Title: 42.3 Gigabytes of Hard Disk Space, taken by your game.
Post by: Reiel on June 12, 2006, 10:55:07 PM
This is Richard Hayes, a dedicated,(once was) player of your game, Aces High Two. But, a problem has arisen. During the time I was playing Day of Defeat: Source, your game managed to duplicate itself, becoming unbelievabley huge. I discovered this when I checked out photoshop, I was out of Scratch Disk space. So, not even going to accuse your 'lovely' game, I deleted my Steam, hoping it was the source... Garry's Mod, DoD, CS, everything. Thank you for the wonderful night your damn game has bestowed upon me, and please, please try and fix this weird glitch.

Sincerely,
              Richard Hayes

You have a right to be angry, but please refrain from taking it out on other board members.

Ok, I was out of line. But please try and understand, I lost fifteen gigabytes of models, modifications, and utilities trying to fic the problem before I realized what did it, I've been trying to look up information and cannot find much helpful.

Um, there's something wrong there Reiel.  I just checked my Hard Drive and using properties, my entire htc folder takes up 2.06 Gig on disk and that's with the a bloated Terrain Editor folder, custom sking folders, an out of date Joystick Beta version, and a full backup copy to preserve my settings folders etc.  At 43 Gig you definately have a problem but I can't see that it's Aces High.

Maybe it's time to post your system spec. etc.

I think I saw this in a Star Trek episode.

No where near dumb but thanks for asking me to check.

My game is 1.05 Gigs and Ive never seen what you described but it seemed like you were saying DoD had done this. Like SunKing said it seemed like the episode in Star Trek where the man from a parallel universe wanted to destroy his duplicate. Maybe it was the "not going to accuse" and "your damn game" contrast that threw me but I think it was way before that.

I hope you have a better day today! :D

Our game does not have the ability to duplicate/replicate itself.

Swoop, if you have 100MB of film files, it grows. If you have skins enabled, it grows a LOT. If you have high-res and skin packs installed, it grows a LOT MORE!

Then there's the maps. There's a bajillion crappy-arsed HTH maps that do nothing but take up HD space (that's why I think duh's total is so large, personally)

Mine tops out at 3.04GB, but that's because I do a lot of skins. I keep all the iterations of my skins, all the work files, all the archives, under subdirectories in the skins directory, so they're all added to this total, as well.

203MB main dir
~100mb terrains
770MB cache
32mb films
1.91GB skins (that's mostly my skin files)
40MB sounds (sound pack)

EDIT: My skins files/archives come out to about 1.7GB or so, I just checked

My point is, I was not paying or anything. I checked the size of it afterwards before I played DoD, considering I was putting in a modification for Gmod. It was fairly small. After DoD, it's expanded vastly.

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
3006.8 MHz (Full)

DRAM Type DDR-SDRAM
DRAM Size 2048 MBytes

Module 0 Wintec Industries DDR PC3200 - 512 MBytes
Module 1 Wintec Industries DDR PC3200 - 512 MBytes
Module 2 Wintec Industries DDR PC3200 - 512 MBytes

Duh: you need to just keep the sounds you like, ditch the rest!

Reiel: You need to be more specific I guess. Something happened. Do you mean that something copied AH's directory so that there are two or more directories, all with the same contents? How has it "grown" to 40GB? Look inside the directory and look for 40GB of files, it shouldn't be hard. Tell us what the files are named, and in what sub directory they are included.

If you see 20+ copies of the same directory, that might be an indication. Things like "Copy of cache (1)", "Copy of cache (2)", etc...

Krusty, I did not take the time to inspect it. I deleted the game as soon as I saw how big it was, I needed to do a request. I do not have any specifics.... and I'm giving the game one more little chance.

AH under 1 gig here.  900something mb.

I have a Backup of everything, includin' old flims, mitsu sounds, etc.  Even got a couple of AH.EXE's i've downloaded.
Total space used =just under 2 gigs, but w/o the backups, it would be 900mb ish.

ive got a total of 9 gb of AH  from ah .049  thru the 500mb's of ah1 terrains/ films ---- thru all of ah2 .. i even lost 400 mbs of ah2 films over the yrs... and im not counting the user made Avi's/movies.

I'VE  never seen this game replicate itself ... the only way anything on your pc will replicate is either in backups ... a nasty Worm/Virous .... or someone with sticky fingers .

Off topic, and sorry for hijacking this thread but...

Roscoroo... do you still have the pizza map on your system? If so, do you also have the install files for the version of AH that will run it?

I'm trying to do a recreation of the pizza map. But, certain details elude my fading 50 year old memory. ;)

I'm happy to email either or both to you NHawk.

Mine is 1.6GB, but i have no high res textures installed. It would have to replicate about 24 times to get to 42 GB. I am real curious what made it so big in your case, may be you made avis from your ah2 films in the directory?
Or you simply used it as default dir for some other app.

BTW there is a nifty application called treesize that shows the sizes of the directorys with their subfolder in a browser, verry good to locate the real hogs.

EDIT: Schatzi just suggested you might have had a malware program that inflated files. Another thought, maybe you have a "safe install" program which enables you to undo any updates and which did savety copies of ah2 everytime you ran a patch. Some programs allow you to restore to old versions and therefor save all data before it gets overwritten or just save all data to be sure.

If yer running WinXP you can use System Restore (Start>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools>SystemRestore) to return your PC to its pre-disaster state. It should pick-up all of the stuff you lost, return your AH2 folder to its nice gentle memory footprint as well as restoring all of those other apps you tossed over the side.

I have my System Restore disabled, considering some Trojans actual embed themselves into that program. All is well, but I'm staying aware of what the game is doing.

Again, the game has no way to do what you are suggesting.  There is no need to even infer it can do it.  It is impossible for the game to do it.

If there was a way for the game to do what you suggest, I think after over 6 years of shipping it, we would have had more than one complaint about it.  Think about it.

I have no doubt you are having an issue, but you are looking in the wrong place for the problem.
