Dunno if its done before, but here is mine in the correct order
Das Boot
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now (redux)
Are there any others that can hope to match these 3?
-
Blackhawk down ( Yea i know not really a war movie. But It has some great combat scenes)
Downfall
Hamburger Hill
Bronk
-
Der Untergang
The Deer Hunter
Platoon (though full metal is better you already named it)
-
Oh yes.. the deer hunter is a great movie, but is it really a war movie?
-
Das Boot
Der Untergang
Idi i smotri (Come and See)
But I also love:
Dark Blue World, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, The Dambusters....
-
The following movies don't even belong in the top 100 list of war movies:
Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Windtalkers.
That is all.

so then navy seals and pearl harbor do belong?
oh and yeah i think deer hunter belongs, it is the central part of the movie, the war and what it does....
and i have to say personally i hated das boot. hell K19 widowmaker, U571, and crimson tide were "better" sub movies or at least more enjoyment to watch.

After playing DOD:S and Red orchestra alot. The part in the end of SPR where all the germans come over the berm and the 4 americans have to run. The Germans shoulda nade spammed first.
-
TORA! TORA! TORA!
(has the best combat scenes and special effects of all)
-
Patton
"You don't win a war by dying for your country. You win a war by having the other poor Son of a B!*ch die for his!"
That is a GREAT line! :aok :aok
-
A Bridge Too Far
The Bridges at Toko-Ri
We were Soldiers Once...
-
Guns of Navarone
Patton
Dirty Dozen
and the series Band of Brothers..

Big Red 1
We were Soldiers Once
Patton
Those would be my pick, possibly adding 12 O'Clock High and the Band of Brothers series. For realism in combat scenes, Saving Private Ryan.
For older Cavalry movies, some of the John Wayne flicks like She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Corney but still good entertainment.

Why is it not a war movie?
I regard 2001: A Space Odyssey opening scene as the FIRST war movie. One side discovers the bone club, smacks the other side down. With a little help from the monolith that sings.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Platoon
Tora Tora Tora

Pearl Harbor with Ben Afflect!:aok :aok :aok
(http://www.cinemasavvy.com/p/images/pearlharbor.jpg)
-
Cross of Iron
Zulu
Waterloo
-
only a few war movies had a real impact on me, like:
- Saving Private Ryan
- Das Boot
and just a few to name because they are entertaining to watch:
- Battle of Britain
- The Great Escape
- Un Taxi pour Tobrouk

No No No No NO... that's Pearl Harbor with Kate Beckinsale. :aok
-
Battleground by William Wellman
Napoleon by Abel Gance
Paths of Glory by Stanley Kubrick
These come immediately to mind
-
Gettysburg.
Patton.
Zulu.
(I know, they all have their flaws, but are great films.)
-
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
Memphis Belle
-
The Longest Day
A Bridge to Far
Saving Pvt Ryan
are among the tops, but it is hard to limit or define the "3 best". It is too subjective.
Also in my top listing I would include
Battleground
Blackhawk Down
We were soldiers once...
Flying Tigers
Sands of Iwo Jima
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Hamburger Hill
I always like "In Harms Way", but hardly a "great" war movie.
-
Patton
Guns of Navarone
Eagles Nest (richard burton, clint Eastwood, might have the name wrong)
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape
The Longest Day
The Green Berets (kinda sappy at the end, glossy but ok)
We Were Soliders Once
Full Metal Jacket
The Battle of Britain
The Dirty Dozen
Kelly's Heros
Midway

Team America Lyrics - Pearl Harbor Lyrics
I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that ****ty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you

It was a marathon film done by Ted Turner. It was initially released in theaters.
I was in Gettysburg during the filming researching a thesis. I met Richard Jordan and Martin Sheen at a local restaurant. There was confusion about reservations. Richard Jordan had a reservation for a party of 6. I have the same last name, but my reservation was for a party of two, both at 8 PM.
Richard died about a year later.. Inoperable brain tumor...:( He was a very nice fellow.

Couple of Aussie classics, seing as how you guys have allready mentioned most of my favourites.
Breaker Morant. True story set in the Boer War.
ANZACs. Actually a TV mini-series, but well worth a mention anyway.
The Odd Angry Shot. Classic Aussie Vietnam war movie.
The Light Horsemen. Story of the men and horses involved in the last great cavalry charge in history, the charge at Bersheeba, Palestine(actually mounted infantry, not cavalry, they didnt carry sabres or lances, but were equipped with SMLEs and bayonets)
Edit> Just noticed Widewing mentioned the Light Horse allready, good to see that people from other countries have seen it and know the story, fantastic to see it mentioned by a non-Aussie as a favourite.
Widewing, they were remarkable men, and magnificant beasts, the telling of their story could be nothing but an inspiring movie.

