Title: Dad Thread
Post by: midnight Target on June 18, 2006, 12:18:10 PM
This is the 2nd Father's day since my dad passed away. I think we all need to take a minute to remember the most important man in our lives.

That's dad on the left, 1943, he was a B-25 radio nav and a tower operator (ATC). His 2 best friends signed up with him. Joe (the sailor) became a doctor, Fred on the right was a B-29 bombardier, and a successful CPA. He was at dad's funeral last year.

This was about 10 years ago. He was the worst guitar player in the world. He knew "Pearly Shells" and "Lemon Tree". Everything else he ever played sounded like one of those 2 songs. I'd give anything to hear them again.

Just got off the phone with my dad... he's doing well. He had a bout with prostate cancer about three years ago, but he's fully recovered. He's 66.

The week he finished his last radiation therapy, we went backpacking in the Emigrant Wilderness. I don't think he really enjoyed it, but we couldn't stop him from going. He's on the far right.

Mines been gone some 12 years now.

After he an my mother split when I was a teen he and I kinda had it out a couple years later and it wasnt untill about two years before I got married we even talked again. We eventually became friends but
We hadnt been close for a long time. But he really wasnt that way anyway.
and he kinda distanced himself from everyone

There were some good times, good things I remember.

But both good and bad I credit him for alot of things I am as a man. And some things I am not

I do miss him from time to time.
And I wish he coulda been around to see his grandchildren. Or even how I ended up turning out

I called Dad yesterday also.  He lost a right lung about a year ago to Cancer and still smokes.

I can't help to think at times when I get off the phone with him, is this the last time we talk?

Hell we've had our ups and downs thru life. He's Navy, I'm Army.... Our phone bills would jump sky high durning the Army/Navy Game... We'd fish and Hunt together. Drink and have a laff or two.

I dread the Day of our Final GoodBye... Love the Bastage thru all of it.

Got an email today. Ken Lloyd, P-38 pilot of the 80th FS Headhunters, died at 8:30 Sunday morning, Father's Day, of pulmonary fibrosis. Ken was a great friend, and a great man. His son sent me the news this morning, I near broke down at work. I knew it was coming, only a couple weeks ago Ken emailed me to tell me he was getting hospice care at home.

Someone said this in an earlier thread...

The older I get, the smarter he gets. Every time I say something stupid or narrow, he amazes me with patience and understanding. I'm just afraid that when the day finally comes that I'm not afraid to say anything to the man, it'll already be too late.
