Title: Rear View Mirrors
Post by: Stoney74 on June 07, 2006, 12:35:32 AM
I know this has probably been covered, but when I look at pictures of Spits, razorback jugs, P-51Bs, etc. they all have mirrors above the front canopy rail.  Is this just too hard to code for the game?

Probably not but it would kill your frame rates.  Or so I have been told.

in the old game 'their finest hour' (i think that was the name) on old 386 systems, they had rearview mirrors that worked. ;)  of coz, you had to pan to were it was, but still handy.

One option would be to have a mirror view that you can map in place of the standard rear view. May save on frame rate because the mirror isn't ALWAYS showing what's behind you, you gotta actually switch to that view.

Yeah.... take what AH currently requires to run without mirrors, and DOUBLE it, then you have the system requirements for AH *WITH* mirrors.

Then unmap that button, ram it, and see what your rank is afterwards.

:lol

No, you wont get me to check on my rank. I dont want to have heart attaacks at this young and tender age.

As for mirrors mapped to a certain key..... dont we already HAVE that? (Keypad 2)

The mirror could be mapped, would show the rearward from a higher pos than 2 on the keypad though. Cannot be too hard to code. But it would be restricted to the aircraft that had them...

Id love to see mirrors implemented but there should be a settings option to turn the mirrors off.

"objects in mirror may be closer than they appear"
by the time you looked(to enjoy the candy) you would be dead.
In all seriousness mirrors would result in a huge fr hit. That has been my experience with sims that have them.I always disabled them.

other sims dont have 700 players in 1 arena to track, and at times show 30+ planes in the mirror

SChatzi: See what Angus said. Keypad 2 by itself in some fighters (ESPECIALLY the blue planes) is still restricted because you can't set the rear view to a position that completely avoids all the obstructions (F4Us are particularly bad about this). Having a "mirror key" (see how AW handled keypad 2 for the Corsair, where it framed the view in a mirror) would put the viewing angle at a more useful position.

easy, do like OTHER sims do. LOL. wow this is tough for some of you guys.

Track only up until a distance in the mirror. You wont be using your mirrors to spot cons 1k out which is the only possible time you'd ever have a chance of having "30 cons in your mirror".

Also, allow for the optoins of being able to turn them off/on and also to decrease the resolustion of the mirrors for players whos system isn't up to par.

What Morph said. I'm for having mirrors on planes that had them.

Mirrors, good idea that will give me one more part to get shot off my plane. I can see the "Ctrl d" report now, mirror .

OMG no mirror!!!!  (hit's the silk)

Morpheus

why not take it a step further and have the rendering distance for the mirror as a slider just like the other object sliders.

not only that ... you could decrease structure detail in mirrior to only show a silhouette.  It doesn't need to have the detail of the rest of the game.  But should certainly be an option if implemented.

anyone will probably tell you the only thing a mirror is good for is looks. They are basicly useless in all other aspects of flight in a FLIGHT sim. The screen is far too small and on a computer game, hitting the hat and looking back is just as good. They'd be nice to have, but only for added looks.

Go pick up a flight sim that has mirros in it. Lockon, IL2 and you'll understand what I'm saying.

I know exactly what your saying. When I flew CFS2 you could overlay windows and set the view in that window. Creating a small window like a rear view mirror was just about useless. By the time you saw anything in the mirror it was usually to late.
