Should be the final.
Changes -
a) Re-did chipping
b) Re-did mouth/eye
Still not happy with "Grey Nurse" lettering, if anyone has a good profile?
-
Your text looks identical to an artwork profile I have in a book. Looks good to me!
-
Thanks Krusty, I'm just not happy with it, or with the sharksmouth 'eye', everything else looks OK.
The mouth worked out well despite the stretching on the lower nose.
Just can't find a good profile with a good close in (zoomed) view.
-
My book shows it the same length front-to-back, but shorter (this gives the effect of squinting a bit), and shows it with a black pupil and outline, white eyeball.
Then again, I don't know if this artwork is 100% or not.
My book's got the eye with a bit more upper arch before it reaches the point at the back, and it starts out round then arches upward and tapers back to a point. I can probably scan it for you tomorrow if you'd like? Probably inconsequential, but I offer because you said you were unhappy with it.
-
Scan would be perfect, thanks.
-
Hang on, I'm getting there :)
Interesting about this bird is that it has two eyes :) But you can see the outline well on the newer eye further forward.
-
A bit closer
-
Thats because it's a different bird -
Probably ZP*X Ser No. A58-600
It originally had the smaller sharks mouth and retained the original (lower) eye when the new eye and mouth was applied.
Guessing you probably know this already.
OK will do the new eye based on the upper one in the pic, will be later tonight.
Expext an update Monday night sometime.

And as long as we're playing through. It's a restored Spit VIII in Australia but I think they've gotten it right.

All new, all singing, all dancing, Mk II eyeball.
Now she looks aggressive :)
Just waiting on a good profile with the "Grey Nurse" writing.
Comments.

I think it looks fantastic, the shark teeth Spitfires are always fun to look at, gives it some personality & is different from the norm.
P.S: I know guppy's picture is of a restored one & all, but do you think it would look nicer if it was slightly glossed or something?

The page I was going to scan has it just like this!
-
OK guys fingers crossed it's finished, unless you can see anything wrong.
Thanks for all the help :)
-
I know this is picky, but the shark's eyes look eliptical. It's probably deformity from the texture mapping. The photo shows the eyes as round.
-
check the real pic of the grey nurse its got 4 eyes :D
btw still looks fantastic great work as always kev very good realism on the effects and weathering and colors etc
-
"Grey Nurse" was 457 sqns name.
It was carried by at least 5 different Spit VIII's with sharkmouths.
ZP*Y ended up with 4 eyes when the new sharkmouth and eyes (3 different versions) were applied and the old eyes left on.
RG*V (my one) only had 2 eyes. Flown by Robert "Bobby" Gibbs, hence the RG code.
Other ones I know of
ZP*Q
ZP*W
ZP*X
Hope this clears things up.

Kev367th,
FYI
A Spitfire Mk VIII painted in the green and grey camouflage colours worn by the RAAF aircraft and the markings of Wing Commander R.H. (Bobby) Gibbes performed a fly-past today (17th April) over the funeral service for Bobby's Gibbes.

I think if you use Guppy's first picture ... combined with this one, you can see how they really scripted "Grey Nurse".
