Gain/Loss mixed up.
Tough luck :p
-
I made a few mistakes, got too greedy and instead of selling for a nice profit I let it ride and went into the negative by a few thousand. Time to redo my stocks before I lose some more.

You do know that buying stock based on news in the regular media is asking for trouble right? If you do so you are waaay behind others and you will prolly be the one they make money on.
-
LOL.. I put it all on my company... At least I'm not dead last.
ouch!

You guys are enough to cause a 2nd black tuesday.
I'm glad it's only virtual money :lol

I R confused....

All the numbers don't always update at the same time... or even correctly.
Took 3 days before the market value of one of my stocks was fixed. I show -$1000 until this morning. Then, just before the market even opened, I was $800 up on the same stock like I was supposed to be.

If the real stock market is like this Im not going anywhere near it.

Its not really, but you have to pay attention and focus on segment of the market that you know (or want to learn). Im guessing that most folks just buy on gut feeling, a brandname they know or some rumors a friend has told them.
You better learn about what all the numbers and names like "PE" etc mean and what they should tell you.
It really is a fulltime job, and it doesnt start or end when the bell at your respective exchange rings.
-
In my gain loss catagory Im down 10 grand. Todays return precentage is at 1 point something.
-
Boeing is bombing.
:cry
-
Well Nokia ended up with only a tiny little gain. I had every intention of dumping it earlier but had a meeting and missed the chance. I wish we could trade on the LSE though...especially after the meeting.:t
-
well, everything is down again except the beer comapny. not complaining about the oil though
-
I sold everything this morning and I ended the day in 3rd. I think I started in 2nd or 3rd anyway so guess its not all bad. I should have some good ones tomorrow
-
Today in email I got one of those junk mail 'stock tips' so I'm buying a few thousand shares and we'll see how badly I get scammed :-) Should be fun.
-
It will bottom out tomorrow...
-
That should be fun.
Then when you lose it, claim that you followed their stock tip and lost tens of thousands of dollars. Then threaten you are planning to sue them for your losses. Maybe you get a check for $$$
Say you had a "(AW)Mac attack" :D

I went from 7th on Tuesday to just trying to stay ahead of BlueJ1...39th now. But I have plans for tomorrow..Pork Bellies!!!!

As quoted by Neubob....
So much information for potential stock purchases flows through these boards, it's almost criminal.
Great now Neubob is gonna get us all busted.
FYI the Securities Commission does not consider this as "insider trading" with the recognition that neither of us are actually employed with the NYSE.
Stocks to watch.
CSCO, BBY, OII and HRLY... or if you have the time to massage IRSI.
HAL will be strong in the morning but Sell before 1pm EST.
Stay away from SUNW, MSFT, SI, NOK and ORCL...
INTC will be strong but only in the late hours of the afternoon.
Mac
-
You really have to watch this VSE thingy. I put in an order to sell short earlier and went to check it and my order said to "buy". Glad I checked that and hope to heck it cancels the previous order.
-
Nope...the stupid thing went ahead and bought stock I wanted to sell short. That really ticks me off.
...and the damn thing still shows my sell short order as pending.
nice.
-
lol The damn thing canelled my sell short order. So instead of making money I lost big time. Now wallowing at 25th place.
What a farce.:cry
-
SON OF A.........
Maybe I just don't freaking understand how this thing works. I am now showing another BUY when I tried to sell short.

I decided to just buy my own company's stock... so far I've lost 5.5k on them. Maybe I need to update the old resume'.

Today's return.
%7.02
HOLY SPIT!
Question, I think Im going to sell all and invest elsewhere. Or buy it all back when its low. Good idea?

LOL!! Touche.
You are quite right though...I am paid well to record transactions not make them.
I don't understand how this web site deals with selling short though. TWICE I put an order to sell short and the darn thing just bought the stock. I wanted to SELL not buy.
I am simply going to avoid trying it now.
Worked out okay in the end...I'm back in 10th place now after I dropped to 25th.