I didn't mention that I own a 1916 Lithgow No.1 Mk.III SMLE that was issued to Private George Lewis of the 9th Light Horse. He arrived with the 28th Reinforcements and joined the unit in March of 1917 and arrived in theater in September of 1917. I was able to track down some of his records because he scratched his name and unit into the brass buttplate. He returned with his unit, departing for home on July 10, 1919. He arrived too late to participate in the spring battles in Gaza, but was present for the fight at Beersheba on October 31, 1917.
There's a pretty fair chance that this old rifle was used in the famous mounted charge at Beersheba. I have no idea what happened to Lewis after his discharge from service. His pre-war occupation is listed as "horseman". His pre-enlistment address was in Port Agusta and his parents lived in Broken Hill, NSW.
Anyway, this Enfield has the premier place of honor in my collection. It hasn't been fired in 15 years.
I also have a 1917 Lithgow Enfield, which likewise, will never be fired again.
My regards,
Widewing

...The Blue Max is great with particularly good air to air footage, but the actual stunt flying in Von Richthofen and Brown is by far the wildest i've ever seen. its a little watched low budget roger corman movie (no swamp mosters or chicks with DDDs) whcih used the planes from The Blue Max...
...How about Aces High starring Maclom McDowell in his prime. Any good? I got what seemed to be a 3rd generation VHS of it once, but it was unwatchable...
...also very good, the Errol Flynn version of The Dawn Patrol
-
But what about ....
Casablanca muhahahahaa ...
what was that Aussie Movie With Mel Gibson as a Runner in the trench wars of WW1 ??? I thought that was really good .

Top worst in recent memory:
Pearl Harbor (Dont bother and watch Tora Tora Tora)
U-571 (Tyring to be Das Boot and winding up as a B action flick)
Had to say. I guess kids might like them, since lots of things blow up.
The Battle Of Britain
The Blue Max
Are not listed often enough, which is odd since AH is an air combat game. Just struck me as odd.
Gallipoli?....its a war movie in the last 10 minutes of the film. Wouldnt make my top 50 even. The remake of All Quiet On the Western Front was a lot better, imho. The Light Horsemen as well, yes.
Cross Of Iron, yes indeed, one of the few movies portraying German infantry on the Russian front, its very good.

I can't remember the movie for the life of me . I just happened to catch the last 20 min or so the other night.
Film is in b/w setting German prison camp. At the end of the movie they hide a prisoner in the water tower or let him be turned over to the ss.
The guy in charge of security was a German plant. The prisoners then use the plant as a decoy so they can get the guy in the water tower out of the camp.
Any remember this movie.
It may not be the greatest but it was enjoyable.

Kelly's Heroes is a great flick, just because it is funnier than most war movies (even The Longest Day had some good laughs in it) doesnt make it bad.
Cool it with the negative vibes, man

The Beast (of War) is excellent! T-62 crew gets lost in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and has to fight not only the Mujahedin, but each other to survive. Easily one of the 10 best war movies.

Kellys Heros was not a great war movie, and isn't that what we are discussing?
I didn't even think it was a particularly good movie as a comedy.
What next, Iron Eagle?
-
Tora, Tora, Tora
Midway
Patton
the 3 I love most. John Wayne was a hottie :)
-
Hell in the Pacific
The entire cast was Lee Marvin, Toshiro Mifune, island, ocean.

Actually, Kelly's Heroes does a good job of showing the insanity of war.
Is it pure fantasy? Almost entirely. On the other hand, Dad, who served in WW II (43-46) and Korea (50-52), said you'd be stunned to know the sort of scams and things of that nature that went on. Not to mention that nearly every character in it reminded him of someone he served with at one time or another.

DMF, If yah like the Duke, check out 'They were Expendable'.
Great flick.. John Ford directed. Great film work. Also stars Robert Montgomery.. good actor from the day; most notable in this role because he was a Navy Destroyer Captain in the war just months before filming.
Some say it was the Dukes best war movie. It sure wasn't his worst. ;)

On top of that read the book about the guy it was based on.
Pre WW2 in after he got his commission he was on the same ferry that the Japanese ambassador was on, and he stole his briefcase and jumped overboard and turned it over to Navy intel, getting sent to china as a reward...
He got Macarthur out of the Philippines
He inserted OSS agents into Europe from his PT boats.
He rescued men from sinking landing craft of Normandy.
He ran the around at high speed in the Big harbor that we took right after D-Day to get some 88s to reveal there possitions.
He took part in the operation to fool the Germans on where the invasion of southern France would be, at the time the skipper of a destroyer.
He took on two German ships, a destroyer and a DE (heavy modified Yacht) and sank both with only 1 five inch gun on his destroyer working and not working right since a crewmen had to hand ram the shells home by hand( and got a medal for it).
When the captain of the German destroyer refused to salute our flag when he was rescue, John Bulkely pushed his bellybutton back in TWICE! Then left him there floating and rescued others and came back an hour later, this time that german saluted the flag.
He later took on Castro and proved that we stole no water from him.
The guy was a larger then life hero.
Read about him here.
Sea Wolf : The Daring Exploits of Navy Legend John D. Bulkely (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0891416633/sr=8-2/qid=1150410138/ref=sr_1_2/104-8079396-6324714?%5Fencoding=UTF8)
Not just informative, a great entertaining read.

I've never heard of that one, but its an old B&W movie, so I'll watch it :)
Besides it has John in it :)
I'd love to get ahold of the book on the real guy too.
