Title: dial up
Post by: jaxxo on June 06, 2006, 10:34:03 PM
my fps is way above usual and ive literally won every ram/collision usually without taking any damage since being forced to use dial up ( moved to styx)  despite these "advantages"  it still sux pretty bad   sorry for all the warping..ive actually been stick stirring quite a bit to watch bogies flop around tryin to stay with my warpin ride..this is entertaining but the flip side is i cant judge how far away cons are with any accuracy ..same as before I guess :D  (also 5 hour game download) yikes!

Judging purely upon the fact you said "5 hour game download", I would say your connection is better than mine.

I used to warp worse than Cpt. Kirk when I first changed out from DSL to DU (non-voluntarily) but a quick fiddle with your modem settings can change all this.

I now lose UDP rarely and warp even less.... All this with an average of 20kbps connection.... It can be done.

warping was bad tonight for me, it caused me to log off. maybe it will be better tomorow. Maybe my loss of 50+ frps will be back tomorrow too.

I have dial up , ping 140ish and lose most collisions . It takes awhile to find a good ISP . Ive been threw about 15 ips's finding a good one. Lots of hours running  pingplotter.

Disabling V.92, V.90 help stabilize a trouble connection,   running an independent phone line for the modem helps too. If you have call waiting be sure to disable it in your modems property box.

Make sure if your going to be stuck on a phone line that you have a good hardware based modem , i have a usr external 5686E that runs around 99 bucks , but its worth it, winmodems sux . Cable is finally coming to my area sometime this summer so if ya still need a modem then you can have it   . 38

dail up connections is what causes my 50 calibres to shoot rubber bullets. last nite it was retarded, spits dont absorb that many bullets. Its not fun wasteing half ur ammo shooting at a warpy con either.  I have a cable modem so i noe its not me.  I wouldnt have the cable modem if my cable company didnt offer it in a package where i get both for a good price but i would have had to get one any way.  Downloading anything with a regular dail up connect will take forever.

I've been playing on dial up since 2002 ,I have occassional warps ,but never nothing serious and most nights my ping rate is 178-195,rubber bullets have never been an issue.Dial up gets blamed for lots of problems that arent neccessarily realted to haveing dial up.I see more people on xtreme high speed connects complaining of connect issues. With dial up your either connected or your not. When I disco ,which is every night around 11:20 cst,it goes straight to desk top.I ussually will only disco one time in a 4-6 hour gameing session.

Funny, I'd have to say that next to satelitte, cable is one of the worst connections there is for online gaming.

I worked for adelphia an ive seen more packet loss on their network than you would like to believe ,  it had to be over 10% before they would do anything about it . I hear alot of people say that dialup is the cause of all evil , but most hispeed users automatically assume that  because they have broadband that its the other persons fault . If alot of these cable user looked at a pingplot they would see  that  they are part of the problem .  I know i check my pingplots often , i'd rather have a dialup connection with 0 packet loss , than a cable modem with 10% in AH .

I have a sattelite connection at home but im getting back my old dial up connection for playing AH.  when you run ping plot the dial up really dont do too bad, the only packet loss i see when checking the isp i used at home and am returning too is a NY server.  My round trip ping time is generally around 170ms. dial up definitly kicks sattelites...... tushie

I have always been on dial up in California.  Best I can get on is 26k due to old phone lines. Pings usually 200 to 250.  Once and a while some say I warp, but that is rare.  I usually have a very flat line.

I can even fly with my son who has ICS setup with me.  We can't use vox, (then we warp) but we can just talk to each other across the room.  Aces High does not require much bandwidth.
