This is actually a good thing. By demonstrating their determination to develop a missile capable of reaching the continental US, it will accelerate our research and development on a missle defense shield. After the break up of the Soviet Union it became politically harder to earmark the funds necessary to put it on a fast track.

Lets see here, in the 1980's we had the soviet union that was "the enemy" turns out they weren't the enemy.
Now we have North Korea, and Iran, Iran wants nuclear power (maybe bombs) North Korea has a missile capeable of reaching the US. AND a nuclear bomb. Now what in the name of all thats holy can be good about the possible senerios?

Hey but at least Iraq is no longer a threat LOLHROTFFPAOMS:rofl :cry

Our second goal is to prevent regimes that sponsor terror from threatening America or our friends and allies with weapons of mass destruction. Some of these regimes have been pretty quiet since September the 11th. But we know their true nature. North Korea is a regime arming with missiles and weapons of mass destruction, while starving its citizens.
Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror, while an unelected few repress the Iranian people's hope for freedom.
Iraq continues to flaunt its hostility toward America and to support terror. The Iraqi regime has plotted to develop anthrax, and nerve gas, and nuclear weapons for over a decade. This is a regime that has already used poison gas to murder thousands of its own citizens -- leaving the bodies of mothers huddled over their dead children. This is a regime that agreed to international inspections -- then kicked out the inspectors. This is a regime that has something to hide from the civilized world.
States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to blackmail the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic.
In the future, it's probably not a good idea to telegraph the punch.
Mmmmkay?

Compliments of ol (this desk is just perfect for an intern to kneel under) Billyboy and his wonderful foreign policy with NK

Nope, MacArthur wanted to nuke the Chinese not the NK's. We had the NK's beaten until the Chinese stepped in and the request to escalate by MacArthur was denied.

Gotta look at history in Context. Mac was on the Yalu. North Korea was occupied.. effectively; no more North Korea. The Chinese, however hadn't said 'uncle' and mac had intel that the Chinese were massing on the other side of the Yalu.
THATS when he asked for nukes.
Truman shoulda let him do it.

Old lil Jongy is bluffing. He doesn't have any n00ks. And I'm being completely serious too. It's like a ****ing school yard boasting match. And every time we've called him on it.
NK Mid 90's: I HAVE A NUKE!
Everyone else: Bull****, prove it!
NK: I don't want to!
NK Late 90's: I HAVE A NUKE!
Everyone else: Bull****, prove it!
NK: I don't want to!
NK early 00's: I HAVE A NUKE!
Everyone else: Bull****, prove it!
NK: I don't want to!
The only difference is this:
NK mid 00's: I HAVE A NUKE!
Everyone else: Really?
NK: Yes, watch me stroke my rocket!
The dude is a con artist. He has no nuclear weapons, nor is he even close to getting one. All he is doing is parading around the ICBM's. Other then that and "CLAIMING" he has a nuke, he has done jack ****. I call bull****.

Good thing I read the whole thread... I was about to contradict my good friend eagler :) Yea, we have lots to thank slick willie for.
Instead, I recommend using google earth to look at the coords specified on this web page:
http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/dprk/facility/nodong.htm
For obvious reasons I am unable to comment on any of the discussion on this website, but the coords and pics appear to be legit, albeit dated. Google earth is a great tool for "browsing" an area of current events interest though, and I use google earth to check out everything of interest in the news today, because you never know...

hahaha
i just had a really odd vision of eagle flying a bombing run and telling his wingman
"ok let me check google earth to verify target".......WTF!!!???? aint nothin there!!!
RTB RTB!!!
whew good thing i checked before we bombed a tree!!!

About a 1/2 click north of those coordinates I get a low-res image that I can't interpet.. could be farmers shacks. Does not look all that much like a missile base to me, but I'm no trained expert.
After checking again and carefully re-reading your post eagl... I'm gettin a funny feeling.

Simple...the proliferation of nukes has increased the chance of an attack on the US, all the Diplomacy won't change a thing, but what will serve as a deterrent is a viable defense system that many in this country have been whining is not necessary. This demonstrates that it is.
-
This also demonstrates that billions of dollars is required to develop an effective ballistic missle system. The NK's SAY they have one.. but frankly, it would be a lot cheaper and far more effective to smuggle into the country the warhead... and detonate it.
So yah.. we do do need an efficient and effective ABM system.. AND we need even MORE a secure port and border system.
Meanwhile, the countdown for tragedy in a few undisclosed blue cities continues.
-
Interesting points here:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/missile/strategy/
Mainly, that Bush Senior really had little interest in Star Wars, either. So, for those that think Clinton solely set back the cause of effective ABM, ignoring what is happening in Alaska with testing. And other comments that in Newt's 1994 landslide win, the time was ripe for the GOP to repeal provisions of the ABM treaty and move ahead but lost the political balls to do it.
As for whether or not we'd consider hitting the NK missile: We'd almost certainly have to do it in Boost phase. And what if we missed? Talk about embarassing. Plus the backlash that would occur.
It will be interesting to see if the US can stop the NK from doing this test. It serves the administration to convince people this is a bigger threat than container ships or dock security. It puts money, and lots of it, in the hands of the right people within the defense industry to continue work on a technology that may never work.
-
I thought I heard a report this morning that they actually hit the warhead this time. But, you know that libral media. They'll do anything to make Klintin look good.

Missiles are so old school.

for crying out loud! the Japanese do not control Godzilla, nor did they even create him(actually, Godzilla is A-sexual). Godzilla is actually a mutated iguana, created by the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atol. Godzilla is a symbol for the United States (yes, crazy Japanese monster movies have a deeper meening), so if anything, Godzilla is American.:furious

If we destroy it on launch, it'll be war. Wouldn't they be breaking a treaty by the launch test? If they do test it, it'll be serious business whether we shoot it down or not. Just about have to shoot it down, though it would be an act of war on both parties. I don't think they'll do it...launch that is.

hahaha, oh they will launch. the question is: will we shoot it down? will we risk a war that will have a questionable outcome? i dont think we have will. i certainly hope not, because North Korea has a very large, dicaplined army and the largest submarine fleet in the world by a noticable margin.
-
I think this media hyping of a missile test launch is more dangerous than the test itself. A test is over in minutes, but the hype creates an atmosphere and perceptions that lingers on.
Just to be clear:
1. North Korea is breaking no treaty with a test lanch.
2. There are thousands of missiles from a lot of countries that can reach the US.
3. Missile tests happen all the time.
4. Whether North Korea has a workable fission device, or even a few, does anyone actually think that North Korea would actually lob a few of them at the US just for fun?
All this hype is nonsense - nonsense created in the media and promoted to the media to keep Americans in a state of constant fear.
Sure, North Korea is bad place for North Koreans, but don't you think it's natural for any country to get a little defensive when the president of the US calls it part of an "Axis of Evil" and attacks one country on the list, and threatens to attack the other?

They have 97 very old subs. 71 of them are mini-subs for minelaying and spec-ops. That diciplined army is not well fed nor does it have any good weapons (by western or South Korean standards). They do however have alot of it and if the soldiers are as diciplined as you say then maybe they could do some damage based on their numbers alone. The biggest problem is that they have an obsolete but huge ammount of artillery that could do serious damage to Seoul.