I'm ready to jump out a window. Good thing I live in a 1 story house.

Talk about trades that didn't go through.. I thought about placing a buy to cover last night...lol oops.

Anyone care to give a quick idiot proof explanation of what the terms 'sell short' and 'buy to cover' mean?
Someone else asked earlier in the thread, and I dont think it has been answered yet.
No clue what I'm doing, but I seem to be losing money at a steady rate.....just like real life :)

Selling short is what you do if you think a stock is falling, unlike trading long that means you take profit from a rising stock.
A short seller can borrow a stock and sell it, hoping that it will decrease in value so that they can buy it back at a lower price and keep the difference
-edit- to make sure nothing is lost in the translation i looked it up for you:
http://www.shortpicks.com/short_selling.asp
-
it`s ok BD. I ain`t got a clue what those are...look where I stand...
-
Thanks Nilsen,
Exactly what I was looking for, but was just to dumb to find apparently
Cal, I'll be happy if after the thirty days are up i still have the 100k after interest payments and stuff, profit would be a bonus, but I aint holdin my breath.
Youre up 12k or so right now, I wont get that kind of return until someone starts another war.
-
BTW, who manufactures small arms ammo for the US Army?
And who owns Colt Firearms?
I'm thinking the US and her allies are at war, whoever makes and supplies the 'consumable' stuff( ammo, weapons and components, boots, waterbottles, webbing, uniforms, etc) used by the western armies should be a pretty safe bet for the forseable future.
Probably unethical, immoral and plain old offensive to some, but hey, it's all proffitsssss.
Where would I go to research who the parent company supplying a certain good is?
-
Stupid thing cancelled my last order for some reason and my choice is up over 2% from when I put in the order.
I guess the oprice went up before they settled the trade and I didn't have enough cash. Just how one is supposed to manage that through this site I have no idea.

Nilsen, if you think your gains are small in your RL trading, you should read the article out today on daytraders in India. Some of these guys have to live off of what they make daily on the stock market, we are talking 10 to 15 bucks a day. They dont even own computers, they sit in Internet Cafe type places and make their trades all day.

I H-A-T-E this website! Had me at 43rd, 3rd then 45th all after trading ended. I put thru a market open order and it never happened. Wound up losing my arse about 20 min before the market closed while I was at work. If the sale had gone thru everything would have been rosey. Now I'm hanging out at the corner bumming change from strangers.

i just sold of a stock i bought a week back with 1316 USD profit. :)
im talking RL now :)
My drilling and exploration stocks are my big winners in RL. They are followed by dry bulk and then gas shipping. Crude tankers are more sticky. Technology have been my loosers mainly due to selling at the wrong time, but they usually are safe, but slow movers.
-
I hope yall read the news. If you plan on doing some medium-long term investments then go for oil and gas exploration companies.
a 25 year old american law that bans exploration for oil and gas on the west and east coast plus the eastern part of the gulf of mexico is going away.
I have just bougth stock in Global Geo Services (RL) that i will sit on for a few months.
-
Was a good day.

Reschke and I were swapping 6th & 7th place virtually all day. The day started out really well for me....then I made a mistake and bought a stock that didn't do what it was "supposed" to do...increase in price. ;)

Boy I screwed the pooch on one. Bought about 50% of my money in six flags when it dropped really low hoping it would climb.....nope it just kept falling. Lost $3,000 big ones to those tards. Next time I see that dancing old man he is gonna get a kick in the nuts
-
That dancing old man is a girl underneath the mask. Was on the news here awhile back. Slow day I guess..

Six Flags dropped because they are closing over half their parks to cut costs.

