Greetings all,
Sorry to start another "video card thread" but didn't want to hijcak Enduros and cause confusion.:)
Here's my problem....last night my long trusted ATI Radeon 9700pro crapped the bed. :cry I am not looking to make a major upgrade, but would settle for equilvalent or maybe even a step above to replace it.
My comp specs:
P4 2.53 on an ASUS P4T533C motherboard
512MB of PC1066 RDRAM
400W power supply
Suggestions as to what would be a good replacement would be greatly appreciated.:aok

If your looking to do it cheap , the X800GTO, or X1600pro is a nice jump up from your current GPU . Enduro's machine is pretty close to yours so his thread would apply to your pc aswell.

I would check specs to make sure obviously to get a compatible VC. but I had an ATI 9600, was good. Got an Nvidia 6600gt, 128, agp. Bought it off Newegg.com. With rebates 130 bucks :) I get over 70 FR's. Also, get more RAM.

your kinda in the same boat ...
Here is what i call my Baseline for AH
this is what i get outta my Crucial 9600pro 128 card . this is 512 tex , 4.12 omega's ... this pic was taken today in the TA .

my friends 9800 pro 256 is alittle crisper , my x800 is in a 64 bit pc and its on the Hires settings and its a step up but runs the same fps ...
your not gonna get much more eye candy wise in lowres ...
so basically any 9800 pro , x 800 ,x850 gto ,1600 agp card is and should be at least as good and better then my 9600 card .
i believe if you want to see a huge improvement,,, its step up and go 64 bit .
I caught a 1600 pro 512 card in action the other day and it was a sweet step up ... but it was in a 64 bit pc and pritty equal to my x800 in "far cry"

Now, what equivelant GeForce level would a 9800 pro be? FX5600? (*wild guess*)

I went from 1 gig of ram to 2 and from an ati 9800pro to evga 7800 gs oc.
I was looking at ati also until i saw comparisons here:

I had to upgrade my power supply as it only had 16 amps on the 12 volt rail.
I am now able to run ah2 in its highest settings - it has never looked better

What would your monitor refresh rate be?
Mine is set to 85 Hertz.
Thanks.

i have to run 85hz .. or more if i could (to many yrs behind a welding arc)
the 7800 is a great card but its still around 300 bucks

There used to be a webpage (somebody linked it on the forums a year back) that would allow you to pick any 2 video cards from 2 massive drop-down boxes, and it would compare them to each other based on what you picked.
Does anybody have that link? It would be sweet to have.

I had it but lost it when my hd failed a couple of months ago ... it even corrupted my .bak that had that link in it :(
