Title: Bye Bye Danny boy...
Post by: weaselsan on June 16, 2006, 06:18:19 PM
Anchor of CBS Evening News for a record 24 years until being forced out in March '05 by the Memogate scandal, Rather was fighting to stay at the network in some "meaningful" capacity. It was clear that the network wanted him gone.
Like virtually all CBS executives, network czar Les Moonves, once a Rather supporter, had distanced himself from the newsman. They had not had a real conversation for more than eight months, newsroom sources say.
Many inside CBS feel that Rather triggered his own demise by vigorously defending his flawed 60 Minutes II report in September '04 that questioned President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, even after the authenticity of the documents used in the piece could not be proved.
Rather later apologized to viewers, but his fate within CBS had been sealed. The only difference: It would take longer for him to leave. Unlike several of his coworkers in the scandal, Rather escaped the noose.

This had to be the most redicules screw up of modern times. Dan Rather takes what any moron could see was obviously a  fake document, and tried to pass it off as genuine. I'll bet for the rest of his days every time someone says "SUPERSCRIPT" he dives under a table. Danny figures he can single handed swing the election to Kerry. In the second year of Bush's term Danny's Arse is out the door. Good riddance!

You mean like Powell did taking it(a fake document) in front of the UN(and sucessfully selling it)for the sole purpose of going to war..?

What about GWB lying in his "State Uf The Union" address to the American peoples?

Talk about sellin it to the dumb (m)asses.

What amazed me the most was when Rather said "while the documents may have been fake, the basic facts of the story are correct".   What exactly did he base that statement on?  With no proof, just allegations, how could that pc of cht say the story was true?

The reason he ran with the story and defended it so vigoruosly was that Dan wanted it to be true.  He long ago abandon objective professional journalism, and focused instead on serving his own agenda.   He bit his bellybutton in the end.

Did Rather lie?

Or Bush?

How many lies have we caught Rather in?

Bush?

I never liked the guy. And I've been around long enough to have seen the whole ride. Edward R. Murrow he ain't.

And Bush ain't no JFK, either.

Regardless, I find the Bushies doth protest too much regarding his service.. and the lack of supporting witnesses to his service mildly amusing.

Meanwhile, kinda pointless digging through the compost heap fer pearls when the mess in the middle east is more than smelly enough for the stinky cheese lovers.

Buh bye, Danny Boy.

I figured it was a classic example of "fair and ballanced reporting". Glad to see he paid some penalty for his blatant favoritism.

Rather was going for another Nixon story so he could end his career on a big note. In his heydey he was a force to be recconed with, sadly he went the Joe Namath route and played way past his prime.

I bit on the story because I had heard it before during Bush's gubenatorial race. I still think there is some truth to it, but there are bigger fish to fry now.

I always felt Bob Schieffer was an excellent newsman. He's the last of a breed at CBS. A real journalist in the Murrow fashion. I hate to see him go, but he's what, 100?

And here I was thinking you were going to finish this sentence with, "and metaphorically snapped his tibia in front of the entire nation on live TV."

The supporting witness to his service is called a DD214 form, All vets have one, he was a fighter pilot in the TANG (Thats Texas Air national Guard.) From what his DD214 says as well as his superiors at the time, a damn good one. What witnesses are you looking for? A witness to what?

What I would like to see, (He won't release them) is Kerry's medical records regarding his (Snicker cough) war wounds. The old three wounds and your out rule served him well. Wound one a self inflicted scratch. Wound two a hang nail (biteing to close). Wound three a stubbed toe while running to get his discharge.

Joe Namath went out as a LA Ram with a whimper on bad knees.

It was Joe Theismann who broke his leg. Once on live TV and innumerable times thereafter on replays.

Kerry served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970. His 2nd tour of duty Vietnam was four months as commanding officer of a Swift boat. Kerry was awarded several medals during this tour, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.

How could someone praise Bush and condemn Kerry for their military services is beyond me.

Even if Kerrys wounds were minor, thats beside the fact that he (A) Saved a man's life (B) Killed at least one VietCong with his own rifle, and (C) Served TWO tour of duties.