I saw that MT...you have the highest return today by far.
I made a HUGE mistake yesterday and decided to buy Nortel. NORTEL!!!??? WTF was I thinking? By the end of the day I went from 8th place to 28th place.
So, this morning I did the ONLY thing that could save me...I bought more Nortel.
lol
By doing so I lowered my cost base and then when it went up today I made back everything I lost and then some.
-
hmm anyone buy JCrew? 25% return so far on an ipo.
-
I just dumped all of my money and then some into one stock. Im either going to make a killing or lose it all. Either way Im happy that I went from last place to max out at 3rd.

I dumped all mine and put it into one stock GM:cry WTF was I thinking!.As you say its time to sink or swim :D

I'm still stinging from that $4 a share loss I took on 10,000 shares. Problem is now I have to make double the gains on smaller parcels. Looks like PD is making a nice comeback, might have some more gain left in it.
Come join me in the Loser's Lounge! (At least the beer is cold.)

Merck and Mcaffe have been treating me pretty good when the others start to tank...
-
I'm still eyeballing the jcrew (jcg) went up 25% percent...wondering if a short-sell is in order, or buy and hope it goes up another 25% tomorrow...
Actually - I'm hoping vonage tanks...lol :D
BTW -looks like Superfly got sucked into the game as well...lol
-
I had Merck until yesterday and they created a nice tidy little profit for me. I think I made a little over $2500vUSD in the week that I had it. It took a little dip then I dumped it and bought Alexza and am waiting that ride out.
I jumped on the J Crew IPO and made a little. I am riding it tomorrow to see what is happening. Another IPO I am watching is TWLL to see what happens in the morning.

hehe... looks like more people in RL took his advice. Those guys have alot of power, and they "prolly" use it to promote their own investments. :)

No, he just gave general advice, no specific companies were ever mentioned.

As long as I'm ahead of RPM I don't feel that "ReTarded"....
Just kiddin RPM.....

MT are you talking about Cramer? I've become hooked on Mad Money and started using some of his picks with good results. BOOYAH! Unfortunately most of his picks are going to take more than 30 days to show significant return.
Too bad this freakin game takes so long to put orders thru or I'd be sitting pretty after today. I put in a sell short order on NWRE before the market opened. It dropped $8 a share but I only caught the last dollar because it didn't put the trade thru for an hour after the open.
I'll catch ya Mac! If anything, this has been a real learning experience on trading.

Yeah if it was "Real" time trading.. I'd be kicking some butt!!!!! Hate sitting there and waiting, waiting, waiting.....pfffft.

look at saburo's 20% + today :O :cry

XING, for the most part has been very, very good to me :)
-
Yea, really nice job Saburo. Well done man! You can basically buy to cover and then make no trades for a while. It was a short sell that made you that if I recall. Not sure anyone's gonna be able to catch you.
The mighty Oct has slipped a bit. Still, being no.1 for so long is tough to maintain.
I must say this whole thing has been quite educational for everyone actively involved...myself included.
Thanks to laser for finding it and setting up the game...it has been really fun so far.

I think that was him.
Basically he said to look for stocks on a 52 week high and buy em. I did just that, but I still had about a dozen to choose from. I picked the ones that looked like the upward momentum was strong...
might as well throw darts.

Holy crap! GM saved my butt. sold it at 29 and made a buck or two:D
-
Wish we could trade in currencies in this game. I would have bought plenty of USD this past week with the interest rate going up it allows people to dump Euro's and make some money with USD. Especially against the Yen and other currencies. Also metals futures would be a good part of this one to have on your plate as well.
-
My sell order on Garmin and Palm, Inc never went through from yesterday when both were up a little and they crashed on me today and I am still sitting there with those crappy stocks now.
-
I can extend the end of the game if you guys would like. I think we have less then 2 weeks left.

Nah. I think everyone in the game who has participated has done so on the basis that it was a 30 day game (or 31, can't remember) and bought and sold accordingly. I know I did.
I say we do another one after this if people still want to.

Id be up for another round

Bwahaha, my voodoo doll is working!
I'm up for a second round when this one ends. Lord knows I won't make the same $40,000 mistake again!

