Seriously I don't know a single person that agrees with this so I don't know how they are getting away with it.
City officials voted Monday night to begin eviction proceedings against residents who refuse to leave their riverfront homes, signaling the end may be near in an eminent domain dispute that reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
The City Council approved the action 5-2, authorizing the city attorney to take the necessary steps, including possible court action, to evict the remaining two families and obtain the properties. A lawyer for the families said they are considering continuing their battle with the city.
About 100 people packed the meeting room, a hallway and an adjacent room.
The small city has been trying for a decade to redevelop the once vibrant Fort Trumbull neighborhood along the Thames River. Seven homeowners challenged the city's plans to seize their properties and build a hotel, convention center and upscale condominiums, saying eminent domain can't be used to make way for private development.
But a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling last year upheld the city's right to take the homes. The court, however, said states were free to restrict eminent domain seizures, and many already have. A proposal to change Connecticut's law died in this year's state legislative session.
Since the Supreme Court ruling, all but two families have settled with the city and agreed to leave.
Michael Cristofaro, one of the Fort Trumbull holdouts, spoke out against the property seizures.
"Just give us back our deeds," Cristofaro said. "You are not being straight with us or the public. You are not listening to the general public."
Cristofaro singled out five of the seven council members who favor taking the property.
"You are a disgrace to the city, the state and the nation," he said.
One would hope that the 5 of 7 council members will be reminded of this decision next election.

This happens all the time in Texas. Recently about 200 homes, mostly owned by senior citizens, were taken by an emminent domain ruling in Hurst to make room for a new parking lot for a mall. :huh

I think I'd be one of those hold outs that the police would have to drag kicking and screaming. I think a person like that would get alot of support from around the US as long as he didn't kill any cops in the process.

Yep, pretty damned worthless. And come to think of it, if the pres is so hot to amend the constitution, an amendment limiting Eminent domain would be a worthy candidate.
-
If it's good for big business it's good for America. Eminent domain is good for big business. Only terrorists fight eminent domain. Think of the children.

The government is more heavily armed than you.

Can't think of a better thing to die for, other than one's family....better than being a sheep (or subject for that matter). ;)

Nevertheless. ;)

Many states are seeing the wrong in the Supreme Court decision and passing state laws limiting the use of eminent domain. Luckily my state did so recently also.

How do people from that area pronounce "Thames"? Just curious.

but,but we NEED more convention centers and upscale condominiums, because developers make money by building stuff, you can't make money by building affordable housing, you need to build upscale housing.
do the numbers.
-
If you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear from eminent domain.

Eminent domain is the biggest bunch of horse puckey ever shoveled.
I can understand the needs of the people to have power & water etc. but when tey allow privately owned companies to steal peoples private property I just get so mad I could spit nails.
I heard of a recent case where a state (Michigan?) is trying to use it to get 37 acres of land from Exxon mobil & Exxon is taking it all the way to the supreme court. It's funny to see the shoe on the other foot, I'm sure Exxon has gotten land through eminent domain.

I agree. And maybve thats what it will take. People to die in defence of their property for there to create an uproar.
Personally that is about the only way I'd be willing to take up arms against my government.
that or if one of our presiudents decides to try to proclaim himself king

Forcing someone out of their home to let someone else use it is a disgrace to this country. However, is it a federal issue? Why can't the states handle it?

It can be used by city, county, state or federal govt.

what did they actually decide?
The case was brought over a town issue right?
