Title: Revenge of the Stolen Sidekick (cellphone)
Post by: Sandman on June 06, 2006, 10:54:51 PM
This is hilarious. The guy's friend left her cellphone in a taxi and someone else picked it up, refused to return it and then started using it.

This guy has been making updates to the site as the story unfolds.

Enjoy.

Best thing about this, the MP will likely get busted back to a Pvt and be doing security at a JC Penny. I love the UCMJ

Seems like the cell phone company would deactivate the phone from further use upon notification by the legitimate account holder.  Or they can triangulate the position as to where the phone is if it's left on.  To re-activate, don't the cell phone companies get any information stored on the phone, such as serial numbers and so on and so forth?  Where's the bill of sale if questions arise?  Seems like a phone call to the original owner from the cell phone company would clear things up if that was in question.

Why all the fuss and internet drama?  Losing or having a cell phone stolen is serious business.  The cell phone owner shouldn't have to deal with it past making a single phone call.;)

Who said they had to? It's just more fun to mess up people's lives that are being arses about petty things like this. I'm guessing they just decided to tell the phone company not to shut it down so they could play with them; I would. :D

Are we talking some big SWAT operation or just some BS "hands up" job?  I'm really hoping for the first one:)

For the time I worked there while in school, I never heard of an incident where they disabled a particular phone from working on the network because of it being reported stolen.  The SIM card would just get disabled.  After that, the theif could simply get another SIM for $20 and open an acct or put their own SIM in it if they already had an account.

They do have the IMEI (serial) number of the phone itself though, as it's recorded every time a phone makes a call from their network, so you would think they could keep it from working on their network.

i have a feeling that a phone company would just drag their feet in a situation like this.. heck, if the theives are paying the bill the phone company is happy..

And the lesson to today's thieves is?

"YOU MUST BE SMARTER THAN THE TECHNOLOGY  YOU ARE STEALING"

And on a side note:

The G-money in question:

http://www.evanwashere.com/StolenSidekick/Brother_MySpace.jpg

be shure to read his about me portion:

"im a real nice person even though the army teaches you to be a violent killer"

I about rolled out of my chair on that one...  (AH boards at its finest.. Thanks Sandman for the chuckle on my friday grind..)

In my previous job profession, I was a Roaming and Switch cordinator for  AT&T Wireless. Back then SIM cards were just coming out Late 90's. You could/can block the phone from working. All you need back then was the ESN(Electronic Serial Number) or now called IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) I really like ESN's a nice short name..than that stupid IMEI international crap..

Any hoo, you can lock it down as stolen. Even if you put in a new SIM card the phone would/will not work.

I especially enjoyed the part about the MP who's officer's tried to crusify him after he made a threat to the guy.

High 5's to the guy for being a persistant SOB.