I'd love to but another round just isn't something I have the time for after this one. Yeah I know it only takes a little while daily but with football season kicking up and needing to get things ordered ASAP I don't have the time at all.
-
Reschke, you could try the long term investment strategy. Most of the guys here are buying and selling stock daily.
But you could research for 3-5 days and come up with something that'll do decent if you just sit on it.

It is a way to bet on a stock going down rather than up.
Basically you are selling stock that you don't own. Later you "cover" the short order by buying the stock you previously sold.
Example:
I sell short on stock "X" trading at a price of $5.
When (if) the stock goes down you "buy to cover" at the lower price...say $4.50.
By doing so you made 50 cents on each share.
-
How can you sell something you don't have? Who's buying it if you are selling it?
-

In this game it is sort of fudged, but in the market a broker "lends" you the stock and they sell it for you in the market. You owe them the same amount of shares after the short sell transaction. If the price goes down you then buy (to cover) the stock at the lower price and settle up with the broker.

this got me to thinking, what would happen if you sold a stock short and it splits 2 for 1, the price per share is now 50% of what it was. would you still buy to cover the same amount of shares or ?????
(Edit) basically the question is what happens if a stock splits on the share sold short?
-
Is the market closed today?

National holiday BlueJ, so you're just going to have to keep kicking everyone's tulips tomorrow.
Plus yesterday ended early. At 2 or so.

I don't know the answer to that man...but no doubt there is no way to manipulate the market on something like that. However it works I doubt you can gain some advantage.

I finally got around to googling it, the answer is found here The Fool FAQ shorting stocks (http://www.fool.com/FoolFAQ/FoolFAQ0033.htm)
basically says if you short 100 shares and it splits 2:1, you now have to buy to cover 200 shares.
-
Oh, I get it (possibly). Either way the short sell goes (to the benefit or pain of the shorter), the brokerage firm makes money.
I.E. If I short sell something, and the price goes down, soon I'll have to purchase the shares again and give them back. The brokerage firm didn't have to sit there and lose money on their stock, but have the stock which has the possibility of going up.
Or if I short something, and it goes up, I lose money but the brokerage firm reclaims those shares which are suddenly more valuable.
Wait a second, scenario A doesn't make any sense. If the price goes down, the brokerage firm loses money because in the end they are holding onto the same number of shares that are worth less.
So why would any brokerage firm take that risk? Or is it a risk that they are hoping would screw the trader but benefit themselves?

yes a brokerage makes money, whether stocks do good or bad. $7-$30 a trade, plus a percentage of the value for certain types of trades.
read the FAQ in the link in my previous post, for how short selling works.
as for why they would take the risks, well for one, to keep a paying customer happy, and they are not really risking anything.
the reason is, some people buy a stock and hold it for a long long time, knowing historically the price is going up. as long as the company is making money, goods, growing the business, expanding, etc. the stocks value will go up.
anyway back to the point.
the short seller is borrowing stock from some one who is going to hold it for a long time.
selling short is usually a short term contract, borrow the stock for a certain period of time. say for example; 120 days. that means the short seller hopes the price drops lower before the 120th day, so they can buy to cover to make money. they can buy to cover the day after they sold it short, if they wanted to.
but if it never does drop lower, and keeps going up, at the end of 120 days of the contract the short seller has to buy to cover. and it may very well cost the short seller a lot more than what they got for selling it short.

I gotta ask, why are you using a buy limit?
looking at your transactions; looks like you doing it backwards.
if this is what you do in real life, I'd be :cry
far as I know, most use a sell limit. as in buy at market, then sell limit good til cancel for a couple $ more. or sell short at market, then buy to cover limit good til cancelled for a few $ less, hopefully before the contract runs out.
maybe use buy limit good til cancelled for when price drops to a certain level below what the current price is, then maybe a sell limit good til cancelled for a few $ more.
some use sell limit good until cancelled, to limit the losses after making some nice gains on a stock.
just remember one thing, no matter how much the price drops after you buy it. you don't really lose anything, until you sell it at a loss. chances are, over the long term, the price will go higher and then you can sell at a profit.
if you happen to look at my history in transactions, some didn't go through as the way I intended the transaction to be. delayed updates in browser ect. took awhile to figure out how this game worked.
-
In real life only the fool, or the desperate does _not_ use buy and sell-limit. This game is not representative of the real market tho.
-
If I understand it correctly (and I may well not) the buy limit will not purchase over the price I have set. With the slow moving trades and fast moving market I don't want to miss a spike and buy too late.
-

Yup.. buy limit sets the max ammount you want to pay for a stock. In real life you need to set that limit or you may end up paying top $ and be the "chump" that got in on top because there is always a que. If you dont get it at the price you want then accept that you have not, and move on. (again.. in RL)
:)
-
That's what I thought. I had 1 trade go very bad early on and lost $4 a share on 10,000. That's when I started watching Jim Cramer's Mad Money on CNBC. He's been very educational. I think I'll do much better in the next round.
-
I havent done any trading this week at all (on vacation) and it shows :D

Forgot to post on this sooner, just been real busy.
Just a guess but the following makes sense:
Well two things happen.
1) You now have two shares where you had one. The value gets halved/share, the total value remains the same as long as nothing else changes.
2) The share value to cover is also halved but the shares to cover has doubled, again, effectively the total value remains the same.
Example:
You sell short 100 shares of stock valued at $500.00. You have a total invested of $5,000.00. It then splits 2 for 1. You now have 200 shares valued @$250.00 for the same total of $5,000.00.
The break even *buy to cover* price now also dropped from $500.00 to the same $250.00/share.
What used to affect the price to drop (again for example) say $100.00 from $500.00 to $400.00@ now affects the split shares @$50.00 from $250.00 to $200.00/share.
You now *buy to cover* for a total of $10,000.00 profit (200 x $50.00 = $10,000.00). If the stock did not split 2 for 1, the total outcome would be the same. $100.00 drop/share for the 100 shares.
The total value lost in the above example would be the same regardless of the number of shares outstanding.
Man, 3:40 am so I am very tired...hope it makes sense.

4 days left gentlemen.

Earnings reports out today.
LLET'S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE!!
-
3 days left.
I'm wondering if anyone has bought options that will mature within the next couple of days and blow everyone out of the "water"?
I almost tried to do it but chickened out and didn't even try...too bad though because I would have tripled my money if the system allowed option trades.
-
Man, this has been on the back burner for the last two weeks... can't believe I haven't slipped past 3rd!
-
lol
You will soon go up another spot..
Nortel is tanking on me. Why do I torture myself with this stock? WHY?
lol
-
I invested in Texas Instruments. Bad decision, it went up 6 grand for me, then promptly dropped 16 when I decided to ride it out for more. It's now back up 6 grand to keep me above my starting amount of 100 grand. I think I'm just going to let it ride the remaining days out because I don't have time to fix it.
3 more days gentlemen. Good luck.
-
I havnt had time to mess around with it much. I see my stocks tanked. Oh well.

Just to get up that hill.
Now we're up in the big leagues,
Gettin' our turn at bat.
As long as we live, it's you and me baby,
There ain't nothin wrong with that.

I got burned so huge. My stupid mistake in thinking I had it all figured out. I learned a valuable lesson playing this game.:aok

In this short game, I learned that betting on the shares dropping would give better results than betting on gains.
Sometimes I was actually playing the same stock against itself to minimize against higher losses. Short Sell, yeah, I like it. :)

Been there. I lost $40K on GHL Technologies because the trades were so slow. It's definitely a short seller's game if you only run 30 days. Bulls are hard to catch, but bears go on for days.
